Leica Q2 Overview

  • 1Description
  • 247.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Processor
  • 3Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
  • 4Body Design

Redeveloped while retaining impressive imaging and optical attributes, the Leica Q2 is an advanced compact camera characterized by its updated sensor design and intuitive operation. Revolving around a revised full-frame 47.3MP CMOS sensor and Maestro II image processor, high-resolution stills shooting is possible along with both DCI and UHD 4K video recording. The image processor also contributes to a broad ISO 50-50000 sensitivity range along with quick 10-fps full-resolution continuous shooting. The added resolution also affords a series of unique Crop Modes, which simulate working with longer focal length lenses, including 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm fields of view.

Speaking of the lens, the Q2 features the same impressive wide-angle prime Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. fixed lens, which has been matched to the sensor design for exceptional resolution and clarity. The lens's design incorporates three aspherical elements and its bright f/1.7 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions. Additionally, a macro setting permits working with subjects as close as 6.7" away.

Complementing the imaging and optical assets, the Q2 remains an especially compact and intuitive camera, well-suited for street and travel photography. Its sleek magnesium alloy body is weather sealed for working in trying environments and it has adopted the same battery featured in the flagship SL mirrorless camera for longer battery life. A high-resolution 3.68MP OLED electronic viewfinder is featured for fluid and clear eye-level monitoring and a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD also affords straightforward playback and settings control. Built-in Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi permit wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device via the Leica FOTOS app.

47.3MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor and Maestro II Processor

Featuring a redeveloped imaging system, the Q2 incorporates a high-resolution 47.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor along with an updated Maestro II image processor, which lends more flexible image creation along with smooth color and tonal rendering, a broad 13-stop dynamic range, low noise, and a wide sensitivity range from ISO 50-50000. Processing capabilities also afford fast shooting performance, up to 10 fps at full-resolution with a mechanical shutter, along with an especially quick 49-area autofocus system. Stills can be recorded as 14-bit DNG files and JPEGs. The added resolution also enables unique digital zoom capabilities to simulate working with different focal length lenses: 30MP images can be created using a 35mm field of view, 15MP images with a 50mm field of view, and 7MP with a 75mm field of view.

In addition to stills, the Q2 features improved video recording with the ability to shoot both DCI 4K24p and UHD 4K30p video, along with high-speed Full HD recording at up to 120p.

Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens

Key to the popularity of the Q-series is the incorporation of a fixed Summilux 28mm f/1.7 wide-angle prime lens. Blending Leica's optical know-how with a design perfectly matched to the image sensor, this lens incorporates three aspherical elements to control distortion and spherical aberrations for sharp and accurate rendering. Its fast f/1.7 maximum aperture also excels in low-light conditions and offers improved control over depth of field. Extending its versatility, a dedicated macro focusing position can also be used for working with subjects as close as 6.7" away. Additionally, optical image stabilization helps to compensate for the effects of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting.

Body Design

  • High-resolution 3.68MP (1280 x 960) OLED electronic viewfinder provides a clear and realistic means for eye-level viewing. Its high refresh rate virtually eliminates lag and an updated eye sensor provides faster automatic switching between the EVF and the rear LCD.
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD features a touchscreen design for intuitive navigation and playback, as well as the ability to touch to focus.
  • Lightweight magnesium alloy body is dust and moisture sealed (IP52-rated) for use in harsh environmental conditions.
  • Adoption of the BP-SCL4 battery, as used with the SL (Typ 601) mirrorless camera, affords an improved 370 shots per charge and the battery's physical design incorporates a rubber gasket to further reinforce the overall weather sealing.
  • Enhanced haptics, following suit of the M10 and CL-series cameras, emphasize a simpler interface, including a single-stage On/Off button, a three-button rear control set, a programmable button within the thumb-wheel dial, a push-button diopter adjustment, and a distinctive thumb grip.
  • Mechanical shutter affords flash sync speeds up to 1/500 sec.
  • Lens features a 49mm filter thread diameter for attaching optional filters.
  • Accepts one SD-type memory card and supports the UHS II protocol.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi, when used in conjunction with the Leica FOTOS app for iOS and Android, permits sharing imagery directly to a linked mobile device and also enables remote control over the Q2 and remote shooting via a live view image. Additionally, Bluetooth LE helps to maintain a permanent connection between the mobile device and the camera, enabling remote waking of the camera and automatic connection anytime within range.

Leica Q2 Reviews

Requires thought

By Richard

Wanted to affirm how good and pleasurable this camera is. To repeat what others have said: the images, when good, are REALLY NICE, (my miss rate is higher than with a micro four thirds system). The ergonomics are pleasing, and the thought that went into the menu organization results in a significantly more user friendly system (limited experience here). Unlike some reviewers, I particularly like the JPEG quality, which is somehow gentle, and not over saturated or over sharpened. - What may make this camera unique, is that it can be configured as a point-and-shoot, but; it is satisfying and relatively straight forward to use manual controls, in full or in part. Due to this, I'm having to significantly improve my skills (a good thing). Lastly, I appreciate the understated design. It makes me smile.

