The Sky-Watcher USA StarTravel 102mm f/4.9 AZ Refractor Telescope is a compact yet powerful optical tube assembly (OTA) that can be used to see detailed views of celestial objects from the moon to bright deep-sky objects, or as a conventional spotting scope to enjoy terrestrial subjects like wildlife and birds. It is also portable enough to be used as a grab-and-go option over larger and heavier scopes, or it can be easily removed from the included mount and set up on a dual-mount rig for astrophotography/astroimaging. Its fully multi-coated achromatic doublet lens configuration corrects for spherical and chromatic aberrations to create images that are clear and bright without distortion across the entire field of view, with true color rendition.

This scope features a mounting cradle-ring assembly that clamps over the OTA and lets you adjust the orientation and position of the scope relative to the mount to optimize viewing comfort and balancing, while avoiding interference with other equipment. The OTA attaches to the mount using a Vixen-style dovetail plate, so it can easily be swapped with other compatible mounts, and other OTAs will similarly fit onto the mount. You control the mount using two flexible control arms with large knurled knobs for a sure grip. An aluminum tripod provides a stable and solid platform for observations. Also included with the scope are a 45° erect-image diagonal, a red-dot finder, and two eyepieces to get you observing right out of the box.

Optical Tube Assembly
  • Large 102mm aperture makes it ideal for viewing the moon, planets, and bright deep-sky objects like binary stars, clusters, and galaxies
  • Fast f/4.9 focal ratio reduces exposure times during astrophotography without sacrificing image quality, detail, or brightness
  • 500mm focal length helps to produce the fast focal ratio and makes the optical tube short for easier transport to remote observing locations
  • Two-element air-spaced achromatic refractor design produces rich views with reduced chromatic aberration and requires little maintenance
  • Anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission to ensure views are bright and clear with improved contrast and clarity
Focuser
  • Sturdy rack-and-pinion design can easily carry larger and heavier eyepieces, accessories like Barlows and focal reducers, and imaging systems
  • Large 2" drawtube provides unrestricted light throughput to ensure views are bright, along with complete coverage of camera sensors
  • 2" holder enables large 2" eyepiece accessories to be used without the need for adapters
  • Standard T-2 mounting threads on drawtube provide a solid connection point for astrophotography rigs or DSLR cameras equipped with optional camera-specific T-ring
Mount & Tripod
Mount:
  • Manual alt-azimuth design
  • Simple dovetail saddle makes setup and breakdown fast and easy
  • Cradle ring assembly allows the OTA to be precisely placed and oriented for proper balance and ideal viewing position
  • Long slow-motion cables enable precise alignment and tracking with reduced vibration to make views clearer
Tripod:
  • Lightweight and sturdy aluminum legs
  • Adjustable height accommodates a wide variety of users and viewing positions
  • Tray holds accessories like eyepieces and filters and provides a convenient place for a compass or cell phone to keep them safe and off the ground

Included Accessories
Eyepieces:
  • 1.25" nosepiece makes them compatible with the most popular size drawtubes, focusers, and accessories like filters, Barlows, and diagonals
  • 25mm eyepiece produces a low 20x power that allows users to see wide areas for observing the moon and constellations and scan the sky for comets
  • 10mm eyepiece yields 50x magnification to make detailed observations with a smaller field of view
Diagonal:
  • 1.25" nosepiece and holder make it compatible with a wide assortment of eyepieces, accessories, and focuser drawtubes
  • 45° viewing angle places the user's head in a comfortable viewing position when the telescope is parallel to the ground or pointed high overhead
  • Integrated erecting prism corrects the image vertically and horizontally, allowing the telescope to be used as a conventional spotting scope
Reducer adapter:
  • Allows the use of 1.25" accessories to be used in the larger 2" drawtube
Finder:
  • Red dot design provides a wide field of view to make alignment fast and star-hopping navigation easy
  • Provides an easy-to-see center aiming dot to make centering your target object simple

Nice scope

I finally had a clear night to try out this new scope. It is very easy to move in one piece. I do leave the eyepeice tray uninstalled so I can close the tripod when I carry it. The views were crisp. I viewed the Orion Nebula with and without a nebula filter. I could see the nebula and the trapezium quite well with or without the filter. I found the red dot finder worked quite well. I felt safe carrying this scope out through the icy snow....my huge, expensive, go to SCT will be used when there is no snow and ice to contend with. I am waiting for a solar filter to arrive...I think I will view the sun more often since I can carry this scope out in one fell swoop...so far I love this telescope.

Good beginner refractor

I bought this to do some amateur astronomy and as a spot scope for nature photography. So far I was able to get some good shots of the moon, and nature subjects about 1/2 mile away. I can spot topography on the Moon, a competent view of Saturn and Jupiter with 4 moons with ease. I don't know enough about astronomy to test other space objects... Assembly was easy. Though I think I will change out the OOB eyepieces. I had to find a T/2 mount for my camera to work.. It would be nice if there was a fine adjustment for the focus. Also being titled travel it would be nice if there was a travel bag available to purchase as well

Solid scope and mount

After a lot of research, I decided on this scope. I knew I wanted a refractor due to the lack of collimating and small cool down period. Set up was okay. There are no specific instructions. The mount seems stable and the tube seems well constructed. I took it out for a quick test. Unfortunately, one of the slow motion controls came loose and cut the test short. My quick view of the moon showed a bright, clear lunar view with a fair amount of color fringing but I can live with that. I love the 2" connection and the simplicity of adding a camera. Yes, this is a beginner scope but it gives you room to grow and add accessories. It's a bit heavy but I think it will transport well. I am looking to get a foam padded case for the tube. I hope for a positive experience with this scope.

Great Little Refractor

You can't beat this telescope for the price. No it's not an APO ... no it's not a triplet ... but at this price, it does everything it is supposed to do. It is well built and comes with a decent tripod (although I will be replacing the tripod for an EQ mount). It focusses surprisingly well, and even though it is designed for viewing wide view deep sky objects, it does a nice job on the moon as well (see attached photo). There is some color aberration when photographing the moon, but that is easily fixed in Lightroom. This telescope is lightweight and will make a great traveling scope when I need to get out to darker skies. If you are on a budget, this is a quality scope that costs less than half of the price of an apochromatic of the same size.

This question is for TELESCOPE OWNERS: I have a Canon M50 that I have attempted to connect to the scope. The connector I bought is apparently for the 1.25 eyepiece, I want to connect it directly to the 2" connector. What do I do? Also, when I did connect it via the 1.25, I could not pull the image into focus. What am I doing wrong?
Asked by: Gary
With 2" focusers, use the bayonet connection where your camera slides into the focuser. Might have to spend $20 on a new adapter for that (t ring-Cadapter---]focuser).
