Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S Overview

By B&H Photo's

Bright and versatile, the NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S from Nikon is a workhorse standard zoom, covering wide-angle to portrait-length fields of view. Characterized by its bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, this lens is suitable for working in a variety of lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus. The optical design incorporates a pair of extra-low dispersion elements along with four aspherical elements, which help to control chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and sharpness. Additionally, ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats, as well as a Super Integrated Coating, have been applied to suppress flare, ghosting, and surface reflections for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Complementing the optical design, a multi-focus system, which employs two stepping motors, helps to realize impressively fast, accurate, and quiet focus performance, along with full-time manual focus override, to suit both stills and video needs. The lens also has a unique physical design, which incorporates a top OLED information panel that can be used to quickly confirm aperture and focus settings, and an assignable L.Fn button permits making exposure and settings adjustments via the lens. Additionally, a programmable control ring can be set for intuitive adjustment over a variety of camera and exposure settings.

Standard zoom covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and is designed for FX-format Z-mount mirrorless cameras.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.
Four aspherical elements are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to realize sharp imagery with accurate rendering.
Two extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured on multiple elements to help ensure consistently accurate colors.
Multi-focus system incorporates two separate AF drive units, which are synchronized, to deliver especially fast and accurate focusing throughout the zoom range. This system uses stepping motors, which offer impressively smooth and quiet autofocus performance that is well-suited to both stills and video applications. Full-time manual focus override is also possible and an internal focusing design is used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust manual focus, but can also be used to control aperture or exposure compensation.
Integrated OLED lens information panel allows you to quickly confirm aperture setting, focus distance, and depth of field figures right on the lens in both bright and dark situations.
Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm promotes a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.
Dust- and moisture-resistant lens barrel benefits the lens' use in inclement conditions.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S Reviews

My Walk-About Lens

This is my favorite Walk-About lens and I had the AF-S version for year. This one feels smaller and lighter and seems clearer, smoother operation, and faster. Can't go wrong with this one.

Nice Lens - So Versatile

I've been using this lens with the Z9 for a few weeks now and am surprised at how much I like it. It is a versatile lens I find myself using not just for landscape shots, but in other situations, too. I recently used it in a large conservatory where tripods are not permitted to photograph orchids and flowers. I was amazed at how sharp and crisp the images were. The zoom range works well and it is a fast f2.8. I'm trying it for pet photography and I'm sure it will do well. It's a nice addition to my lens arsenal.

The lens I was waiting for

Sharp, and light as far as 24-70 2.8 is concerned. I am not sure why people complain about the weight. It is lighter then the 24-70 2.8 F mount lens adapted with FTZ. So far great purchase!

Great optics, smooth fast focus on Z9. Everything you would expect from a world class lens.

Worth every penny

I have been using this lens on my Z9 body for almost three months now. The optic is ridiculously good. It is super-sharp, and it captures colors faithfully. The f/2.8 opening is large enough to allow me shooting using existing light in most situation even at ISO 64. I have yet to shoot using any strobes. As a final thought, this lens is worth more than the asking price. Buy it and be prepared to be amazed!

Outstanding lens....crystal clear

I have recently purchased a Z9 from B&H. I love NIKON in that the old lenses fit the newer products...usually with an adaptor.. So having purchased the FTX II converter ring, I shot several hundred pictures using various lenses that I have had for years and used with my D850, D500 and D7101. First, let me say that the pictures were fantastic even with the non-mirrorless lenses, (a tribute to the Z9 in large part I'm sure) ...However, after renting a mirrorless lens...I knew that I needed to add the Z 24-70 f/2.8 S to my camera bag. Secondly, I have not disappointed in any way. Crystal clear, versatile and lighter than I expected, I can see why mirrorless equipment has caught on in such a big way. I wish I could go completely mirrorless, but there is no way I could afford such a move at this time....but if I could I would! Finally, the fact that NIKON/B&H had this lens on sale for $300.00 off, made this purchase one of the best values for a lens of this quality, I have ever made. The Z 24-70 and B&H receive my highest recommendation

I used it several times for event photos since receiving it and it is perfect. Photos are sharp, colors are accurate, build quality is excellent, balances nicely in my hands. Equal or better than my 24-70 AF-S lens that it replaces, though I still use the older lens for backup.

Has anyone experiences a very slight play in the inner barrel when especially when extended? It's subtle but audible when I gently shake the lens.
Asked by: Sam
I have just looked at this lens on my Z7. Yes, when extended there is the slightest play in the inner barrel, which can be felt and (barely, but clearly) heard. This does not seem to affect anything and this is one of my best, sharpest Nikon lenses. I suspect it is normal.

Is it normal for the telescopic part of the lens to wobble? Giving it a light shake makes a rattle-like noise. I can feel the telescopic section moving back and forth slightly.
Asked by: Dylan
I just received my Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S yesterday and noticed a slight wiggle and can hear the movement if I apply slight pressure on the end of the telescoping barrel when it's extended anywhere from 50mm to 70mm. I called Nikon support today and they confirmed there should be no wiggle with this lens. They suggested calling B&H for an exchange or sending the lens into Nikon for warranty repair. Since I just received the lens I'll be calling B&H when they reopen on Sunday (it's after hours on Friday now).

Is there a collar that makes the new Z lenses backward compatible with existing F mount cameras (Nikon 850)?
Asked by: Lucy
No. You physically cannot adapt Z lenses to F mount cameras, the sensor to flange distance will not allow for this.
