Neumann TLM 103 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (Nickel)

The nickel TLM 103 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone from Neumann is a cardioid, directional microphone that features low self-noise and high sound pressure level transmission. The capsule, derived from that used in the Neumann U 87, has a cardioid pattern, is acoustically well-balanced, and provides great attenuation of signals from the rear.

The TLM 103 is equipped with a large-diaphragm capsule with a cardioid pattern. By focusing on this pattern, the attenuation of unwanted rear sound has been optimized. Off-axis sounds are rendered naturally while isolation is increased. This also leads to a high feedback suppression when the microphone is used in live situations or where loudspeaker playback is a factor.

The TLM 103 is addressed from the front. The K 103 large diaphragm capsule is based on the K 87, and has a flat frequency response up to about 5 kHz, and above that, a wide flat 4 dB presence boost.

The large, wire mesh head-grille protects the capsule from plosive sounds and effectively prevents pop noises. These characteristics are achieved without resorting to corrective resonance effects. The microphone maintains a great impulse response and reproduces details of music and speech without coloration.

With just 7 dB-A and 17.5 dB CCIR, the self-noise level of the TLM 103 is so reduced that even the smallest signals are reproduced almost noise-free. It is capable of handling sound pressure levels up to 138 dB without distortion.

With TLM technology, the usual output transformer is replaced by an electronic circuit. As with traditional transformers, it ensures good common mode rejection, and prevents RF interference that may influence the balanced audio signal.

The entire internal construction is elastically mounted to attenuate any structure-born noise that could interfere with the TLM 103's operation. The capsule is set on an elastic mount and the frequency range reaches below 20 Hz, allowing even very low bass signals to be reproduced without coloration. Due to this low-frequency extension, the TLM 103 is more sensitive to structure borne interference and wind noise.

The Rycote InVision Studio Kit with USM is a complete suspension and pop filter system which combines the InVision Studio Universal Shockmount and Universal Pop Filter in one convenient package—everything you need to capture professional radio-ready recordings free from pops and noise.

 

The shockmount supports any microphone with a diameter of 18 to 55 mm and weighing up to 1.65 lb. The patented vibration-resistant Lyre mount helps to reduce capsule and cable-borne noise and controlled tests at Rycote's factory show that it provides up to twice the isolation of traditional microphone suspension systems.

 

The pop filter is made with a custom mesh that attenuates frequencies up to 20 dB and is designed to reduce or eliminate pops caused by "b" and "p" plosives in vocal performances. Unlike other pop filters, this one causes no audible high-frequency loss, keeping the integrity and clarity of the original sound produced by your microphone.

 

With its universal screw clamp, the InVision pop filter not only works with the InVision USM but is designed to fit any universal shockmount with diameters between 1/8 and 1/2". Microphone Isolation

Four-Layer Acoustic Treatment

Four layers of acoustic treatment help to isolate your vocal and instrument recordings. A thick layer of composite fiber surrounds your microphone and absorbs unwanted reflections, as well as additional noise coming in from the room. Two more layers of fabric and a perforated mesh layer help deaden and disperse sound waves, leaving your incoming audio clean and dry with little to no coloration.

Adjustable Microphone Position

Getting the right position with your microphone to capture vocals or instruments is a crucial step when recording audio. The RF-C20 allows you to adjust the microphone position horizontally and vertically. Slide the microphone closer to the filter for that dry sound or slide the microphone away from the filter to add more of the room ambience. You can also adjust the microphone height to fit the person or instrument you're recording. You can even alter the angle of the filter and microphone with a simple twist of a knob.

Mounting Options

The Auray Studio Isolation Filter can be mounted three ways. Use the clamps to attach the filter to medium- to heavy-duty boom and microphone stands. The clamps provide quick attachment and minimize setup time. An included 5/8- to 3/8" adapter allows you to seat the filter directly to the top of your mic stand. In addition, you can mount the isolation filter upside down to a mic boom arm for overhead recording.
