RODE PodMic Overview

By B&H Photo's
RODE PodMic Dynamic Podcasting Microphone (Black)
Podcasters looking for the right mic to bring professional-quality sound to their productions on YouTube, FaceBook, Twitch, and elsewhere have a great option with the black PodMic from Rode. This cost-effective, yet stylish, end-address dynamic XLR microphone is specifically tuned for speech and broadcast. Tailor-made for use with the RODECaster Pro podcast production studio and PSA1 broadcast arm, it can also be plugged into a wide range of pro-audio gear to deliver broadcast-quality sound.
This microphone is part of the B&H Virtual Mic Locker, an online tool to help our valued customers determine the sonic differences between popular microphones for podcasting and voice over work. Each microphone was recorded using a Grace Design M103 preamp into a Presonus Quantum 2626 interface.
Podcast in Any Environment
Most podcasts happen in bedrooms, home studios, or offices with less than perfect acoustics and noises coming from the outside. The PodMic features a dynamic capsule with a tight cardioid polar pattern, great for picking up the speaker while reducing unwanted sounds that are further away or off to the sides.
Get Close to Your Mic
With its end-address design, the PodMic invites you to get right up close and create intimate broadcast-style voice recordings with a deep and warm tone. Its compact size lets you and your guests see each other and enjoy an open and comfortable talking experience, while the mic stays out of the camera's way when videocasting.
Built to Last
Solid-brass construction with a hard-wearing matte-black ceramic finish ensures that the PodMic will continue to deliver the same level of performance over the years, while still looking great.
Clean Speech without Distractions
The PodMic's internal pop filter and double-mesh housing work to effectively reduce distracting breath and plosive noises (as in s, p, and b sounds) without the need for an unsightly external pop filter.
Protect Your Sound from Vibrations
The internal shockmount helps to isolate the PodMic from handling noise and vibrations when you are adjusting the mic or if there's a bump or knock on the table. The integrated swing mount that holds the mic further insulates it from low-frequency noises, which could ruin your audio.
Swing into the Right Position
The PodMic has two wing nuts on each side of its built-in mount, allowing you to quickly swing the mic into the right orientation and lock it into place. Mounting the PodMic on the PSA1 broadcast boom arm (available separately) gives you the added flexibility to position the microphone exactly where you want it.
Get Professional Results
Pair the PodMic with the powerful RODECaster Pro podcast production studio to leverage the most out of your microphone. Select the PodMic microphone preset in the RODECaster Pro audio options and matching digital signal processing is automatically applied, giving your voice the depth, presence, and hint of shimmer associated with top professional radio broadcasters.

Auray BAI-2X Two-Section Broadcast Arm with Internal Springs and Integrated XLR Cable

The Auray BAI-2X is a two-section broadcast arm with internal springs and an integrated XLR cable. This versatile and sturdy broadcast arm is great for studio as well as home use. It's ideal for broadcast, voiceover, and podcasts.

The BAI-2X broadcast arm is designed with internal springs that provide a clean and sleek look. The internal balance springs are precision engineered to support and hold in place microphones of up to 5 lb / 2.27kg. The design also minimizes handling noise when re-positioning the arm. The broadcast arm features a standard 5/8"-27 microphone stud mount that is compatible with most shockmounts and microphone clips. The angle of the microphone stud mount can be adjusted and secured with the locking knob, and the angle is maintained when re-positioning the arm. This eliminates the need to readjust it every time the arm is moved. With an extension of up to 40 inches, and the ability to rotate the arm 360°, the BAI-2X allows for precise microphone placement.

The BAI-2X also features a heavy-duty combo mount that consists of a sturdy C-clamp and a heavy-metal desktop mount. The C-clamp is capable of fastening onto desktops up to 2.3" thick. The C-clamp's slim design minimizes the clearance needed to mount it between a desk and wall. The desktop mount detaches from the C-clamp and provides the option of permanent installation to a desktop with the mounting screws (included). A 14" riser is included for adding height to the broadcast arm in order to extend over computer or studio monitors.

Polsen HPC-A30-MK2 Closed-Back Studio Monitor Headphones

The HPC-A30-MK2 Closed-Back Studio Monitor Headphones from Polsen offer a solution for experiencing rich and natural sound when listening to music through a mobile device or monitoring a podcast on your computer. These headphones can also be used for DJ work, thanks to the swiveling earcups that let you monitor audio while keeping one ear free.

The HPC-A30-MK2's over-ear design isolates the sound and prevents leakage for optimum listening conditions in loud environments, such as a club or on the go. The 10' cable also gives you the freedom to move around while working and terminates in a 3.5mm TRS stereo plug, which is compatible with most mobile devices and computers. In addition, a stereo 1/4" adapter is included to plug into a stereo or mixing board.

