Zhiyun-Tech Crane 3 LAB V2 Overview

  • 1Description

The Zhiyun-Tech CRANE 3 LAB takes gimbal design in a different direction with the addition of a handle on top. With an included mini tripod attached on the bottom and this fixed, ergonomic handle on top, the CRANE 3 LAB can be used two-handed for optimal stability. Moreover, the handle enables you to seamlessly switch to underslung mode, whether with one or two hands, and achieve creative shots such as 360° roll shots as you move closer toward a subject. In addition to this innovative design, the CRANE 3 LAB also packs other advanced features, such as wireless video transmission, and provides the ability to stabilize up to 10 lb loads.

The CRANE 3 LAB supports two optional servos at the same time for focus and zoom control directly from the handwheel on the side. At the same time, all the other controls you need are provided at your fingertips at the top of the handle along with an OLED status screen. Additionally, the included ZY PLAY iOS/Android app (free download) provides many of the same control functions as well as special features such as panorama, focus time-lapse, motion time-lapse, long exposure time-lapse, camera settings, and more.

Wireless transmission is achieved via a Wi-Fi connection to an iOS/Android phone or tablet. The CRANE 3 LAB wirelessly transmits your video recording from your camera to your mobile device in real time in 1080p resolution. This feature is compatible with select cameras; please see the Zhiyun-Tech website for a full camera compatibility list.

Zhiyun's LAB series was released along with an ecosystem of optional, dedicated TransMount accessories. One of these is the TransMount Phone Holder, which allows you to mount your phone on the side of the gimbal for monitoring your shot via the ZY PLAY app. Other accessories include a camera belt, specialized monopods that work together with the belt, and the TransMount Quick Setup Adapter, which lets you attach the included mini tripod by quick release functionality. This same adapter can also be used to attach monopods to the bottom of the gimbal for more stable jib-style shots. If you get two of these adapters, you can easily swap a monopod and a mini tripod on the spot as your needs require.

Another major feature of the gimbal is an axis latch lock system consisting of a separate latch lock on each axis. This feature allows you to lock the individual axes to remember your balance positions when powering the gimbal off. This way you won't have to rebalance each time.

Note: The CRANE 3 LAB doesn't support many 3rd-party 18650 batteries because it requires the slightly shorter kind made by Zhiyun-Tech, so only Zhiyun-Tech 18650 batteries are recommended.

Innovative Gimbal Design
An ergonomic handle on top, used with a mini tripod attached on the bottom, allows two-handed operation plus easy switching to underslung mode.
Dual Servo Support
Two optional servo motors can be mounted on the CRANE 3 LAB at the same time for focus and zoom control directly from the handwheel on the side of the gimbal. Zhiyun offers two dedicated motors, the TransMount Max and TransMount Lite servos. The Max version has enough torque to handle zoom and focus control, while the Lite version provides the torque for focus control. If you'll be switching one motor between zoom and focus control, the Max version is the one you need. But if you'll be mounting two motors at the same time, then a combination of one Max and one Lite version is the recommended solution.
Aviation Grade Motors
Featuring aviation grade motors and a different gimbal design, the CRANE 3 LAB achieves 50% noise reduction and 100% increase in motor torque over Zhiyun's previous models.
Crafted Latch Design
The CRANE 3 LAB is designed with a red latch next to each axis for saving the balance positions when powering the gimbal off for storage or battery swaps. When powered back on, the gimbal returns to its balance positions. This way you won't have to rebalance it every time you power it on.
1080p Wireless Image Transmission
Via a Wi-Fi connection to an iOS/Android phone or tablet, the CRANE 3 LAB is capable of wirelessly transmitting your video recording to your mobile device as a 1080p image in real time.
ViaTouch Control System
The CRANE 3 LAB's ViaTouch Control System consists of a variety of controls that come up on the ZY PLAY app and allow for framing shots, controlling certain gimbal movements, and adjusting camera settings.

    Zhiyun-Tech Crane 3 LAB V2 Reviews

CRANE 3 LAB Handheld Stabilizer is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from so far really liking it. -great form factor -when i first picked it up in store, it felt way heavier than the weebill, but after a bit of usage, its not bad at all. only thing im not super fond of is that when i have my a7iii hooked up to the crane 3, my cameras screen goes black, forcing me to have to use my phone and the zy play app.  i saw a friend today use the crane 3 with his a7sii, and he was able to use just his cameras lcd. i dont know if its a settings thing or what, but would love to not always be reliant on my phone and the wireless image transmission which can at times be unreliable. and of course B&H and their great service (product gets 4 stars, extra star for B&H)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Locking mechanism works fine For those of you who are having issues with the locking mechanism, its because its flexible. You have to tell it how tight you want it to be. You just have to lift the handle and rotate it the other way. Then tighten it going the usual direction. Keep doing this until your locking is tight on the camera. You only need to do this once. I hope this explains it. Also if you want to use a Sony camera with HDMI you actually have to disable internal 4K recording or your camera screen will go black when you press record. (It works fine if you record HD though) This is a Sony limitation and not the Gimbal. So far the gimbal has worked beautifully and is super easy to balance. Its a little challenging to rig up an external monitor (not phone) but its feasible

