Canon RP Overview

  • 1Description

Impressively small despite having a large full-frame sensor, the Canon EOS RP offers flexible imaging capabilities along with a portable form factor. Featuring a high-resolution 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor along with a DIGIC 8 image processor, both stills and UHD 4K video can be recorded using a broad sensitivity range, from ISO 100-40000, to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Continuous shooting is also supported at up to 5 fps for photographing moving subjects. The sensor also facilitates an advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF system, with 4779 selectable on-sensor phase-detection points for quickly and accurately acquiring focus during stills and video operation.

Complementing the sensor and processor, the RP also sports a 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder along with a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD monitor for easier viewing from high and low angles. Additionally, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow for wireless remote camera control along with direct image sharing to linked mobile devices.

Canon RF Lens Mount
The EOS RP features the RF lens mount, which support Canon's line of RF-mount lenses. This mount is characterized by its wide 54mm diameter and short 20mm flange-back distance, which promotes the ability to design lenses that are both faster and smaller than their SLR equivalents. The mount also incorporates a 12-pin electronic contact system for more sophisticated autofocus and image stabilization capabilities. This mount design also lends full compatibility to existing EF and EF-S-mount lenses via an optional EF-EOS R Mount Adapter.
26.2MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 8 Image Processor
A large 26.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor is featured and serves as an ideal balance between high-resolution output, low-light performance, and high-speed capabilities. When paired with the DIGIC 8 image processor, the EOS RP has a wide native sensitivity range from ISO 100-40000 for working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, continuous shooting up to 5 fps is possible for working with moving subjects.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face or Eye Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery. Additionally, the focus system is sensitive down to EV -5 for working in truly low-light conditions with accurate AF capabilities.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Designed for multimedia image-maker, the EOS RP supports UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution recording at up to 23.98 fps at 120 Mb/s, along with Full HD 1080p and HD 720p at 60 fps for slow motion playback. When recording in-camera, 4K video has 4:2:0 sampling and 8-bit color depth, and 4:2:2 8-bit output is possible when using an external recorder.

Audio can be recorded using the on-board stereo microphone or an optional external mic can also be used via the 3.5mm mic jack.

Also, 5-axis Dual Sensing IS can be used when recording video to electronically reduce the appearance of camera shake for sharper, smoother recording.
Body Design
  • Integrated 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder affords a bright and clear means for eye-level viewing.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a vari-angle design for easier use when working from high, low, and front-facing angles. It is also a touchscreen for intuitive control over shooting, playback, and menu navigation controls.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity enable wireless sharing, control, and image transfer with a compatible smart device via the Canon Camera Connect app, which also supports geotagging your files using your mobile device's location data.
  • In-camera charging over USB is supported for easier on-the-go charging.

