HP 15v G5 Overview

Found in: Work Laptops

The 15.6" ZBook 15v G5 Mobile Workstation from HP is a high-performance system that has been built to supercharge and optimize your workflows. It is powered by a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5-8300H Quad-Core processor and 8GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM, allowing you to run multiple programs simultaneously and quickly access frequently used files and programs. When running more demanding programs or tasks, the processor can be boosted to achieve a speed of 4.0 GHz using Intel's Turbo Boost 2.0 technology. While the current memory configuration is 1 x 8GB, it can be upgraded to a maximum of 32GB by using one 16GB module in each of the 260-pin SO-DIMM slots.

The 15.6" Anti-Glare UWVA IPS display features an Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 screen resolution, a 16:9 aspect ratio, LED-backlighting, a brightness of 340 cd/m2, a contrast ratio of 1000:1, 282 ppi, and viewing angles of 85/85/85/85°. The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 chipset delivers a sharp, clear picture, and you'll be able to output video to an external display using the system's HDMI 2.0 port, as well as DisplayPort 1.2 via Thunderbolt 3.

For storage of your files, this system is equipped with a 1TB 7200 rpm SATA 2.5" / 7mm hard drive, and there are also two empty M.2 2280 slots for SATA or PCIe SSDs. If you want to add external storage, optical drives, memory card readers, printers, and more, the ZBook 15v G5 offers one Thunderbolt 3 port, which supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 and PCIe 3.0, and three USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports, one of which doubles as a charging port. Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac 2x2) are built-in for wired and wireless networking, and Bluetooth 5.0 technology will also allow you to connect additional compatible peripherals wirelessly, such as keyboards, mice, and headsets. Content from memory cards may be accessed via a built-in SD/SDHC/SDXC card reader that supports UHS-II flash media. Other integrated features include dual-array microphones, stereo speakers with Bang & Olufsen HD audio, and a 720p webcam.

HP's 15.6" ZBook 15v G5 includes a 120W AC adapter and a 3-cell / 52.5Wh lithium-ion polymer battery that supports HP Fast Charge and will recharge up to 90% in 90 minutes. The installed operating system is Windows 10 Home (64-bit) and also included is recovery media. Protection is provided by a limited 1-year parts & labor warranty.

General Features

ZBook 15v G5 Mobile Workstation

Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously. Additionally, you can daisy chain up to six devices from a single Thunderbolt 3 port.
Multi-Display Support
The ZBook 15v G5 supports multiple displays in several configurations. Using Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 with hybrid graphics, but without HP's Thunderbolt Dock G2, the system supports three independent displays, which include the internal panel and two external displays. When using the Thunderbolt Dock G2 and hybrid graphics, up to five independent displays are supported, provided DisplayPort is connected. These five displays include the internal panel, one external display connected via the system's HDMI port, and three external displays connected to the dock's USB Type-C, VGA, and two DisplayPort ports. If the Thunderbolt port is the only port on the dock connected, then the three external displays will not function.
USB 3.0 Type-A Ports
This ZBook 17 G4 features four USB 3.0 Type-A ports that will allow you to connect external peripherals such as additional storage, optical drives, printers, memory card readers, and more. One of the USB 3.0 ports also doubles as an always-on charging port for compatible USB devices.
Up to 32GB Memory
While this system natively includes 8GB of RAM in a 1 x 8GB configuration, it can be upgraded to a maximum of 32GB when 16GB memory modules are used in each of the system's two 260-pin SO-DIMM slots.
Drive Bays
The HP ZBook 15v G5 Mobile Workstation supports two internal drives: one 2.5" / 7mm SATA hard drive or SSD, and one M.2 2280 PCIe or SATA SSD. As the 2.5" / 7mm drive bay is used for the 1TB SATA hard drive, there are two M.2 2280 slots available for SATA or PCIe SSDs.
Gigabit Ethernet & 802.11ac Wi-Fi
The system uses a Gigabit Ethernet controller for internet access when connected to a router, modem, or network switch. It also features Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8260 which is compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi so that users may access network connectivity using wireless technology
Bluetooth 5.0
Additional compatible peripherals, such as mice, keyboards, headsets, and more may be paired using Bluetooth 5.0 technology.
720p Webcam
  • HD format (widescreen)
  • Supports videoconferencing and still image capture
  • High-quality fixed focus lens
  • Video capture at various resolutions up to 1280 x 720 (720p) and up to 30 fps
  • M-JPEG compression supports high frame rates for video capture and video conferencing
  • Improved low light sensitivity
  • Improved dynamic range
  • Windows 10

    Start Menu
After its hiatus in Windows 8, the Start Menu has returned. Utilizing a combination of the traditional menu system and Windows 8's Live Tiles, the improved Start Menu gives you more information at a glance, showing notification information alongside your applications and other pinned items.
Microsoft's digital personal assistant, Cortana can answer your questions with information gleaned from both your device and the internet at large. You can type or even talk with her, if your system has a microphone. Using her Notebook, Cortana keeps track of your needs and wants, and she learns over time to improve her information gathering skills.
    Microsoft Edge
After nearly 20 years, Microsoft has finally replaced its Internet Explorer web browser. With Microsoft Edge, users can write directly on web pages and share notes with friends and colleagues. It also improves the online reading experience by adding a distraction-free mode and read-it-later functionality. Edge also has built-in Cortana integration; you can have her help you find a restaurant, make a reservation, and pull up directions without leaving your browser.
    Windows Store
For Windows 10, Microsoft has unified the Windows Store. Now, apps for PCs, tablets, and phones will all be accessible from one place. And with support for Universal Apps, one version of an app can work across all your compatible devices automatically.
    Windows Continuum
Windows 10 was designed for a variety of screen sizes and input styles, and with its Continuum feature, it automatically adapts to fit your needs. A Windows 10 tablet on its own requires a touch-centric approach, but attaching a mouse and keyboard will shift everything to a more traditional interface. You can even attach an external monitor to your Windows 10 phone for a near-desktop experience. But it's not just the operating system; Windows Universal Apps take advantage of Continuum as well.
    Xbox on Windows 10
Gaming is a big focus of Windows 10. Xbox integration allows for PC players to match up against Xbox One players on supported games, and if you have an Xbox One, you can even stream compatible titles to your PC. Native support for recording with the new Game DVR feature makes it easy to capture and share your gameplay. The new DirectX12 takes better advantage of multi-core processors, giving games a performance boost, even on older hardware. Windows 10 also features native support for virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift.
