ikan PT4500 Overview

Make sure your talent can read their lines clearly from up to 17' away with this Professional High Bright Teleprompter from ikan. The durable aluminum teleprompter comes with a 15" LED monitor, 70/30 beamsplitter glass, a collapsible teleprompter hood, and all the mounting hardware you need.

The bright, backlit monitor features 1920 x 1080 resolution, 160/170° viewing angle, 1000 cd/m² brightness, and 4:3 aspect ratio, all which provide crisp, clear reading. The monitor has HDMI, BNC composite, and VGA inputs supporting a wide range of source options. The teleprompter comes with a collapsible hood, which includes an adjustable cloth boot to insert your lens.

There are multiple 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 mounting threads all around the prompter, and it comes with all the hardware needed for assembly and mounting on a tripod or rig. Three risers are included to fit which camera you're using: one for a DSLR or mirrorless camera, one for a larger camcorder, and one to attach a separately available VCT plate for mounting an ENG camera. Counterweights are also included in case the prompter becomes front heavy.

The entire kit comes in a custom-cut foam insert which can be repurposed when you want to transport it in a separately available case. An AC adapter and a copy of PrompterPro teleprompter software for Mac and Windows are also included.

Excellent teleprompting kit with few negatives.

Overall, there's much to like about this prompter kit: screen brightness, input flexibility, mounting system, the travel case, and the counterbalancing system. The negatives are, in my opinion, minor ones, and not enough to stop me from recommending it to others. I manage studio operations for a major hospital system where we do a lot of live and pre-recorded production. This Ikan teleprompter was a major upgrade from our old 11 prompter, which was incredibly limited, extremely heavy, dull, and had only one video input--VGA. The Ikan prompter's ability to take varied video inputs, especially HDMI, has been a great help for live streaming. It allows me to dial in to a Zoom webinar and feed it directly in to the teleprompter, keeping my subjects looking straight into the camera (and appearing to be engaged) as they watched what was happening on Zoom. This especially came in handy with a recent live streamed interview ABC News conducted with one of our doctors. The network opted for Zoom over our professional broadcast network, which worked out great because our doc could see the anchor while looking straight in to the camera. Typically, eyes shift away from the camera to look at the computer screen and subjects will continue to look at the computer screen as they talk, which looks ridiculous and incredibly amateur. The 15 screen of this unit is crisp and bright, providing the right amount of real estate for older eyes, but not too big where you can see a lot of eye shift as people read. I like the mounting system of this a LOT because I use several different types of cameras that include a full-sized JVC ENG camera, a compact JVC GY-HC500, a Canon C200, and soon, a Blackmagic Ursa 12k. Having the flexibility to use those cameras with minimal reconfiguring is fantastic. The old system we had required almost a full disassembly, which was a giant hassle, not to mention incredibly bulky and cumbersome. Since I use so many different cameras, the counterbalance system has been a big help in offsetting the varied weights of the cameras. My previous system required sliding the entire unit forward or back, which was tedious. The weights-and-rails system of the Ikan greatly simplified setup. This prompter system will remain a studio system for me. For those who do a lot of field production, I think they will find the travel case to be robust and the foam inserts to be helpful to keep everything secure. I think it took me just under 30 minutes to set up the prompter the very first time. So what is not to like in this kit? It does have a few negatives, namely the Ikan prompting software, PrompterPro 4. My prompting is Mac-driven, and the software is flexible for both Windows and Mac, so that's a plus, but some quirks about it can be very maddening, especially when it comes to speed adjustment. Maybe I'm not doing something right, but I use two fingers on the trackpad to adjust the speed, and it's SO tricky and sensitive that sometimes I wish I still used Word and scrolled with a mouse. Editing text is awful. You can't edit directly; the program takes you to a basic text screen (not WYSIWYG) and if you're plugged into an external monitor (the prompter via HDMI), the text is super tiny and difficult to see. It would be great to be able to have the ability to edit inline. My final frustration with the software is going back to the beginning of your script. Every time I move the cursor to the return to top button at the top of the software screen, the top bar of the Finder drops down and covers the controls. Little quirks like that drive me crazy. There are a couple of professional prompter software packages in the Apple Store that are more to my liking. Any time I have to use one of the compact cameras, I have to attach them to an elevated mounting rail that has a slotted center that allows the mounting hardware attached to the camera to slide forward and back closer to or farther away from the glass. The large screw requires a stubby flathead screwdriver. A wing nut or screw with a knurled knob would be more convenient. While it's a bit nitpicky, I do wish this unit's BNC connector for video input was SDI-enabled (it's a *composite* BNC input). Thankfully, all of my cameras have HDMI output, so when we do high-end productions requiring subjects to look directly into the camera when interviewed (instead of slightly off-camera), the interviewer can be seen directly ahead and into the camera lens when a separate camera is put on the interviewer. That eliminates the need for a periscope-type setup. Finally, my last little negative is the shade or 'curtain' that fits around the lens. The clips from the shade material attach to a rubber skirt around the back end of the prompter. I have found that the clips aren't as secure as they could be, so they can easily slide off if I readjust the camera. Overall, the positives of this prompter kit outweigh any of the minor negatives I've come across. The upgrade from my old system is so noticeable that everyone seeing it for the first time comments about it as soon as they sit down.

