Backup critical data with the 4TB ThunderBay 4 mini 4-Drive SSD Thunderbolt 3 RAID 5 Array from OWC / Other World Computing. Featuring four 2.5" drive bays, this RAID array offers a total of 4TB of storage divided between four SSDs. Equipped with two Thunderbolt 3 ports, the ThunderBay 4 mini supports transfer speeds up to 1556 MB/s when using RAID 0, allowing for quicker backups or daisy-chaining multiple arrays for extended storage.

This array comes pre-formatted in RAID 5, but supports RAID 0, 1, 10, and 4 modes. The included software controller, SoftRAID XT, offers driver certification checks, email notifications, volume validation, and drive failure prediction. The software controller also allows for easy volume management, so you can choose what to use RAID volumes for and how much space is allocated for backup. The ThunderBay 4 mini is compatible with Windows 10 and later, as well as MAC OS X 10.13 and later. Furthermore, independent volumes can be booted with macOS. An ASMedia ASM-1062 chipset functions as the SATA Controller while an Intel JHL6540 controls Thunderbolt 3 operating modes.

Housed in black aluminum, the array features a locking front panel offering access to the individual bays. The back panel includes a Kensington Security Slot. The ThunderBay 4 mini comes with a 100-240V power supply, and outputs 12V and 6A, or 72W.

Air cooled, this array uses a single 60mm fan and is designed to operate in temperatures between 41 and 95°F. Measuring 7.5 x 4.6 x 3.8", the small form factor of the ThunderBay 4 mini is designed to fit desktops, racks, and DIT carts, with a total weight of 2.51 lb.

Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously.
Multiple RAID Levels
Arriving pre-configured in RAID 5, the ThunderBay mini 4 also supports RAID 0, 1, 10, and 4.
Multi-Drive Capable
The two Thunderbolt 3 ports allow you to connect up to five additional arrays for increased storage capacity.
Performance Quality Check
Each ThunderBay 4 mini receives multiple hours of burn-in by OWC, intended to ensure each unit is performing to the manufacturer's standards.

OWC ThunderBay 4 mini External SSD Reviews

after much research I chose ThunderBay mini

I have used a Promise Pegasus for years on a succession of iMac, beginning 10 years ago. Though not as fast as I had hoped that solution worked for general backup and backing up my library of photography, over 20,000 frames. But when I moved to a higher resolution camera, and Mac Studio, I needed a new solution. After much research I chose a ThunderBay Mini with four SSD drives in RAID 4 configuration. So far, it is working great, with amazing speed for my entire Lightroom Classic photo library. It was the right choice!

what is the speed difference between the HDD and the SSD raid?

In general, SSDs will have much faster read and write speeds than traditional HDDs. The read/write speeds of the hard drives included with this enclosure are not listed, but on average you can expect a SATA SSD to be roughly five times faster than a 7200 RPM SATA HDD.
