Ruggard EDC Overview

Protect cameras, lenses, photographic and optical equipment, mobile electronics, and other valuables from excessive moisture, dirt, and dust with the Ruggard EDC-230L Electronic Dry Cabinet. The cabinet's fast-acting TE Cooling Wafer regulates the interior's relative humidity from 60 to 35% to help prevent fungus and corrosion that can damage delicate gear and other sensitive materials. Humidity adjustments take place over a 1- to 3-hour period.

The large, dimmable LCD displays ambient temperature (in Fahrenheit or Celsius), relative humidity, and other settings, and the glass doors are gasket sealed. Interior LED lights make viewing and finding gear easier, and both the base and the three adjustable steel shelves are padded to help guard against scratches.

The Electronic Dry Cabinet features nearly silent operation, without a fan or compressor to make noise. It is also dripless, eliminating the need for a messy water tray that requires draining. To prevent unwanted movement, the bottom of the cabinet has four feet, two of which are leveling feet for installing on uneven surfaces. The cabinet is powered by an included multi-voltage power supply.

Hygrometer Not Reliable - The humidity percentage is wrong!

By SOHEIL

I have three of these cabinets and was happy with checking them and seeing the humidity was always low. Recently I realized one of the cabinets' hygrometer is showing 25% and the cabinet is actually doing nothing because I set it to 30% and until the humidity doesn't reach to 30% the cabinet doesn't start to work. It was strange because at the same time the other cabinet was showing 28% and the third one was 31%. They were showing different humidity levels however they were all in the same place. I have another hygrometer which I calibrated it and decided to test the hygrometers inside the cabinets. The result is very disappointing. One of the 30L cabinets is 15% off, the second one is 10% off and the 18L cabinet is 5% off. And they were all showing it lower than what it is actually! (see the pictures) I'm really disappointed by this; I've been using the cabinets for three years and had set them to 30% but what they were actually getting was 45% , 40% and 35% during this time. Beware if you buy one, you need to calibrate a hygrometer and test the cabinet's hygrometer and set the cabinet setting based on the result of your test. As you see in the pictures I lowered the setting of my three cabinets to 20% , 25% and 28% so they can keep the actual humidity around 32%-35%.

The Ruggard 120L is just the right size for my collection of four Sony bodies and too many lenses. It would have been nice to have more than one light strip. Other than that, no complaints!

Bigger than expected

I bought this on sale for the price of a smaller one. It will even fit my daily gear bag inside and still have room for more

Fills Up Fast

This is both well made and carefully packed for shipping. The gauge of the metal both for the case and the single supplied shelf is quite heavy. Aside from inserting the shelf and the two foam liners, there's no assembly required. I figured this size was more than I needed but it filled up quickly with my stock on hand to the point that if I purchase more, and I will, I'll need another cabinet. I recommend carefully considering the dimensions too. I have no very long lenses but used to and some of them would not have fit. I think this type of cabinet is analogous to lenses - you can't have too many and in cabinets - you can't have too large. I've had this now a few weeks. So far it's been just what I had hoped: silent running and despite a few days of high humidity, it maintains its promised 40 or lower.

Good Quality - Lots of Space

This is a great dry cabinet for the price! Good construction, simple set-up, super quiet, and holds a lot of gear. B&H delivery was quick even over the holidays, just as they promised! When reviewing the various sizes these cabinets come in, I thought that 80L might be too small. I was wrong! I'm currently storing two full frame Nikon bodies with attached L brackets plus six lenses and I still have room for lots more gear.

Looked at many of the competitors products. This size was the right fit for the amount of equipment I wanted to protect. The B&H price was the most competitive in this size range. Ordering was quick and simple. The cabinet was in stock and shipped same day as I ordered. Came with FREE expedited shipping so came in 2 days. The cabinet was very we packaged and easy to setup. I've had it for a few weeks now and it works great.

Can the glass be replaced with plexiglass to make it more secure?
Asked by: Rohan
Technically yes you could, but you would need to be sure that when you replace it with plexiglass, to be sure you use some sort of sealant to make sure that it bonds properly so it doesn't compromise the performance of the system.

The Ruggard EDC-230L appears to have LED lighting inside the cabinet. Question: Can the internal LED lighting be turned off? Also, can your stored DSLR cameras include their batteries or should the batteries be separately stored in the cabinet?
Asked by: Steven
Unfortunately, the interior lighting on the EDC-230L cannot be turned off. As for storing the batteries, they should be stored outside the camera.

What is new with the 230L over the 235L?

What is new with the 230L over the 235L?
Asked by: Nicholas
I contacted Ruggard concerning your inquiry. They state that the main differences would be the new EDC-230L Dry Cabinet has moveable shelves while the shelves inside the EDC-235L are non-moveable. Other than the above, there are slight differences in the overall dimensions of the unit. The interior dimensions of the older EDC-235L was 31.8 x 13.4 x 31.1" the exterior dimensions were 31.8 x 14.6 x 34", and the unit weighed 76 lbs. Meanwhile, the interior dimensions of the new EDC-230L are 31.1 x 23.62 x 18.9", the exterior dimensions are 33.78 x 23.62 x 18.9", and the unit is lighter as it now weighs 60.6 lbs.

Is there a better solution? General Comment - ...

Is there a better solution? General Comment - perhaps a better solution... I believe that consistent humidity and temperature levels are important, so here’s my suggestion: use a good dehumidifier(s) in your home (Eg, I use a newer model GE that is energy star rated), which does a great job of keeping the ambient humidity around 38%. This has lots of benefits, including reducing the strain of an HVAC system and keeping the system and duct work relatively moisture free. Then buy a good Gun Safe (AMSEC is a good brand, but there are many) with a dial lock (avoid electronic locks which can fail...). A good safe will have a power outlet inside which you can connect a dehumidifying rod to and keep a humidity gauge inside. A fire rated safe is also recommended; minimum of 60 minutes. Store all your most important valuables, including video gear, wills, passwords book, etc inside and sleep well at night. Gun safes are affordable and come in lots of sizes. You’ll want to pay a reputable firm to deliver and install the safe. I’ve also read that when taking video gear outside, if there’s a big difference in temperature/humidity, that placing the gear in a sealed bag to allow the gear to come to a matching temperature sans condensation is recommended. I’d love to read anyone’s thoughts or experiences along these lines...always looking for best practices. Cheers. Chad K.

While the solutions you list above may also work, unfortunately, we do not offer any of the other solutions, and the Ruggard Electronic Dry Cabinet (50L) would be an option we carry that would be compatible and would maintain the temperature/humidity control to the equipment inside the unit. It is true that moving from indoors to outdoors when there is a large difference in temperature/humidity can cause condensation to form on your equipment, and keeping the item in a sealed plastic bag while the inside/outside temperatures equalize would reduce the condensation occurrence on your equipment.
