Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Leica L
Key Features
  • L-Mount Lens/Full-Frame Format
  • Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/16
  • Three SLD Elements
  • One Aspherical Element
Fast and versatile, the Leica L-mount 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM from Sigma is a normal-length prime designed to achieve high optical performance through the incorporation of both three Special Low Dispersion glass elements and one molded glass aspherical element. These elements, coupled with an advanced optical design, work to minimize sagittal coma flare and chromatic aberrations in order to provide high image sharpness and clarity. The lens' large diameter and floating system also help to correct for vignetting to ensure maintained peripheral brightness. A Super Multi Coating has been applied to lens elements, too, to reduce flare and ghosting for higher contrast and color fidelity. Additionally, making it an ideal lens for portraiture, the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture pairs with a rounded nine-blade diaphragm to benefit selective focus and shallow depth of field imaging with smooth bokeh.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Overview

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Prime normal-length lens is designed for full-frame Leica L-mount mirrorless cameras, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 75mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
One aspherical element reduces distortion and spherical aberrations for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Reviews

Sharp, fast and well-priced.

Okay, it's hardly light-weight BUT what a lens! Sharp from corner to corner. Well built. Sturdy as all get out. Fast. And, a fraction of the price of Lumix's 50mm f/1.4 option. Highly recommended!

Sigma 50 mm f/1.4 for video

I am primarily a TV producer... I purchased the sigma 50mm f/1.4 about 4 weeks ago and have it on a LUMIX S1H... I have filmed 4 TV commercials with it and am very impressed with the auto focus and depth of field. I would highly recommend this lens to anyone interested in this lens for video. The camera and lens are so sensitive that I recommend using an ND filter even when filming indoors if there is any ambient daylight.

Loud in AF-C

Optical, technical build etc perfect lens!!!,BUT I bought it to my S1H, I am very dissapointed of noisy AF in video, it is audible in every my video , when I use internal microphone or external on S1H or on Cage-it doesnt matter...my wife heard it from 1.5m in quiet room and asked me what is it!..?...! So you have only 2 choices1.make video with MF or2. external mic but not on your camera, nice far away from your AF-C with this lens.So it really doesnt see like ideal wedding/event lens:-(

Love It!

This lens is amazing. It is super sharp and creates beautiful photos and video. The colors are awesome and I don't see any fringing or chromatic aberration. It works great on the Lumix S1. Single autofocus is fast in both photos and video. Continuous autofocus is ok in video, but not as good as the Panasonic 24-105 f/4. The autofocus motors are a bit louder that Panasonic lenses, but very on par with any other sigma lenses. I picked it up for $850 and it seems to be just about as good as the Panasonic 50mm at about 1/3 the price. Its a great lens.

Robust. Sharp. Affordable.

I have been shooting video and some photo on this lens for a little over a month now. The build quality was the first thing that stood out. This lens is a tank. I'm not one to complain about size/weight because usually that reflects the quality of materials. This lens can definitely handle everyday wear and tear. The image quality is astonishing, especially when considering Lumix sells a 50mm at over DOUBLE the price of this one. I won't even make mention of the AF because we know that Sigma had nothing to do with the Lumix AF system. I would absolutely recommend this lens to anyone looking for a versatile lens that produces professional grade image.

Beautiful build, amazing glass

Wide open, the sigma 50 art is incredibly sharp, with little distortion, and beautifully controlled fringing. Like all Art lenses, the build is pro level, and with a weather and dust seal, the sensor is safe from damaging rain and granular particles. Color rendering is very precise, and is on point with my more expensive Leica lenses and GFX lenses. Focus could be a little faster, but for portraits, it's plenty fast. There is a bit of focus breathing, so for those using it for video, you may find that to be an issue when in AF mode. Otherwise, this lens is a steal, and worth every penny.

Love it!
