EIZO CG279X Overview

By B&H Photo's

The ColorEdge CG279X 27" 16:9 Hardware Calibration HDR IPS Monitor from EIZO is a professional display with built-in color management hardware and software for HDR video editing and color-accurate photo editing. It supports the HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) and PQ (Perceptual Quantization) gamma curves for editing HDR video, as well as a wide color gamut for displaying images. The ColorEdge CG279X also has an integrated color calibration sensor and uses Stable Display technology to measure internal and ambient temperatures so it may adjust gradations, color, and brightness in real time.

EIZO designed the ColorEdge CG279X with an anti-glare panel, a native resolution of 2560 x 1440, In-Plane Switching (IPS) technology, 10-bit support for 1.07 billion colors, a 16-bit LUT, a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, a static contrast ratio of 1300:1, 350 cd/m2 brightness, 109 pixels per inch, and a 13 ms (GtG) response time. With the 178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles, it is possible to watch content from virtually any position. This display has one HDMI input, one DisplayPort 1.2 input, and one DVI-D input. There is also a USB Type-C port that supports DP alt mode, data transfers of up to 5 Gb/s using the USB 3.1 Gen 1 standard, and up to 15W of power for device charging. Additional USB ports include one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-B input, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A outputs with 0.9A of charging power, and two USB 2.0 Type-A outputs with 0.5A of charging power.

The CG279X has been engineered to support 99% of the Adobe RGB and 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamuts. Once turned on, its colors stabilize in around 3 minutes. To further help improve viewing and accessibility, it features a vertical tilt of -5 to 35°, a left/right swivel of 344° (±172°), a clockwise rotation of 90°, and a height adjustment of 6.1".