Mobile
The HPC-A30-MK2 headphones deliver a rich sound for listening to audio on a mobile device. Whether you're listening on a smartphone, an iPod, or a tablet, these headphones deliver detailed sound even in noisy environments.
Over-Ear Design
The over-ear design isolates sound in loud environments and prevents leakage for optimum listening conditions. This design is good for listening to music on a busy street, and for DJs who need to monitor their audio in a noisy club.
DJ Applications
The headphones are suitable for DJ applications and include a tuned bass response for low-end clarity. The pivoting earcups are ideal for one-ear or on-the-shoulder monitoring. A padded headband offers to keep you comfortable during a lengthy session.
Broadcast and Podcast
The headphones allow for monitoring audio on a laptop or in a home studio as well as recording a vlog on a smartphone.
Swiveling and Rotating Earcups
If you're a DJ who likes to keep one ear free, you can swivel one of the earcups for on-the-shoulder monitoring. The earcups also rotate 90° so you can turn one of the earcup outward for one-ear handheld monitoring.
10' Cable
A headphone cable that's too short is almost like sitting on the sidelines—you can't be part of the action. If you need to move around while you work, the 10' cable will allow you to move about freely.

Auray WBF-BDM Foam Windscreen for Broadcast Dynamic Mics (Black)

The black Auray WBF-BDM foam windscreen is tailored to fit most broadcast dynamic microphones with a 2" diameter such as the Rode PodMic and the Shure SM7B. It's a practical and simple solution that minimizes vocal plosive sounds of announcers and singers who work up close to the microphone.

In recording or podcast studios, it will also reduce noise from moving air produced by air conditioning, fans, or ventilation systems, up to 8 dB with only minimal high-frequency loss. The hypoallergenic and washable foam also shields your microphone from dust, debris, and moisture that can damage your microphone's capsule.

Acoustic Foam
The windscreen simplifies recording podcasts or vocals with a broadcast dynamic microphone. When recording at home or in the office, you'll need to reduce the noise from moving air caused by ventilation systems, fans, or air conditioners without muffling the sound. Rather than turning off the AC or fan while you record, simply slip the windscreen over your microphone to minimize noise due to moving air.
Minimizes Vocal Plosives
If you prefer to work close to the microphone for those great low frequencies from the proximity effect, you're bound to incur the drastic P and B sounds that seem like miniature explosions. As an alternative to moving further away from the microphone, the windscreen minimizes those disruptive vocal plosives while allowing you to stay close to the mic.
Protects against Damage
Dirt, dust, and even the moisture from your breath can damage a mic capsule. This simple foam windscreen shields against harmful debris and moisture, and it prolongs the life of your microphone.

There was a 60Hz electrical hum and buzz noise when I connected the PodMic to my RØDECaster Pro. Has anyone else had the same problem? I tried swapping cables and inputs and tried a different mic. Only the PodMic has the humming noise problem. I’m wondering if the PodMic has a shielding problem.

Beware of cheap mic cables that can introduce RF noise. Try using a Mogami Gold Studio cable. If you're already using a good quality mic cable make sure the mic is at least 2 feet away from any potential RF sources like power supplies, mobile phones, etc., and don't run the mic cable closely in parallel with any power cords. If you're still getting RF interference contact Rode support.

Will the boom that is featured in the official Rodecaster tutorials be bundled with the Podmic, or is that separate? If it is separate - what is the brand and model of the boom featured in the videos?
Asked by: Chad
Hello Chad, currently the Rode PSA1 is not included as a bundle from Rode, but is sold separately. The PSA1 is an excellent upgrade and add-on to the new PodMic.

Your specs say: Frequency Range 50 Hz to 13 kHz On the official Rode website it says 20 Hz to 20 kHz which is better range than a Rode Procaster. Who's right?
Asked by: Igor
Hello Igor, I have just received an update that the frequency response is 20 Hz - 20k Hz. Rode will be updating the website and datasheet asap.

I plan on using this mic with my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 - would adding an activator such as the CL-1 Cloudlifter Mic Activator be of any added benefit, or entirely unnecessary? Just wanting to know if my Scarlett 2i4 interface will be enough.
Asked by: Eddie
My tests with the Tascam US 2x2 sounded good without a Cloudlifter, 2i4 should be just fine.

can i use this mic with recorders like zoom or tascam without loosing any quality because reviews mentioned it is best when pairing with rodecaster..?

It is best with the Rodecaster Pro due to the preamps. As with any recording device using a dynamic mic, you will need a good preamp to reduce the noise level.

I just received the Rode PodMic. I notice it doesn't have any adjustment knobs OR especially, a place to plug in earphones or ear buds. What's the alternative?
Asked by: Stacy
The Rode Podmic is a dynamic microphone, that would be connected into a a mixing board or an audio interface. Those devices would give you gain control and headphone monitoring.
