  • Nikon Z 7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 24-70mm Lens

Nikon has taken the next step in their imaging journey with the Z 7 Mirrorless Camera, dubbed "The Perfectionist," and the revolutionary Z System. This high-resolution FX-format camera introduces the Z Mount, a large diameter design with a short 16mm flange distance that allows Nikon to create compact, yet powerful cameras and develop more advanced optics. The Z 7 is among the first in the series, and brings with it a 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor and EXPEED 6 Image Processing Engine, delivering outstanding image quality and speed with a native sensitivity range of ISO 64-25600.

On the sensor you will find an advanced phase-detect autofocus system using 493 points covering 90% of the image area and the sensor features 5-axis Vibration Reduction technology for stabilized photos and video regardless of the lens used. This advanced hybrid AF system will also benefit video. The Z 7 features UHD 4K recording at up to 30p and can use the N-Log gamma profile along with the camera's 10-bit HDMI output to create cinema-quality video. The camera's high-resolution sensor also permits the use of an 8K Time-Lapse mode.

As with many mirrorless systems, the Z Series boasts a much more compact form factor than its DSLR counterparts. The Z 7 is no exception with its slimmed down design and lighter build, though it maintains the weather sealing and ergonomics for which Nikon is known. The camera features multiple displays and screens for ease of use, including a 0.80x 3.6m-dot EVF with NIKKOR optics and a Fluorine coating, ensuring clear viewing. The rear of the camera is equipped with a 3.2" 2.1m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD while the top offers a dot-matrix OLED for quickly checking settings. For storage, the Z 7 has a single XQD card slot that is compatible with CFexpress for faster speeds in the future. Additionally, the body is equipped with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

    Nikon Z System
Introducing the Z mount, Nikon's full-frame mirrorless system promises to deliver class-leading image quality and optics in a compact form factor. The Z mount itself makes much of this possible with a 17% larger inner diameter than the F mount, enabling the use of more advanced optics and lens designs, including ultra-fast f/0.95 options. For minimizing camera and lens size, the Z mount features a 65% shorter flange distance, measuring just 16mm, which allows for dramatically slimmed down body designs. The larger mount also supports faster and larger-volume communications between the body and lens to improve overall performance throughout the system.
45.7MP FX-Format BSI CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6 Processor
A 45.7MP BSI CMOS sensor is used for high-resolution shooting, impressive low-light quality, and fast readout speeds to benefit continuous shooting, movies, and time-lapse recording. The back-illuminated design of the sensor affords noticeably cleaner high-sensitivity output for reduced noise when working at high ISO values, up to a native ISO 25600, as well as vivid and smooth quality at sensitivities as low as ISO 64. The sensor's design also omits the conventional optical low-pass filter in order to achieve the greatest sharpness and resolution from the sensor. Benefitting the sensor is the apt EXPEED 6 image processor, which affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including the ability to shoot continuously at 9 fps in raw.
    4K UHD Video Recording and 8K Time-Lapse
Utilizing the sensor and processor attributes for more than just still imagery, the Z 7 is also a more-than-capable multimedia camera. Video recording is possible at UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) using either the full-frame area or a DX crop area in 30p, 25p, or 24p frame rates. Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to 120p for slow motion playback, and video files can be saved to the in-camera memory cards or as an uncompressed file to an optional external recorder via HDMI out.

Advanced video functionalities have been added with the Z 7. This includes the N-Log gamma for capturing flat-looking footage that maximizes dynamic range. Other additions are the ability to output high-quality 10-bit data over HDMI and an Electronic VR function for smooth handheld shooting. Focus Peaking can be used to benefit manual focus control and a Zebra Stripes option is also available to help detect over-exposed areas within the frame. Audio recording can be handled using the built-in stereo microphone or an optional external mic can be added via the 3.5mm stereo jack for greater control over quality, and live monitoring is possible via the headphone jack.