We love this new ikan teleprompter, the design is far ahead of the other teleprompters we have. Adjusting balance and mounting different cameras is far simpler and the SDI input is a huge plus!

I've used several prompters over my 25 years in the industry and I can honestly say this unit sits near the top for field prompters. The Pros: the build quality on this unit is top-notch. Everything is well thought out from the engineering to the materials to the custom case. Con: I have one issue that kept me from giving it a full 5 star rating - and it is a small issue - the power input to the monitor is in a spot that can be tough to plug in if you don't leave enough room during assembly. Going forward I'll know to plug in the power before sliding the monitor onto the rails before tightening the screws. This unit is fairly heavy so be sure your tripod system can handle the load.

Great Teleprompter, Great Support, Poor Software

Just got this for a day of shooting talking head corporate social videos for a national brand client. Its easy to setup and their video on the site is SUPER helpful, I wish all companies did this. The clarity is fantastic and all the talent had a very easy and comfortable experience with it. I love the SKB case and that I can travel with it. It feels robust and professional and takes only a minute to setup.  I used it with a Sony FS-5 and the Fujinon CineZoom Mk 18-55 T2.9 lens and it worked well even with a really long lens on it. The weight and balance is pretty good even with a load like this. Id recommend using a heavy duty tripod with this as you will have quite a bit of weight especially if you kit out your setup, which I did.   So here are some things I noticed that could be better. Keep in mind I believe Ive received one of the few that have been sold thus far and Im sure ikan will improve these things.  1. I found several loose screws and a few fasteners floating around in the case upon opening it the first time. So they may want to check faster tightness before packing at the factory.  2. The software is a giant pain to get setup and get registered. Its actually made by a 3rd party and not by iKan. However iKan was EXTREMELY helpful in getting the 3rd party to assist which they did but it took 3 days and had me rushing to acclimate myself to it just before the shoot. Not a good thing.  3. The software needs more functions like presetting a desired scroll rate numerically and running that each time you trigger it. It also needs to have a proper full screen mode on the prompter display with side margin settings to control eye movement better.  Overall I am pleased with the product and I look forward to improved software over time.

I think overall this is a good unit. It is really well built, is a rugged and sturdy unit, and professional as F. Where it falls apart is that we are in 2022, and they have provided monitors that were suitable for the 1990's-early 2000's. I was shocked and surprised that they were not using a higher rez monitor. Very bizarre since we've been into 4K monitors for over several years now. They could have gone hi-def, HD, anything but what we're getting which looks a lot like standard def. I feel like they had overbought stock back in the early 2000s and have been trying to get rid of those monitors ever since. Extremely disappointed. Especially since we use the monitor for more than just scripts, and use it to bring in guests for podcasts, etc... This is definitely old tech. As for the talent monitor, same problem, old tech. But also there is no swivel mount on it, so the monitor is always at a 90 angel. If you bring the monitor closer to the talent, it is awkward. It should be able to swivel slightly. It would be such an easy fix. I would have given this a 5-star review if they had had decent monitors. I believe most people will be happier with an iPad version that has a similar design. Such a shame about the monitors.

Just to clarify, this prompter does include an HD SDI input? We were disappointed that our 12in iKan prompter had composite BNC and couldn't accept an HD signal.

The inability to see a number for how fast or slow I have set with their prompter app was not working for me. I purchased TelePrompter Pro 4 for $9 in the Microsoft store. It's worth every penny and more!

Responses show that the rig itself weighs 22 lbs without the camera. The recommended tripod (Benro BV10 Twin-Leg Aluminum Tripod Kit) states max is 22 lbs. Is there a better tripod for this unit?

The recommended accessories aren't always a perfect fit and are not necessarily designed for but could be an option for items. The CAME-TV 609B Carbon Fiber Video Tripod with Fluid Bowl Head has a maximum payload of 33lbs. and is a perfect fit for the ikan PT4500 15" High-Bright Teleprompter with 15" Talent Monitor Kit with Travel Cases (SDI).
