OWC Drive Dock Reviews

Very Useful Tool

A great way to transfer images various media to bare hard drives. Transfer to and from NAS or RAID drives easily. Very good value for money.

Very useful for backup disks

This two-disk dock works very well for backups. I keep large numbers of video and photo files for video editing and web photo projects and have files from two computers separated and backed up on multiple hard drives. It is much easier to slap external disks into these docks for backup or storage than trying to coordinate multiple external USB disks or even a RAID. This is my second of these OWC units and both work great.

Easy but not the speed.

It was very easy to install and operate, it comes with 2 cables, USB type A and USB type C, this is great for me who have iMac and Windows notebook, but the speed was not even close to what was promised; copying a 35GB file took just over 2 minutes using a Sandisk SSD copying from my iMac with the USB C cable, a little frustrating.

Works well, MUCH faster then old drive dock

So I got my new OWC Drive Dock, USB/C 10MBIT/sec max. Here is my short report for my initial testing. Looks like a Mac Studio (maybe a little bit ), a bit heavy, very solid with lots of Aluminum for good cooling. Did not run warm at all, drives were lukewarm. Simple easy to use, just plug and play, comes with two cables, USB/c for 10MBIT/s and a Type A USB, 5Mbit/s, plus of course a power cable. Testing it out: * Copying35GB to a 7200rpm, 6GB Sata drive took a while, transfer speed hovering around 130Mbit/s (Compared to 20-35 on the old drive dock). Copying from the drive was at about 1 GigaBIT/s (!!!) to my laptop with a fast NVME drive) * Switching to a Samsung SSD 840 (an older drive I had laying around, specs say 540MBIT/S read speed, slower write for sure), I was copying to the drive at max 130MBIT/s, Reading to the laptop at 1-1.4 GBIT/s (!!!) The good is that the drive dock can handle 2 drives at the time, a mix of both large and small SATA connection drives, of which I have a bunch at much better performance than the old USB 3 dock, well worth it! I Wish it also had an M2/NVME connector, Recommended for sure!

I'm already a big fan of OWC. I am using bare drives for a cost effective way of archiving my video and photography work. They are silent and fast, will take all media. Highly recommend!

I have had this for a while and has worked fantastically, I really like being able to choose which hard drive I want to use without needing to start up both hard drives. Very nicely ruggedly built, it is no cheap looking docking bay, I highly recommend this.

Works just fine.

Ready to go out of the box. Plugged it in and inserted different drives with no issues. It's fast and reliable.

Does this dock support TRIM for SSDs?
Asked by: David
The dock is agnostic as far as TRIM is concerned. TRIM is a function of the OS and drive.

The "Most Helpful Critical Review" mentions that transferring data between the two drive bays in this USB-C dock is extremely slow. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it possible that review was for the Thunderbolt-2 version with only one SATA-to-USB chip, while this USB-C version has two SATA-to-USB chips?
Asked by: Matthew
This is not an issue that I have seen, nor do I get complaints of this from our customers. As far as the specifics of the review, I do not know enough of the specifics to speculate.

Is this a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 3 speed ...

Is this a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 3 speed connection or does it transfer at less than maximum thunderbolt 3 speeds? The spec says it is "Equipped with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C port" isn't this slower than thunderbolt 3 connection? And the spec says that : Drive Dock uses a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface with data rates up to 981 MB/s, and it is compatible with Thunderbolt 3 ports. - so is there a faster docking unit which is thunderbolt 3 speed rates. This seems like it has less than that.
Asked by: Elliott
The interface is USB 3.1, as stated. I believe the compatibility mentioned refers to the physical port/cable. If you will be using spinning drives (not SSD) you wouldn't be able to see any speed advantage with Thunderbolt3. It will be the drives themselves limiting speed.

Yes. The OWC Drive Dock uses a USB-C connection to the computer, and does support Mac OS. It will work for M1 Mac models. WD Black SATA drives will work, as well as any 2.5 or 3.5 inch SATA drives.