The Z 7 also blends both still and video capabilities with the ability to produce 8K time-lapses using the Interval Timer Mode or in-camera 4K time-lapse movies, with the ability to record up to 9999 exposures for either method. This system also makes use of a silent interval timer, which produces no shutter noise, does not contribute to wear on the shutter mechanism, and is energy efficient to maximize battery life.
    493-Point Phase-Detect AF System
Located on the sensor is an array of 493 phase-detect autofocus points covering 90% of the image area both vertically and horizontally. This provides fast and accurate focusing for both stills and video and with a wide coverage area, subject tracking will work out to near the edges of the frame. Hybrid AF is available for video, which will automatically switch between phase- and contrast-detect systems to provide smooth focus during shooting. Additionally, the latest NIKKOR Z lenses are optimized for silent operation.
    Body Design
    • Built-in to the body is a 5-axis sensor-shift Vibration Reduction mechanism for up to 5 stops of stabilization regardless of the lens used. This system also works with adapted lenses when using the optional FTZ Adapter where 3-axis stabilization is used.
    • A large 3.2" 2.1m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a tilting design to benefit working from both high and low angles, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.
    • A 3.6m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a high 0.80x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image. The finder also has a Fluorine coating for easier cleaning.
    • The top panel of the Z 7 is configured with a dot-matrix OLED. This low-energy display provides quick access to important camera settings.
    • Configured with one XQD memory card slot, the camera will be able to quickly save images. The slot is compatible with CFexpress, enabling support for future media.
    • A robust magnesium-alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.
    • The ergonomic grip and overall form factor is shaped to benefit handling for extended periods of time and is further accentuated by an anti-slip material and a joystick for seamless settings and focus point selection.
    • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.
    • Included EN-EL15b rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 330 shots per charge, and in-camera charging is supported. This camera is also compatible with EN-EL15 and EN-EL15a batteries, however do not support in-camera charging.
    NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens
Included with the camera body is the standard zoom NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens, which covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and features a constant f/4 maximum aperture. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element as well as a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element; both of which help to greatly reduce a variety of aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate color rendering. A Nano Crystal Coating is also used to control flare and ghosting for increased contrast in strong lighting conditions. Suiting both photo and video applications, a stepping AF motor is also featured for smooth, near-silent autofocus performance.

  • Chiaro 72mm 99-UVBTS Brass UV Filter

The 72mm 99-UVBTS Brass UV Filter is Chiaro’s top-performing protective UV filter offering 99% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers who demand the highest-quality glass and other essential features for uncompromised image fidelity and premium construction.

To achieve superior 99% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished Schott glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. The durable brass filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it’s thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling is crafted to help ensure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

    99% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished Schott glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro can offer a 99% transmission rate, which is the highest possible transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
    Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allows you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
    Polished Schott Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The Schott glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures superior optical clarity.
    Multi-Coating
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
    UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
    Brass Construction
The durable brass filter ring offers a substantial, premium feel. The unique properties of brass minimize the chance of jamming or binding when you're screwing the filter onto your lens or stacking filters.
    Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
    Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling that helps offer better options to grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
    Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
    Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Nikon Z7 Reviews

