Comprising a versatile set of photo and video capabilities, the Lumix G95 from Panasonic is a Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera also characterized by its sleek and portable design. Featuring a 20.3MP Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine, high-resolution stills can be recorded with a wide sensitivity range of ISO 200-25600 and continuous shooting is supported at up to 9 fps with AF-S. UHD 4K video recording is also supported at 30p and pre-installed V-Log L enables a wider dynamic range of up to 12 stops for greater color grading control during post production. Also, 4:2:2 8-bit output is possible when recording externally via micro-HDMI and both headphone and microphone jacks support improved audio recording. Additionally, complementing the imaging capabilities, a Dual I.S.2 system that offers the use of both in-camera and in-lens image stabilization systems to effectively minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to five stops.

Benefitting the versatile photo and video capabilities is a compact form factor and a durable, weather-sealed design to suit working in inclement conditions. For eye-level viewing, a 0.74x-magnification OLED viewfinder is featured with a 2.36m-dot resolution for clear viewing. The rear 3.0" 1.24m-dot LCD incorporates a free-angle design to benefit working from high, low, and front-facing angles and it is also a touchscreen for intuitive operation. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enable wireless remote camera control and image transferring to a mobile device.

20.3MP Digital Live MOS Sensor and Venus Engine

Optimized for high-speed high-resolution imaging, the G95 features a 20.3MP Light MOS Micro Four Thirds sensor and an enhanced Venus Engine processor to create sharp, detailed stills and UHD 4K video. This configuration maximizes resolution while keeping noise to a minimum, permitting the use of sensitivities up to ISO 25600. It is also quick, enabling continuous shooting rates of up to 9 fps with AF-S and 6 fps with AF-C.

UHD 4K Video Recording

Supplementing the camera's stills capabilities is UHD 4K video recording at up to 30p with an 8-bit color depth and 4:2:0 sampling while recording internally. Alternatively, external recording is supported via micro-HDMI with 4:2:2 sampling and 8-bit color depth. V-Log L has been pre-installed on this camera and is used to capture a flat, neutral gamma curve well-suited for grading. Slow motion video is available with support for 120, 90, and 60 fps in Full HD resolution. Additionally, both a 3.5mm headphone jack and 3.5mm microphone input are available for improving audio capture.

5-Axis Image Stabilization and Dual I.S. 2

Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. 2 combines the G95's 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for up to five stops of camera shake along with a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. 2 requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S.

Body Design and Wireless Connectivity

  • A large OLED Live View Finder has a high 2.36m-dot resolution and 0.74x magnification for eye-level composition.
  • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.0" 1.24m-dot rear LCD monitor has a free angle, tilt and swivel design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.
  • Constructed from magnesium alloy with a die-cast frame, the G95 features a durable design that also incorporates extensive sealing at joints, dials, and buttons to render it both splash- and dust-proof.
  • DMW-BLC12 lithium-ion battery offers approximately 290 shots per charge or approximately 1000 shots per charge when working in the Power Save LVF mode. Additionally, the battery can be charged in-camera via USB or via AC power.
  • Built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 Low Energy connectivity allows for wireless image sharing and remote camera control from linked smartphones and tablets. Bluetooth LE also enables a constant connection to your mobile device, allowing for functions such as geolocation and automatic image transfer.

4K PHOTO Modes

Utilizing the G95's video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:
  • Burst: This mode will allow you to continuously record, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record images one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.

Post Focus and Focus Stacking

Another attribute of the 4K capabilities is a unique focusing method called Post Focus. Working in conjunction with the contrast-detection focusing system and the intelligent Depth from Defocus (DFD) technology, Post Focus records imagery as a 4K MP4 file at 30 fps and shifts the specific point of focus throughout the burst shooting in order to offer a range of distinct focusing ranges to choose from. During playback, via the camera's touchscreen, you can then tap the specific region of the image you wish to be in focus and an 8MP JPEG file will be created. Multiple individual files with different points of focus can be created from the original burst, and focusing assist functions can also be used to gain even more precise control over the specific in-focus region.

This technology also allows for producing focus stacked images in-camera to realize a greater depth of field, especially when photographing close-up subjects. In this mode, images are recorded and saved with varying points of focus and then blended together to gain an extended depth of field.