Disappointing for a camera this expensive AND from Leica

When I bought it I thought that the camera would be flawless. Instead I have a camera that, when the ambiance, object or surroundings get a darker, the definition of the pictures are all messed up. The quality overall of the whole picture trashes, even if you get the ISO up ( thing that also does not work properly because the definition goes down too )or open the shutter it still has a poor performance. Forget about 47 MP because the camera gets to the level of the Leica D Lux 7 that costs five thousand dollars less and is less heavy and less striking and less expensive. I recommend searching for other alternatives

Simple Elegance

I took the plunge into Leica, with the Q2... it having the budget for an M11. Almost got the Monochrome version, but chickened out. Got the Q2 and set up a monochrome profile. Very happy. Simple elegance, superior quality. Video is perfectly useful and good (and I'm a pro videographer). App works well. This was a purchase aimed at " being intentional", slowing down and making images count. Happy with the lens, happy with the resolution, happy with the ergonomics. This camera inspires me, and will help inform all my other work.

Sturdy, fun camera

It has been raining a lot in Eastern Europe where I am planning to go for a month. I decided to get this camera for travel and street photography. So far, I love it. I mostly shoot in RAW, so I am not concerned that the reviews say that the JPEGs are not strong in colors. It is heavier than I expected, but so sturdy. When I travel I cover up the Leica label. Everyone I know who has this camera loves it. Note: it doesn't do the three crops in RAW, just when using JPEGs.

After thirty years of chasing the latest video-cinema gear, I wanted to return to simple roots. This is it. Exquisite design, build, function, and images. Leica makes prototypical cameras the way Martin guitar makes acoustic guitars.

Leica Q2 still can get dust in the sensor

I was excited and love my Leica q2 until I realized all my pictures have a bubble mark, so I send it to Leica customer service to check. OMG - what a painful experience, also they told me the sensor is dirty but never explain by my sensor is dirty if the camera was very new , rarely use plus is a fix lens. Be careful and now I am worry to even take it out from the case .

Effortless

I've owned or shot with almost every film and digital format and brand at one point or another, but deliberately avoided Leica. It wasn't the cost or quality--I'm not a rangefinder photographer. The Q2 is the first camera I've used in a long time that gets out of the way. It took me less than an hour to be completely comfortable with it. I can go from 28mm to a usable 50mm--even 75mm in a pinch--in seconds. No lens change. RAW files are incredible. Yes, it's expensive and in some circles extravagant. And I can make a solid case that IQ is not much better than the Fuji X100V--in low light, sometimes it can be worse. But the Q2 has changed how I see the world and opened up new possibilities. Plus, for me, having one camera with world-class durability, optics, and IQ plus four usable focal lengths makes it well worth its high price.

Exceptional lens, very good camera

I received my Q2 a few weeks ago and I have taken today around 100 pictures. I rarely do videos. I am also an amateur. First comment: exceptional lens that works very well in all kinds of lights. I have not noticed any flaring. It is clearly a wide angle lens. The only quirk is that the short selection between 6 feet and infinity requires some finesse when adjusting the focus ring. Second comment: Although the camera can be entirely automated, I would recommend using it at least partly in manual mode. I found that selecting A all over yields worse results in many situations. However, manual selection is easy and then there is the viewfinder (see next comment). Third comment: the viewfinder is absolutely exceptional with its graphic and digital information available in it. It helps me hone my skills tremendously. It also reacts quickly to any manual change I make. There is a slight luminosity difference between the viewfinder and the reality but it is not a major issue. I do not use the screen to take pictures. Fourth comment: Sensor and image processing. It works very well, it is very fast and it is very advanced. The link with the menu/program is great and very user friendly and flexible. Fifth comment: Leica Fotos. I lack comparison with other camera softwares. Fotos is slick but not great. Picture transfer is cumbersome from the camera to my computer except if I try to get it straight into LightRoom which is not my workflow. It also takes too much time. It creates a competing WiFi network with my home network. However, I might be biased because I am in the tech industry. Sixth comment: Q2 build and form factor is very solid and compact. It is also quite heavy for such a small camera. The camera is discrete and allows me to take pictures without being particularly noticed. I have no issue with battery. I also want to praise the service I received at B&H in NYC. Professional and helpful without being a pain. Thank you.

Do you like this camera for Macro photography? Or would it be better to just add a macro prime Canon to my 5D Mark 4 body ??
Asked by: Patricia
The Q2 system provides users with excellent macro capabilities. That being said, the limitation of the Q2 is its fixed lens. If you want the most versatility, having an interchangeable lens camera will allow you more options for macro photography. The beauty of the Q2 is you have an amazing compact camera for day to day shooting and a macro feature that's always available when you need it built in.

In the Q2 Video Full HD 120fps, does that include autofocus? Does the shutter button have to remain half pressed to maintain autofocus in video mode
Asked by: Troy
You do not have to hold the shutter release halfway down for continuous AF in the video mode. You simply have to have the Focus Mode (found in the main menu) set to AFc (auto focus continuous) and the camera will focus automatically as you move the camera or if the subject is moving. If you shoot in AFs mode, you would have to push the shutter release down halfway for it to lock onto the subject. If the scene changes you would have to push the shutter release down again to re-focus.
