Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Overview

Designed within the rigorous tolerances of a cine lens, the Leica L-mount Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens is a wide normal-length lens characterized by a bright design and sophisticated optical layout. The fast f/1.4 maximum aperture helps to achieve shallow depth of field and selective focus effects, and also suits working in difficult lighting conditions. The optical design incorporates a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements, which help to improve sharpness and clarity by controlling both spherical and chromatic aberrations. A Super Multi-Layer Coating is also featured, and helps to minimize flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design features a brass bayonet mount, which offers rigidity and mounting precision along with a seal to guard against dust and moisture. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Short-normal prime is designed for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras, however is also suitable for APS-C models where it provides a 60mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Three F Low Dispersion (FLD) and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element is used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contributes to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Protective coating has been applied to the front element and is both water and oil-repellent to aid in cleaning.

Sigma 40mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Reviews

It's a beast but I love it!

The Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art is definitely one of the best lenses I own. And just to clarify, I own mostly high end pro first party lenses. This lens is a true unicorn among lenses. It is certainly one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used. It also has outstanding contrast and color rendition with excellent micro contrast and no CA at all. And it is this good all the way down to f1.4 with some vignetting up to f2.8. But the vignetting is soft and gradual with an artistic effect that focuses you into the image. Most lenses this sharp and mist Sigma Art lenses fall into this category are very clinical with no character to speak of. But one of my favorite characteristics of the Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art is amount of character it has. This character also is very controllable by the photographer by how you use it. Overall the combination of sharpness, rendering, lack of distortion and aberrations character and feel make it a perfect complement to my RF 85mm f1.2L. Now for the elephant in the darkroom, the massive size and weight. It is as big as my 135mm and similar in weight as my 85mm f1.2L and 100-500mm lenses. But it is so good optically and ergonomic in hand that nothing else matters. So for others is comes down to a great piece of optical equipment that produces outstanding images of too big and heavy for some. I'm almost 70 and on the small side but love the results too much not to use it.

Big and heavy-- yes. But image quality is amazing. I use this for clients and personal work. It does well across three systems-- Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm GFX. On the GFX 100s-- I've not found the dark corners that others have. The images with that combo are similar to what I've gotten with large format. I've moved away from film for many reasons (vegan for one) and am so happy to be able to create that 3d effect again. Very glad to have this. This helps create images that you can't get with a phone. Worth the weight, indeed.

This lens epitomizes what one would consider an artists lens that defies the normal technical parameters you would normally use to explain its attributes. In this case I will specify the camera ( Lumix S1r ) and the subject ( multiple selections of colorful and challenging flowers, translucent whites to rich saturated blooms all mixed ). I will not include an image because the reproduction would never do it justice here however, the following is how I perceive this lenses magic in transforming imagery. This lens is like a Parisian enchantment vs a German romance of technology. Translucency is beautifully detailed velvet with transitions of color and contrast elegantly rich yet smooth. The lens shot under morning light with proper subject with transfigure your imagination into an honest magical reality. This review may be panned by many for its seeming frivolity, yet it is the best I have to offer explaining the consistent results I have attained. A real artists lens in the right hands, most powerfully used wide open. Just my thoughts.....( note I own 17 different lenses designed for the L system ) P.S. technical features are excellent including AF.

Its heavy, but its great

I have to say, I really love this lens. Its great for cosplay photography, and the 1.4 aperture is amazing for lower light settings or for a nice boka effect. The only down side to this lens is that it is big and heavy. It weighs more than my camera. But it is definitely worth the price, and the images quality is amazing on my A7iii

Nikon F mount I bought this lens exclusively for photographing Milky Way panoramas. Dropping down from the Sigma Art 50mm, I had very high expectations of this lens. It doesn't disappoint. There is very little corner fall-off. In fact, I'm currently shooting it wide open @ f/1.4. Coma is almost not even detectable, and astigmatism is not evident at all. This is the sharpest 35mm based lens I've ever owned. I have only been out twice with the 40 so far. The first trip got clouded out. But last night I pulled off a fabulous 220 deg 4-row MW pano. I am thrilled to own this lens.

How long is this lens? Why are two different versions of this lens shown in the photos?
Asked by: Carl
I have both lenses and BH has the images mixed up for this lens. They have a bunch of pictures of the DSLR version of the lens which is 131mm long. The mirrorless version for Sony E and Leica L are 158mm long. They are both the same diameter. Sigma even included the wrong length in the product description card with the Leica L version - perhaps they have not gotten around to printing the different dimensions for the mirrorless versions. This should be fixed because a little over an inch difference in length for the same lens is substantial.

Autofocus using the Viewfinder is ACCURATE & CONSISTENT? Because many Sigma Art lenses are not good in this situation, even after tweaking with USB-Dock... Canon lenses are almost perfect and always reliable in terms of AF, but my experience with Sigma gave only about 50% real in-focus pictures WHEN USING the VIEWFINDER (on many cameras, no microadjustment related issue). If I use LiveView the, of course, the AF is always perfect. Thanks!

I understand that the Sigma 40mm is a very sharp lens. I have a Nikon D700, and I was wondering if the lens is overkill. Will I really notice a difference with 12 MP camera with an AA filter?
Asked by: Rudy
You will always see better image quality using a superior lens, but how much better will depend on what your other options are. If the other option is a mediocre or bad lens, you will see a big difference; if the other option is a good lens, you won't see as much of a difference.
