General Features

Professional Solutions

Designed specifically with SMB customers in mind the WD Red family has expanded with the addition of WD Red Pro, which is available for the 8 to 16 bay medium to large-scale NAS environments. With a 6TB storage capacity, this WD Red Pro drive carries a 5-year limited warranty and was engineered to handle the increased workloads from your business.

NASware 3.0 Technology

With advanced firmware technology built into this WD Red Pro drive, NASware 3.0 enables seamless integration, robust data protection and optimal performance for systems operating in the demanding NAS environment.

Vibration Protection

In combination with 3D Active Balance Plus, WD Red Pro also features hardware vibration compensation technology which monitors the drive to correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time, further increasing drive reliability.

Enhanced Accuracy for NAS

For overall enhanced accuracy for NAS, WD Red Pro is also equipped with dual actuator technology which improves positional accuracy over the data tracks and head positioning. StableTrac technology then secures the motor shaft at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize the drive platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations. Both technologies are important for larger 8 to 16 bay NAS environments.

8 to 16 Bay Shock Protection

WD Red Pro is equipped with a multi-axis shock sensor that automatically detects subtle shock events and dynamic fly height technology which adjusts each read-write function to compensate and protect the data. This combination of technology further protects the drives in large 8 to 16 bay NAS environments and increases drive reliability.

Error Recovery Prevention

Built specifically for RAID and NAS environments, WD Red Pro drives come equipped with error recovery controls as part of NASware 3.0, which prevents the drive from fallout in RAID applications.

Longer Warranty Coverage

Complimenting WD Red at a 3-year limited warranty, WD Red Pro offers longer warranty coverage with a 5-year limited warranty for an even greater peace of mind.

Premium Support

Every WD Red Pro hard drive comes with support services including a premium dedicated 24/7 support line (available in English, other regional support hours vary).

WD Pro Internal HDD Reviews

16TB a little noisy for home NAS

By Julian
Rated 3 out of 5
Date: 2022-05-15

Purchased 2x 16TB WD161KFGX (36 dBA seek avg, 20 dBA idle) Replaced 2x 10TB WD101EFAX (38 dBA seek avg, 34 dBA idle) Used in my Synology NAS for backups. During idle the new drives are quieter than my previous ones. Read is probably just as quiet. But writes are pretty noisy. By the specs these should be a hair quieter - and maybe technically they are - but something about the quality of the seek / write clicks is much more distracting than the quality of the noise from the 10 TB Reds (CMR, later rebranded Red Plus). It's noisy enough that I'm considering putting my Synology on a power schedule so it's not bothering me during work hours. This NAS is in a small home office with mostly Apple equipment. To understand the noise levels I expect, I replaced the Synology system fan with a Noctua and can still hear it, but it's a more acceptable level. I wanted to move up to 16TB and I'm willing to pay for 5-year-level warranty from Pro, but now I'm wondering if I should've waited for a 16TB Red Plus if WD pays more attention to noise quality on this.

Western Digital wins again

I found it strange that this model with the 14TB capacity has a 512MB cache while the other capacities have the smaller 256MB cache considering the price per byte is on par with the others. Anyway, it made sense to me to get the larger cache for that reason. I think this drive has a capacity to last the rest of my life. I'm old. I temporarily housed it in an external drive enclosure and plugged it in to a USB 3 port and it's working beautifully. Eventually I'll put it in the PC and move a smaller capacity drive from the PC to the enclosure. And even later on, I'll actually buy an NAS and drop it in there, perhaps with a second identical drive if I decided to RAID.

Run hotter with no performance gain in NAS

By Bruce
Rated 3 out of 5
Date: 2021-12-28

The hard drive read write times are not the gating factor in performance with a NAS file server and so the higher RPM drives add only more cost and run much hotter. An extra 15 to 20 degrees F may not make a difference but why take the chance? It also requires a higher fan speed for cooling the drives which can be a problem in an office or home office situation. In a NAS enclosure there are dead spaces and certain drives will not get as much cooling from the fan and this can shorten their life. If there was a discernable gain with higher RPM drives it would be different but in a NAS as tests have shown this is not likely to be the case.

Replaced an OEM WD Black 4TB that was DOA.

I Decided to go with a retail pkg this time. I had high hopes for the OEM WD Black, 4TB. It arrived well packed in the usual protective foil, but dead for whatever reason. The Red Pro Retail installed and partitioned without a hitch. The drive is noisier than I'm used to, but has been working fine to date. I only gave it 3 stars because of the length of time it has been in use ~2 wks. So it is OK as of now. It will get five stars if it is still working fine after a year.

10TB NAS drives on sale! And, they are good drives

How can I complain? These 10 TB Pro drives were on sale for the same price as 8TB Pro drives on sale! And, yes, they are good drives. I have been populating all of my NAS's with WD Reds, Red Pluses, and Red Pros for years.

I have a similar question, the model number for the 8TB version of the WD Red Pro NAS should be WD8003FFBX, but this web page lists it as WDBRJY0060HNC-WRSN. I'm trying to find out if they're the same, but I can't get confirmation from B&H. I just tried sending a message to WD support to see if they have an answer.
