I bought this pack for my fiancée who wanted to avoid standing out in town. We like how the padded section can be adjusted in size, leaving room in the top for her day-to-day items while still holding her camera. It has room for a laptop and makes a great commuter pack. Dual water bottle pockets, decent padding, room for a couple of small lenses, plus snacks, wallet, keys, gloves, etc. I am thinking about getting one for myself to replace my north face pack that stands out in a crowd.

It is a fine backpack, but not what I expected. MY 150-600 lens does not fit as there is a soft pack at the top which I guess is good for stuff, so it was necessary for me to put my big lens in my check in bag for the flight. I hope the airline does not throw the bag and damage the lens.

Is the top compartment removable? Will it fit a d850 with 200-500 attached if top compartment removed?

The back-wall of the top compartment is removable, so you essentially could open up the whole back from top to bottom as one compartment. The Vanguard VEO GM 46M is quite shallow, and it does take the Nikon D850 + 200-500 but it does kind of push out of the bag, making it less comfortable than normal when worn. Your results/comfort will vary based on gear and personal preference.

Does this model have a waist belt and sternum (chest) strap? Seems important if you are carrying a load of camera gear.