Z 7 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 24-70mm Lens Deluxe Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 80.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Camera! First impressions of the Nikon Z7: This camera is amazing for my purposes; I do macro, landscapes, cityscapes, and portraits. The image quality of the Z7 is mind-bending! If you use good techniques while shooting, the results will rock your world. All my lenses work with the adapter, even the DX ones. Also, the shutter is super quiet even when its not in silent mode. Furthermore, LCD screen...wow! Very nice user experience, I didnt know an LCD screen could be so pleasant to use. Theres still a lot to learn, but Im plugging away getting used to the functions and differences. Its amazing to be able to take a FF digital camera and just plunk it into my bikes pannier!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Nikon yet! This is my choice for best Nikon and I've owned most of them. Lighter, smaller but easily held. Fast focus and excellent VR allowing very sharp handheld photography while my compatriots on a photo trip above the arctic circle in late day light were fumbling with tripods. The FTZ adapter worked perfectly on all functions on my legacy lenses going back to an AI fisheye. The adapter's tripod mounting hole moved the weight center enough for great balance for night photography with 14-24 f/2.8 lens. The silent mode is perfectly silent for quick street photography. I had started buying Sony mirrorless but the Z7 brought me back to Nikon and my cabinet of Nikkor glass. Nikon is back in the game!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Z7 is FAR better than youve heard! I absolutely love my Z7 (and the 24-70 S lens).  The build quality, how if feels in my hand, the OUTSTANDING EVF, great FULLY enabled touch screen (works in all menus), excellent AF in video and outstanding image quality make this a really wonderful camera.  Ive been all over the place since trying mirrorless starting back in 2010 and yes, Ive even owned the  Sony a7R III (10 months), but nothing quite felt right for me.  With the Z7, I feel completely content and happy again with my camera.  I havent felt this way since I bought the D700 in 2008.   Be careful about the negative reviews you read on the internet and the click-bait review videos. Unless you need a really fast action sports camera, the Z7 will impress you.  It certainly has impressed me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed! I have been a Nikon user since my Nikon F2A in the 70s meaning I have a number of Nikkor lenses.  Ive had a number of Nikon DSLRs and currently have the D810.  I didnt go for the D850 because I was waiting for the mirrorless camera. (I also shoot with the Fujifilm system and love mirrorless).  The Z7 fits my hands and shooting style perfectly - landscapes, travel and some studio.  Im not a sports shooter nor a wedding shooter.  I am greatly impressed by the image quality of the camera and am extremely happy with the FTZ adapter enabling me to use all my Nikkor lenses.  To say I am a happy camper would be an understatement. My attached photo was taken with the Z7, my 14-24 f2.8 and the FTZ adapter and using the cameras Focus Shift Shooting feature to insure sharpness throughout the image. Small, light and powerful!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent camera but why cripple it with a small buffer? Nikon stupidity is mind boggling. When Sony comes out almost 2 years ago with the Alpha a7R III 42.5MP camera which shoots 14 bit + jpg at 9 frames/sec has 76 shot buffer, Nikon comes out with this Z7 which shoots 14 bit at 8 frames/sec and has 19 shot buffer.  No wonder this camera does not sell, no pros want a camera with a ridiculously small buffer.  I happened to be OK with it since I use it only for landscapes and the image quality is excellent. The new Z series S lenses are the best Nikon lenses I ever owned, But come on Nikon if you want the pro market you better come out with a Z7 II which has at least 3x the buffer size.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Silent mode - live performance The camera overall seems great. However, the main reason I bought it was to shoot live performance on silent mode. I photograph live dance performance and often with very quiet music and often I’m embedded in the audience. So a silent solution would be great for me. The lights at the 2 different shows I shot both out out pursing light beams. On silent mode, the images had light stripes. Non-silent mode was fine. But silent mode was not fine. All of my images had stripes and this is why I’m returning the camera. My Nikon rep said all mirrorless cameras have this problem on silent mode.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Z and travel photography I recently returned from a 3 week trip in Europe where are I used the Z 7 along with the new  24-70mm 2.8 S lens as my only lens. The combination was awesome and easily captured over 90% of the images. A longer lens would have been useful for the small minority of images but not worth the carrying burden. The camera was phenomenal in low light situations and image stabilization was fantastic. Very pleased with autofocus and no issues with battery life though I did have it in Airplane mode. The weight and smaller profile was a big advantage over my prior Nikon 810. No problems just joy in use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Getting acclimated to the Nikon Z7 I purchased the Z7 because I wanted a mirrorless camera with more megapixels and similar feel to my Nikon 750.  So far the camera performs as expected, lighter weight with legacy lens, sharp images, and easy enough to navigate the buttons and command wheels. However, my fingers continue to press the Fn1 and Fn2 buttons and I do not have a large hand or long fingers. I am still learning and navigating the capabilities of the Z7 but so far I am enjoying the purchase.  The XQD card, somewhat pricey, and one memory card slot are features I will need to get used to and would prefer a second slot for an SD card.

does this Z7 have the 2.0 firmware update?

does this Z7 have the 2.0 firmware update?
Asked by: Ilija
Manufacturers do not indicate to B&H which firmware version is in their product and we unfortunately do not have the ability to ascertain the answer with any item in our warehouse. Since our stock moves rather quickly, it is more than likely it has the latest firmware already in it. Since there is also the possibility of new firmware being introduced at anytime, it might change even during the time it takes to ship from us to you. We recommend that once you have received your product, check with the manufacturers website to see if you are running the latest version. If not, you can at that time do an update.

Has anyone used in a studio with strobes? I just read a review on another site and he crucified it's job done in the studio.

If your studio modeling lights are not very bright (like mine) the camera may hunt for focus. And you need to go into the Custom (pencil) menu at d8 and select "off" for "Apply settings to live view." This will allow you to see with the EVF even if your flash settings are, say, 200 @f11 or whatever. But note that the EVF will NOT be WYSIWYG! You'll have to check your exposure manually in playback mode, just like you would do with an DSLR. The color in the EVF will not be accurate, either, so you'll have to check that in playback mode, too. These are not deal-breaker issues to me.

How is the Z7 with low light? I need another good camera to photograph bar bands/concerts and high school sports at night with no flash and poor lighting, currently shooting with a D850 and it is pretty good.
Asked by: Jeffrey
The Z7 performance in low light is very good. Similiar to the D850. But for best low light performance choose the Z6.

question

Would it work with Zeiss lens with the adapter?
Asked by: Linda
It will work with any third party lens using the proper adapters. Not all of the auto functions will work with all lenses, though. I'm currently using my Z7 with a Voigtlander Skopal 21mm f4, which has a Leica M mount, by using a Nikon Z to Leica M adaptor (B&H has the adaptor). I typically shoot in aperture priority mode and set the aperture manually on the Skopar. It doesn't autofocus either, of course, but the DOF is huge, so zone focus seems to work just fine. I use this combination for street photography because the Nikon Z lenses are SO bulky.
