Saramonic SmartMic+ Overview

Record broadcast-quality sound straight to your smartphone or tablet with the Saramonic SmartMic+; a compact directional microphone that connects directly to your mobile device's 3.5mm TRRS jack without the hassle of cabling. Ideal for vlogging, live streaming, and mobile video production, the SmartMic+ features a lightweight and durable metal housing, which can be oriented to match the direction of your front- or rear-facing camera. A built-in bracket prevents accidental rotation of the microphone. Thanks to its plug-and-play design, this mic requires no batteries or charging; just plug it in, open your favorite recording app, and then go!

The condenser capsule delivers a tailored-for-speech frequency response of 75 Hz to 20 kHz, and utilizes a cardioid polar pattern to provide focused sound pickup with reduced ambience. Affix the included windscreen to attenuate wind noise and vocal plosives while protecting the mic from dust and dirt. In addition to the 3.5mm TRRS male plug for connecting to your recording device, the SmartMic+ has a 3.5mm TRS headphone port, allowing you to monitor audio without having to disconnect the mic.

Provides broadcast-quality sound to smartphones and tablets by plugging into your mobile device's headphone socket when shooting video, recording audio, live streaming, vlogging, podcasting, and more
Directional cardioid pickup pattern clearly captures sounds in front of the mic while rejecting sounds to the sides and rear
Can be positioned facing forward when using the selfie camera, or facing outward for standard shooting
Metal housing is lightweight, compact, and ultra-portable while maintaining durability
Simple plug-and-play usage; never requires batteries or charging
3.5mm headphone jack for real-time monitoring while making recordings (app dependent) and listening to playback without removing the microphone
Included snug-fitting foam windscreen reduces wind noise, and protects the capsule from dust and dirt
Built-in bracket prevents accidental rotation of the mic

Saramonic SmartMic+ Reviews

Modest iPhone Shotgun Mic

By Alex
Rated 5 out of 5

If you are looking for a simple to use shotgun mic for your iPhone look no further. Just plug in and hit record. It comes with a wind guard and a foam cover. The sound is a modest improvement over your iPhone's built in mic, and does a good job of leaving out any environmental noises. To be clear, there are better ways to get good audio on an iPhone video including a wireless lav mic or a more expensive shotgun mic. For the money, this is a nice solution that may work for some users who are not demanding a lot from an iPhone mic.

Improves audio

This mic certainly improves audio for iPhone SE mk1 but not usable on later models with lightning connectors. Grip very stiff but may loosen over time. Pass thru socket doesn't seem to work at back of mic.

A click is heard every so often in the final recording.

During the recording, a click is heard at every moment that makes the audio sound bad. I really do not recommend it, I thought it would solve my audio problems in transmissions with smarthpones, but not really.

I tried to use this mic to improve the sound quality of my video conferences. It just didn't make that big of a difference and then I have to set up a separate speaker to monitor the audio coming from the other end of the video conference. In my opinion, it's not worth the hassle

Microphone causes phone overheating and loud noise

this mic does not work as expected. It causes overheating of the phone and it also causes a loud and disturbing clicking noise to be overheard when listening back to the recording. I am extremely frustrated as hours of recordings have been lost without realizing it.

Works for online Piano lessons

Bought this for my wife. She felt she had to yell to get her students attention during online piano lessons. I just hook it to her iPad and connect a speaker on the backside and she can hear and talk normally.

Plug Broke during Second Use

The plug does not retract and is not reinforced in any way. During my second time using it, the plug snapped off.

Good microphone

Build quality is good. Design is great. Sound quality is also appreciated. However I expected it to be ahead of smartphone mics by a mile but evidently the difference is minimal. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish which clip was recorded by a smartphone and which was recorded by this mic (I own ASUS Zenfone 5, which isn't a flagship but has a semi-pro level mic). Also, the 3.5mm jack's position (at the bottom) isn't ideal, in my opinion.

Is there a compatible 'dead cat' windscreen for this mic to replace the foam windscreen?
Asked by: Pat
Mine came with the wind screen. If you need a new one, most likely BH staff can suggest one. But my guess is whatever works for the Rode videomicro, will work for this since the size is similar. If you're buying a new mic, I would skip this one and go for the Rode videomic GO ii.

No, the USB-C input on those GoPros is proprietary. The only way to get a microphone into those cams is to buy the GoPro 3.5mm microphone input adapter. Sorry.

Would this work on iPad Air as an external microphone for FaceTime calls?
Asked by: Donald
YES!. I just tested it with my iPad Pro which also has USB-C and it worked great. Keep in mind to hear the other caller you will need to plug-in a pair of 3.5mm headphones into the SmartMic+UC. The speakers on the iPad will not be in use when you use the SmartMic+UC. Also make sure that you plug in the microphone before you start FaceTime.

It is well made, but for my purposes I ended up purchasing a Shure MV88 Microphone to replace this microphone. The Shure comes in two different varieties (MV88 & MV88+), both are more expensive than the Saramonic Microphone.
