Prized for its ability to isolate focus, the FE 135mm f/1.8 GM from Sony is a medium telephoto prime characterized by a bright and sophisticated design. Perfect for portraiture, this lens also excels in close-range sports shooting and as a unique focal length for landscape subjects. Its G Master design prioritizes both sharpness and bokeh quality and the lens also sports fast autofocus capabilities and a durable build quality.
Fast Design and Advanced Optics
  • As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve notably high resolution and sharpness through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations.
  • Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers a wealth of control over focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
  • One XA element is incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations.
  • Two extra-low dispersion elements, including one Super ED element, are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
  • A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Fast and Accurate AF
  • XD Linear Motor system and internal focus mechanism provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance and also contributes to more natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Minimum focusing distance of just 2.3' renders a 0.25x maximum magnification for working with close-up subjects.
  • Two customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
Weather-Sealed Construction and Intuitive Handling
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
  • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dust, moisture, and fingerprints and is easy to clean.

Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM Reviews

Beautiful bokeh

Great lens with tack sharpness. Very fast focus and creates amazing results. Disappointed in the process of trying to keep the firmware updated. It continues to shut the update software down and asks me to restart the process.

This one was a win.

This lens is so good you'll never want to remove it, so hopefully you'll have a second body to use your other lenses...I'm not even joking!

I have been wanting to purchase this lens for over a year....I was finally able to do so ( it is pricey!! )...and I have to tell you....I absolutely LOVE it and it is worth every penny for its focusing ability, soft backgrounds and overall superior performance. This lens has taken over as my " go to " lens.

I purchased this lens to capture dogs in action, and it does an excellent job paired with the A7RV. The Aperture ring is a nice touch. It is my go-to outdoor lens now for dogs and children as it is much faster to focus and lighter than my 24-70.

If this is the focal length that works for you, the lens is absolutely sharp wide open and renders beautifully, so you can get the max light hitting the sensor.

I already own most of the Sony GM lenses. Today I just received this 135mm f/1.8. When I hold the lens and shake it, there is easily noticeable movement inside. No other GM lens does this. My question: Anyone already owning this lens, is this the same with your copy? Focusing seems to work perfectly and is silent (unlike the 85mm f/1.4) but this interior movement seems strange.
Asked by: Yeshe
Yes mine has a very noticeable but controlled movement when I shake the lens. Some component seems to be moving back and forth. There's no real sound though, and the movement is also quite muffled, a soft thump if you will. I just chalked it up to the focus motor movement. This lens has a very complex focus mechanism which helps it focus at lightning speed. Pretty sure your copy is totally fine.

What is a light transmission in T-stops for this lens?
Asked by: Roman
I don't think Sony publishes this information. You might try searching 3rd party reviews online (Cameralabs, etc.). From my experience, I doubt that it differs much from the published f1.8. The only Sony lens I know of that differs significantly is the FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS. This 135mm is my favorite Sony lens.