General Features
Built-In Sensor to Automate Your Workflow
The ColorEdge CG279X is equipped with a built-in sensor which can be set to calibrate the monitor automatically at designated times. This eliminates the need for a third-party calibration device and ensures your screen stays color-accurate. In addition, the monitor features sensor technology that allows you to continue using it even during recalibration. The sensor swings onto the screen, taking up minimal space, so your work remains uninterrupted.
ColorNavigator 7 Color Management Software
ColorNavigator 7 is calibration and quality control software for ColorEdge color management monitors. It combines all the features of EIZO's previous color management software, ColorNavigator 6 and ColorNavigator NX, to create an improved solution for creatives in a range of fields. The proprietary software makes calibration simple and produces predictable results for photography, design, print, and video creation.
ColorNavigator Network Color Management Software
ColorNavigator Network provides centralized quality control of ColorEdge monitors that have ColorNavigator 7 or NX installed. Administrators can set color modes, schedule self-calibration, register or adjust asset management settings, and other tasks whether the monitors are local or remote. ColorNavigator Network is hosted on a secure cloud server to free you from the initial investment and running costs of providing your own server.
HDR Gamma Support
The ColorEdge CG279X is equipped with HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) and the PQ (Perceptual Quantization) curve for displaying and editing HDR (high dynamic range) video content. The optimized gamma curves render images to appear truer to how the human eye perceives the real world compared to SDR (standard dynamic range). This ensures professional creators can reliably display HDR content for editing and color grading.
Vivid Colors Reproduced to Industry Standards
This wide-gamut monitor faithfully reproduces 98% of the DCI-P3 standard used in digital cinema and supports the BT.2020 standard used in broadcasting. In addition, it covers 99% of the Adobe RGB color space so images shot in Adobe RGB will be displayed correctly. The wide color gamut also ensures reproduction of almost the entire ISO-coated and US web-coated CMYK color spaces used in printing.
True Black Display
In compliance with the DCI standard, the ColorEdge CG279X offers a high contrast ratio of 1300:1 for producing true blacks that are otherwise difficult to display on a typical LCD monitor. When viewing the screen from an angle in a dimly lit room, dark tones typically appear washed out due to the display characteristics of LCD backlights. The CG Series is equipped with a retardation film, which allows tones to retain their depth even when viewed from an angle.
3D LUT for Accurate Color Display
A 3D LUT is included, which adjusts colors individually on an RGB cubic table. With the supported ColorNavigator 7 software's emulation function, creators can check how content will appear to their audience. The 3D LUT also improves the monitor's additive color mixture (combination of RGB), which is a key factor in its ability to display neutral gray tones.
10-Bit Simultaneous Display
With 10-bit simultaneous display from a 16-bit lookup table (LUT), the ColorEdge CG279X can show more than one billion colors simultaneously. This results in smooth color gradations and reduced Delta-E between two adjacent colors.
Broadcast and Cinema Presets
Preset modes for DCI-P3, BT.709, and BT.2020 ensure you can work in the appropriate color spaces and gamma values. In addition, preset modes for PQ (DCI and BT.2100) and HLG (BT.2100) are available for viewing HDR content. With the built-in calibration sensor, you can conveniently adjust or maintain the brightness setting for each preset.
Safe Area Marker
A safe area marker designates the area of the screen that will be displayed when the monitor is connected to a particular device. This allows you to check that subtitles and other text will be visible. The color of the marker is changeable to ensure it remains with any imagery.
Factory Calibrated for Smooth Color Gradations
The gamma level for each ColorEdge monitor is adjusted at the factory by measuring the R, G, and B gamma values from 0 to 255, then using the monitor's 16-bit LUT to select the 256 most appropriate tones and achieve the desired value. This ensures smooth color gradations in your images.
Stable Display Technology for ColorEdge Quality
The color and brightness of an LCD monitor can shift due to changes in ambient temperature and the temperature of the monitor itself. ColorEdge monitors are equipped with a temperature sensor for accurately measuring the temperature inside the monitor, as well as estimating the temperature of the surrounding environment. With this temperature sensing and estimation technology, the monitor adjusts in real time, so gradations, color, brightness, and other characteristics continue to be displayed accurately. Furthermore, EIZO uses AI (artificial intelligence) in the estimation algorithm of the CG279X so it can distinguish between various temperature changing patterns to calculate even more accurate correction.
Stable Color in Just 3 Minutes
A typical monitor takes 30 minutes or more for its brightness, chromaticity, and tone characteristics to stabilize. The ColorEdge CG279X takes a mere 3 minutes. Whether you are working in a studio or taking the monitor with you on location, you get reliable color display soon after turning the monitor on.
Uniformity Across the Screen
Fluctuations in brightness and chromaticity on different parts of the screen are a common trait of LCD monitors. ColorEdge monitors are equipped with EIZO's patented digital uniformity equalizer (DUE) technology, which counterbalances the influences that a fluctuating temperature may have on color temperature and brightness for stable image display.
Slimmer Bezels
The ColorEdge CG279X features a sleek cabinet design so you can focus more on the screen. The bottom bezel is approximately 46% slimmer and monitor depth approximately 20% thinner compared to the previous model.
Seamless Electrostatic Switches
The flat design uses electrostatic switches on the front bezel in place of traditional buttons for seamless access to monitor settings.
Built-In Carrying Handle
A carrying handle on the back of the monitor allows you to easily move it from one location to another.
Minimized Reflections with an Anti-Glare Panel
The monitor is equipped with an IPS anti-glare panel for high visibility. It also uses dimming technology to minimize flicker and help prevent eye fatigue for a more comfortable working environment.
I/P Conversion for Flicker-Free Display
The HDMI input of the ColorEdge CG279X supports I/P (interlace/progressive) conversion for converting the interlace signals from TV and video into progressive signals for flicker-free display.
Wide Viewing Angles with IPS Panel
The 178° wide viewing angles afforded by IPS panel technology allow two or more people to view the screen at once with little change in color or contrast.
Light Shielding Hood
The CG Series comes bundled with a shading hood that effectively prevents glare on the monitor's screen caused by ambient lighting. The ColorEdge CG279X's shading hood attaches to the monitor magnetically. This allows the users to attach the hood quickly and easily without needing to connect separate parts.
Ergonomic Stand for Comfort and Convenience
Adjust the screen to the most comfortable angle and reposition it to show your work to a colleague or client. The monitor comes with a versatile stand that offers height, tilt, and swivel adjustments. The stand is also equipped with a quick release that allows you to easily remove the screen from the stand with a single touch.
Multiple Inputs Including USB Type-C Connectivity
The ColorEdge CG279X features USB Type-C connectivity for making easy connections to your host system with a single cable. It is also equipped with a USB Type-B and four USB Type-A ports, as well as DVI-D, HDMI, and DisplayPort 1.2 inputs.
Limited 5-Year Warranty
ColorEdge monitors are backed by a manufacturer's limited 5-year warranty that covers all components including the LCD panel. Please note that usage time is limited to 30,000 hours.
Zero Bright Pixels
EIZO guarantees its ColorEdge monitors will be free from bright sub-pixels for six months from the date of purchase.
Brightness and Color Warranty
The brightness and color of the ColorEdge CG279X is warranted for up to 10,000 hours from the date of purchase. A brightness level of 120 cd/m2 or more and a color temperature of 5000 to 6500K are warranted.