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best gimbal Ive ever owned First of all, ignore the review from the person saying they got a defective model that would not lock down the baseplate. Mine came the exact same way and all that was needed to fix it was to tighten the locking arm one full rotation without the baseplate inserted to get it to the right tension.  Moving on, the gimbal itself is an excellent build quality. It feels very robust and professional in the hand. I use a BMPCC4K and Sony a7S and I have been able to balance both camera with every lens I own. The locking mechanisms on each axis make balancing SO much easier than every other gimbal out there. Ive owned everything from the original DJI Ronin, Ronin-M, Ronin-MX, Tilta G2X and Zhiyun Crane 2, and this is by far the most practical solution of the bunch. Granted, if I were to put something like a Red on this gimbal, it may be a little heavier than one may like for an all day shoot, but it would probably work just fine.  In my opinion, if youre shooting on anything from a small mirrorless or DSLR up to something like a Canon cinema camera or Sony FS5, this gimbal is perfect. Highly recommended!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Stabilizer, slight issue Previously owned crane 2 and switched to crane 3, solely for the purpose to be able to use iPhone as a screen. My Crane 3 gave me issues connecting to iPhone. Sometimes it worked sometimes it did not. Very annoying. After visiting bandh and unboxing a brand new crane 3, the reps and I concluded the hdmi coming in box are damage. If you’re having this issue simply buy an after market hdmi cable, which are usually a bit thicker than the hdmi Zyhiun provides with their product. FYI to Zhyiun, please provide better hdmi cables. Other than that Crane 3 is great and would recommend to any one in the market.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth and powerful gimbal Good power, light weight for its size, very easy to balance and configure, change modes, etc. The only thing that is a bit annoying is that when balanced correctly I dont get full clearance on one axis. Really only effects me wanting to lock the thing closed for transport, and means I have to move that arm to put it away each time. Maybe Ill counter balance it some how, but probably not.Otherwise, its really smooth. I hope for more camera control, but really dont need more then record and stop which works fine now.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Research before purcha Alright. So before you purchase this gimbal, do yourself a favor and research the camera compatibility list for this gimbal. Because this gimbal needs to service a multitude of cameras, it’s not all going to work out at the end of the day. And also, there are different base models of this gimbal at the same price. Some come with extra batteries and some come with the phone holder. It’s hard to tell so you better read up or question before purchase. Currently using the GH5 and the 1DX Mark II. The GH5 balances fine but the main problem is when attached to the HDMI out, the GH5 screen goes blank. Maybe it’s a Panasonic issue and they need to adjust but I haven’t found out a way. The 1DX is a different story - the gimbal currently cannot be properly balanced in the tilt axis. The 1DX is just a different beast of a camera for this gimbal - but I’ve seen that Zhiyun has a 1DX Mark II bade plate (extra). I want to say that the camera would balance after getting that base plate, but who knows. As for the ZY Play app - it’s not as good as DJI. DJI is more refined, better everything. The tracking mode on the ZY Play App is really lacking. They need to take a look at DJI and figure that out. Battery life is good. Used it for 2 days then had to switch. Just read everything and watch the reviews. Right now, it’s a 3 star product. For this price you should get extra batteries with the phone holder and with the necessary base plates.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lack support, meh performance It could be so much more than it is if the software were there. It could compete with edelkrone head products. Huge deadzone in joystick. Adjusted with app, still unacceptable. Makes pans and tilts simultaneously difficult. The vortex is cool. I will say the gimbal works as designed with zoom and focus servos and all with my a7r3 and a6500 when it works. Get used to restarting it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from More Money, More Problems Spent Over $1,000 for this gimbal after taxes. Waited roughly 4 months, only to finally try it out and never getting past the Quick Release phase.. It Doesnt tighten properly, therefore you cannot balance the gimbal, rendering this $1,000 dollar product USELESS. Quite frankly, Im Afraid To Invest in another one. Lemon or not..      1 STAR

Does the Crane 3 work well with EVA1?
    Asked by: Eric
We do not believe the EVA1 will work well on the Crane 3. The Crane 3 is geared more towards DSLR and MIrrorless Cameras. A cinema camera like the EVA1 may not balance well or have the full range of motion when being used.

Is the Crane 3 Lab compatible with the Nikon D500? If you buy the Master Package, are the 3-Axis supported?
    Asked by: Nicolas
While the D500 is not on Zhiyun-Tech's list for compatibility with electronic control from the gimbal to the camera, you will be able to balance and shoot with the D500 on the Crane 3.

    Does Sony A7 Mark 3 + 16-35mm f/2.8 is compatible on crane 3 lab?
    Asked by: Sohail
Yes, the Crane 3 LAB works great with my a7iii. The Crane 3's 10lb load capacity is more than enough to handle a 1.43lb a7iii (camera body only) and any lens you throw on it.

Will this unit hold a Canon C100 Mk II? If so, can the camera's top handle stay attached so we have access to the XLR inputs for our wireless mic? (We do a lot of walking stand-ups with talent.)
    Asked by: Jim
I posted the original question on this thread. Just wanted to follow up with more info I learned, in case anyone else is thinking about this unit for a C100 MkII. I went ahead and bought the Crane 3 to see how "limited" the motion would be. Answer: It's VERY limited. You cannot go into undersling mode with a C100 MkII. The top viewfinder hits the gimbal frame when you're at about waist height, so you cannot go any lower. Special effects like "vortex shots" are also impossible. You also need to modify the quick-release plate by removing the lens cradle and mounting the plate on the bottom of the camera backwards, otherwise you will never get the camera to balance. And perhaps the biggest issue is that neither the camera control cable nor the HDMI monitor cable is long enough to reach the camera ports. Plus the HDMI plug is a mini version, which does not match the C100 MkII full-size HDMI socket. I still did manage to try the camera out on the Crane 3 for a few shots, and even with these limitations, it did provide stable shots and was fun to work with. But for our regular shooting applications, we would not be able to work around these limitations. So back it goes, unfortunately. Still searching for the perfect C100 MkII gimbal. (And no, the Helix Jr with the bigger baseplate is NOT a viable option.)

Is the video transmission feature included in the basic version of Crane 3 or only in the creator package?
    Asked by: Pawel
This feature is on all versions of the crane 3. The other packages are just extra accessories like focus and zoom motors. Wireless video, as well as pan and tilt work with the basic package.
