Sennheiser e 604 Microphone Dynamic Instrument Microphone

The Sennheiser e 604 Microphone is a rugged, cardioid instrument microphone that is specially designed to handle the high sound pressure levels of drums, percussion, woodwind, and brass instruments without distortion. It captures frequencies between 40 Hz and 18 kHz, doing so at sound pressure levels in excess of 160 dB without nasty distortion.

Based on the design of the well-regarded MD 421 microphone, the e 604 features a dynamic transducer, which does not require phantom power, and its cardioid polar pattern is effective in minimizing pickup and feedback at the off-axis sections of the capsule. An integral stand mount screws directly onto mic stands, but the included clip of the microphone attaches the microphone to the rim of a drum or the bell of saxophones. A slight bump between 4 and 5 kHz allows instruments to cut through the mix.

question

Hi, is an e-604 mic a good choice for a bass drum? Any alternative mic models a surdo (brazilian bass drum)? Thanks,
Asked by: Juan O.
Hi, I would not recommend it for a bass drum. I use the e-604 on toms and snare drum with GREAT results. However, I would highly recommend using an AKG D112 or the like on a bass drum. You will get MUCH better results. Good luck!

question

is a 604 mic good enough for a alto sax ?
Asked by: Anonymous
The e604 can be used for miking instruments like a sax in addition to drums and would be able to handle the SPL. For an alternative that can also be mounted a condenser will offer better capture tonally. The e908 or Shure Beta-98 are common alternatives.

question

Is there a sensitivity rating for this mic?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it does. Sensitivity in free field, no load (1kHz)1,8 mV/Pa. Also keep in mind there is Low sensitivity to impact and handling noise. This is due to the very high sound pressure handling capability.