Favorite Monitor (Digi Tech)

I'm a full time freelance DigiTech, this is my favorite monitor for on set. I pair with the Tenba 27 case and travel with at least one to my jobs. Its rugged enough to stand up to some rough love on set. the self calibration is a game changer to say the least. Monitor takes a some time to warm up but once its ready the self calibration is quick, easy, and accurate. I no longer have clients asking which monitor they should look at for color because they all match perfectly every time

This is my 5th Eizo monitor and the best yet. Turn it on, push calibrate, and the prints and monitor almost match perfectly. Every Professional photographer should have this monitor.

Tested this monitor out at a bigger studio and immediately fell in love. Bought it the second I got home. This monitor is SUCH a game-changer. I'm not a professional colorist but I do a lot of color grading. This monitor is worth every penny. Best monitor I've ever used.

Don't Know How I Went This Long Without It

Absolutely love this thing. Was having a devil of a time getting my colors consistent when grading with DaVinci Resolve and outputting to multiple platforms. This monitor immediately took a lot of the guesswork out. I love that it calibrates itself so that I don't have to remember to do it.

Nice monitor, haven't figured out the calibration yet

This monitor makes my girlfriend (who uses a BenQ monitor) jealous. Of course, it should for the price. They call it HDR, but I'm not sure it can really be used as an HDR monitor for color grading, which is what I'm doing with it. I haven't dug in and calibrated the monitor yet, but the built in calibration feature seems very cool.

A beautiful display

Thought long and hard about which monitor to purchase for photo editing. Went back and forth about what resolution would be best. After much research and internal debate decided that QHD in a 27 monitor would work best and I haven't regretted my decision for a minute. Connected to my MacBook Pro and calibrated with ColorNavigator and can clearly see the difference between it and the display on the MacBook Pro (calibrated with ColorMunki and DisplayCal). The extended bit depth makes a huge difference! Colors are vibrant and editing is a pleasure, especially since my prints look as expected.

Large, bright, with easy calibration

I bought this monitor to replace one that was 13 years old. I wanted one that was large and easy to calibrate as I do a lot of work in Photoshop, Lightroom, and other products. As a photographer and digital artist, this is perfect for my work. While it is expensive, sometimes you have to pay for the best. This will automatically recalibrate after every 200 hours of use. That is perfect for me. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Best Monitor for printing & proofing

This is my second EIZO as my main monitor. The last one served me well for 6 years but it was time to get the latest and greatest. I certainly looked at the other ones but IHMO Eizo gets the nod as not only the best but at a fantastic price point. The built-in calibration is great and it helps to keep the monitor at a consistent level of greatness. If you're in the market for a monitor that gives bright, sharp, true consistent color the EIZO ColorEdge CG279X. does it all.

Does this monitor require a specific video card or what type of card is recommended for this monitor?

I have a Mac Pro with an AMD Radeon Pro Vega II running in Catalina. Finding the right cable was frustrating but obviously critical - Thunderbolt to DisplayPort is what worked for me finally. I wasted money on a few others first. I believe that operating system compatibility with Eizo's driver software is more significant than the actual graphics card. My older Eizo (CG275W) did not work with Catalina forcing me to upgrade my monitor. I am not sorry though. It's even nicer than my last Eizo.

Asked by: Si
Si - Following up to my previous email (dated Oct. 13, 2021), I did receive a reply from Eizo stating: "EIZO does not publish this information about its monitors. If you are interested in purchasing a ColorEdge product, our sales team may be better equipped to provide information." Not too comforting an answer for such a pricey monitor.
