Flash is pretty good. The manual is terrible.

For the price it seems great, but getting through the modes is difficult with the documentation that is included.

Back-up flash

I bought this as a back-up to my Canon 430. I've taken a single test shot and for the small amount of money this Sunpak cost, it appears to be fine for my needs. I don't know if there is any relation between today's Sunpak and the Sunpak of old (70's, 80's and early 90's) but I still own and use several of the old units still when shooting film. Solid gear...

Cheap and effective

I was surprised at how much better this was with my D7000 than my old Sunpak flash, or my weak-but-pricey SB-series Nikon flash.

Great value

It's about the same as a Nikon flash except no CLS but nothing of value was lost. It DOES trigger from seeing another flash (either from the first or second flash, to work with TTL pre-flash) in manual mode. I've had lots of manual flashes that work this way but this one also gets you all the goodies like TTL/iTTL, high speed sync, a battery port and PC port. It has a red color AF assist light (the manual is vague on this), and it works great on my D600 but does not light on my Z7ii. There really are no flashes with a green color AF assist for Z cameras yet (not even from Nikon).

It will work, and it will make your rig top-heavy, but it’s worth it if you want a proper speedlight for an affordable price. There are some very compact flashes out there, but with small size come small power and small features.

Can this be used as a slave to my Nikon SB800 without any other accessories?
Asked by: John
Yes. The optical slave mode works, which means you set up the Sunpak with manual function and it fires when it sees any other flash. I also just recently discovered that the Sunpak does work with the Nikon CLS, in which it will also accept control and TTL communication from other Nikon speedlights and certain DSLR bodies.
