Godox V1 Overview

Offering a powerful 76Ws output along with a distinct design, the Godox V1 Flash is an advanced light source with features that clearly reflect the current state of the industry. Compatible with Sony ADI / P-TTL, this flexible on-camera light is distinguished by its round head, which provides soft, smooth light with gradual fall off that augments the flattering output. The head rotates 330 degrees, tilts -7 to 120°, and has a magnetic surface for lightning-fast attachment of Godox's accessory light modifiers.

The V1 is powered by a removable 2600mAh lithium-ion battery that will give you up to 480 full-power flashes on a charge, so you don't miss any of the action. Speaking of speed, the V1 recycles to full power in just 1.5 seconds, fast enough to keep up with your subject. It also supports High Speed Sync up to 1/8000 sec, for managing bright backgrounds and shooting with wide apertures, and the V1 supports front and rear-curtain sync.

The V1 has an optical slave but it's also got a built-in 2.4 GHz receiver, which accepts wireless signals from Godox X System transmitters. In fact, you can control up to four wireless groups in a master/slave configuration whereby settings made on the V1 are duplicated on the slave flashes. Other convenience features include an AF assist lamp, a 3200K LED modeling lamp, and a 2.5mm port for cabled triggering.

Godox V1 Reviews

V1 Does Double Duty

This unit is very advanced in its capabilities. On camera, off camera and as a radio transmitter to other Godox products. Ingenious. I came from the Nikon SU800 line of sight system, which was advanced for its time and worked within its limitations. Then I fussed with Pocket Wizards, which were (and are) great. I still use them in the studio with my aging Dynalite stuff. But being able to program the lights from the camera is so great. Minimal learning curve to get set up and running. Highly recommended. BTW...stick to buying these units from a reputable vendor. Some offshore vendors don't care if you encounter a problem.

A great alternative to Canon

First Godox and I am well pleased. Half the cost of Speedlite 600-EX and it does more. First round light and I like it:

Works fantastic. Rechargeable battery rocks

This flash is phenomenal, fantastic. The included rechargeable battery is a game changer. I would buy four if I needed more flashes. Why didn't I mark this a 5 star review? I expected to be able to control my Canon 420EX speedlight from this much the same as if I had a second Godox. It cannot be done. Not even the B&H experts could make it work. Off camera, you need a Godox trigger or V1/860III on camera. So, I bought the $69 Godox trigger for that need, but had to trash my old 420EX. Too bad. It still works perfectly.

Horrible hot shoe mount

I have been thrilled with the V1 up until my fifth time using it. The flash snapped right off my camera, the plastic shoe mount breaking in half. Never in my 8 years of wedding photography has this happened until now. The plastic hot shoe mount is a joke. It should be metal. If they would update the hot shoe mount this flash would have five stars. Great battery life and easy functionality.

The flash is great, hot shoe mount not.

As with many users have reported of this model, the hot shoe mount is not sturdy at all. I am currently replacing mine as the plastic mount cracked while on the camera. These flashes are not lightweight and so the hot shoe adapter interface will not withstand many repeated on and off mountings of the flash unit. The best way to use the V1, imo, is off camera using a Godox S2 ring adapter and not use the hot shoe mount hardware. And that is a major design flaw. I won't be ordering another one for sure.

A nice flash that can't be taken seriously.

If you're a pro, like me, get another flash if you're in situations where you must rely on a flash head to work. The plastic hot shoe attachment is TOTAL junk. The original broke so I ordered a replacement (it's a pretty widely known issue) and on my first wedding back with it the entire piece snapped in two spilling the flash head to the ground. Now it rattles and I can't tell if it works. Not worth the poor reliability, or quality. Luckily I had a different flash with me. To be fair, the circular head looks nice when it works, but it's just no suited for real world professional use. I also babied it know this was a potential issue.

Works like a charm

I bought this to be my on-camera flash and hoped it could also act as a master for my old Canon 420EX. Sadly, I will have to shelve the 420EX because they apparently only work with Canon masters. No worries, I can also use this off camera adding an inexpensive Godox on camera trigger. Works very well!

Sturdy Flash

I haven't really played with it much yet but it is a meaty flash. It recycles pretty fast. I look forward working with it much more.