    Canon RP Reviews

EOS RP Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 63.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice but not perfect The RP is my first mirrorless DSLR. I wanted to see if I wanted to go that direction and see when they come out with a pro model I would be inclined to get it. I like that it is full frame and small. It is lightweight. It is not totally quiet. The adapter works nicely with all my other lenses. I have 3 APS sensor cameras and the quality of the images with the RP is much better. There is some learning curves in setting it up. There is a feature you need to disable and that’s the constant focus. It would focus anywhere you pointed the camera without touching the shutter button or any other button on the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow Amazing Pictures!! I wanted to get into the FF game without spending an arm and a leg while staying future proof (this camera body has access to Canons RF line which are most cutting edge in the industry)... I have tested the other competitors offerings including the Sony A7III, Fuji X-t3, and Nikon Z6 and Canons OTB image quality, ergonomics, menu system, software integration, len selection with the adapter cannot be beaten at this price range and quality what your getting (you can get some cheap lenses EF and still get amazing results if your on a budget)...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Camera The RP is a beast when it comes to pictures! I compared it to my 5D3, files are far more superior on the RP. Focus is crazy fast on my L lenses and extremely accurate. Perfect backup camera for my wedding photography. Also, Files are much more cleaner than my 6D2, I will be selling that camera. B&H processed my order and shipped it the same day! Excellent customer service. Highly recommend if you can’t afford the R.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slow to Upgrade I was a generalist photog back in the day shooting 4x5, medium, and 35. I switched from Nikon to Canon with the 5D, which I upgraded to the 6D when it came out. The RP is the first body upgrade since, I did it for the value, compact size, better autofocus, better IQ, and last but not least to put my CLE Rokkor Ms (28, 40, 90) on a full frame digital body that did not cost an arm and a leg. Picked up an adapter for a song, and I am a happy camper. Ill continue to use my EF lenses for anything resembling a job, but for personal work Im more apt to use the Rokkors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Lot of Camera for the Money Im an enthusiast level photographer and am heavily invested in Canon photography equipment, mostly purchased from B&H.  I had been looking for a kit that I could comfortably carry with me everywhere that offered very good image quality without lugging around a heavy body and lens.  I found it in the Canon EOS RP with the RF 24-105mm f/4 IS USM lens.   This is much more than a camera for beginners, or those upgrading to full frame.  Its lightweight and compact, yet very comfortable in the hand.  The perfect size for everyday use, travel, street, etc.  The build is typical Canon quality and very user friendly.  Image quality is excellent, just what you would expect from a camera with a full frame sensor. For the money you get a quality  mirrorless Canon body with a full frame sensor, the lens adapter so you can use all of your EF and EF-S lenses, and the grip extender.  Take it from an experienced Canon user, this is a real bargain! My only gripe is the battery life so I would highly recommend you purchase at least one additional battery if purchasing the RP. The RP is exactly what Canon designed it to be, a user friendly value priced full frame mirrorless camera offering decent build quality and excellent image quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first full frame - what a camera! I just love the EOS RP. Bought it as an upgrade from my 77D because i wanted to go full frame. The focus is super fast, EVF is amazing, the image quality is outstanding, and the 24-105 RF lens is very very sharp. The images i get from this camera at iso 12800 are just unbelivable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera! All the complaints about this camera seem to center around video, and stat junkies... Im primarily a photographer, and this definitely is a great addition to my kit. I am looking forward to the pro model, but people forget about the most important feature of the camera, the PHOTOGRAPHER... Its a great kit for the price point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Camera Looks like I’m the first review for someone who’s actually used this camera. The prior reviews are all from people complaining about nonsense who haven’t even used it. I just got this camera today and it’s absolutely fantastic. The first thing that blew me away is how small it is. I’m using this for travel, kids, and hobby. Having a small camera has always been unattainable when I have DSLR image expectations. This is my first mirrorless and I’m super impressed. The pre-order promo included the EF adapter and the extension grip. The EF adapter is essential as I’m bringing over some EF L lenses that I’ve collected over the years. Today I have been shooting with my 24-70 and the quality is fantastic. Auto focus is fast as heck and I don’t have a single negative to say about the adapter. I’m waiting for my first RF lens to ship and I’m excited to see how well that works out. I put the extension grip on and found that it really wasn’t necessary, even with the 24-70 L which is pretty big. I ended up taking it off because I like holding the smaller camera better. I’m 6’2” so it’s not like I have tiny hands. Perhaps I will put it on when I’m using my 70-200 and I’ve got some real heavy length on the camera. But as far as it goes now, I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary to make the camera bigger for what I’m using it for. The viewfinder display is great. This is my first electronic view finder and it’s still fun looking through it compared with a DSLR optical viewfinder. The primary display is sharp, bright, and familiar to my older Canon cameras. I was really torn on purchasing this camera or the R. I’m glad I waited and held out for this one. With the money saved I’m half way towards one of the new RF L lenses. I’m also a big fan of the small size (if you can’t already tell).

Does it come with the ef-r adapter and grip for free? Both of them included in the 1300usd price?
    Asked by: Mateo
The description on this page clearly states (near the top) what is included for free. For a time, the grip extension and the EF-R adapter were included for free. But as another answer indicated, it looks like the offer was only good through March 31, 2019. Currently, only the adapter is included for free (not the grip). So if you didn't hop on the offer in time, it is too late now.