49-Area Depth-From-Defocus AF System

For accelerated autofocus performance, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position, which enables continuous shooting up to 6 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. When working with portrait subjects, face/eye detection capabilities make it easier to photograph people and prioritize focusing as specifically as on a subject's pupil. The focusing sensitivity and speed can be adjusted to further improve performance with certain subjects. Additionally, AF sensitivity down to -4 EV supports working in low-light conditions

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation. MF Assist can also be used to increase magnification by up to 20x for more critical focusing on specific subjects.

Lumix G Vario 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens

Included with the camera body is this versatile 24-120mm equivalent wide-to-tele zoom, which is well-suited to a variety of shooting applications. This POWER O.I.S. system pairs with the camera's sensor-shift IS system, using Dual I.S., for effective control of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The lens also utilizes a trio of aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element to minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and sharpness.

Other Camera Features

  • A mechanical focal plane shutter enables a fast maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 sec, as well as a top flash sync speed of 1/200 sec. An electronic shutter function also avails a top shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec to better enable working in bright conditions and with wider aperture settings.
  • Live view composite recording is a unique long exposure mode that releases the shutter at designated intervals of exposure time and synthesizes portions of the image with high brightness to produce a single well-exposed image. This mode is well-suited for high contrast scenes and live view can be used to preview how the target subject exposure is affected over the course of multiple composited exposures.
  • Photo Style modes: Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, L. Monochrome, L. Monochrome D, Scenery, Portrait, Custom, Cinelike D, Cinelike V, and V-Log L.
  • Filter modes: Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.

Panasonic DC-G95 Reviews

Fantastic!

I took this camera with me on vacation and was floored with the magnificent photos and videos it was able to take. It was lightweight and great at any time of day. My only negative was shooting indoors at low light, as the images turned out a little grainy.

I've been waiting and waiting for Lumix to come up with a camera with the V-log installed, and they finally did. Plus they lowered the price $400. The 12-60mm kit lens that comes with the camera, is sharp and clear, and the money that I saved allowed me to buy a secondary lens to complete the need. Although I mainly shoot video, I find this camera a great Photo camera as well.

The purchase of this lumixg95 camera adds years of life to my cameras. I have the gh3 (2013), gh4 (2014) and the Gh5 m2 (2022). The gh4 has gotten more use and long hours of recording in 4k, my main work with it is conferences, which is more time of use and consumption of energy and heat, which is not good for any electronic equipment in the tropical Caribbean. But even so the gh3, gh4 have not failed me at any time. The purchase of the g95 will now have the job at the conferences since it can be connected to electricity and there is no need to worry about the small battery it has. The others will be for documentary projects, supplemented by g95's 4k. I can only say of lumix that from 2013 until now they have not failed me. I am the one who has failed by forgetting to put the sd card or not charging the batteries.

Very good - Better build quality than my Qlympus cameras.

Excellent image quality and performance. I shoot 99% photos but have tried the video and pleased with that too. Ergonomics and build quality are better than the Olympus and Sony cameras I use. Very solid feel and the button design, grip and menus seemed more intuitive to me even though I'd never used Lumix before. Autofocus is very fast and accurate for contrast detect system. In good light I'd say it's on par with my a6000 Sony. Low light performance seems better than the EM10 MkIII I'd been using for my M4/3 lenses. IS with non-stabilized lenses is very good and exceptional using the dual IS with the 12-60. Though the 12-60 is not a fast lens, the excellent IS allows very sharp hand held images at longer exposures and is sharp throughout the zoom range. Love the solid feel and even with mechanical shutter, it is very quiet. Really a great deal for the body/lens combination, as it's just a few hundred more than if you were to buy the lens by itself.

First, the elephant in the room, Panasonic Autofocus; While it is still a DFD camera, it actually works well. Face tracking is on-par with Canon Dual Pixel autofocus. Both systems will occasionally lose focus and hunt around, but still work well. With the G95, there is some pulsing in lights behind your subject. I would not use a fast lens with this camera (F 2.0 or faster) as the pulsing might be more obvious. I give the G95 4 stars if it were $1k or more. But, for $7-800, it is a 5 star camera. The video features and ergonomics are class leading. All the buttons and dials are excellent for one-hand control. The 5 axis, dual IS that works with all stabilized lenses, is better than most other cameras in this price range. 1080 at 120, and 4K at 30, look fantastic. Flippy-screen and mic/headphone jacks are a plus. Audio sounds better than all of my Canon cameras. Weaknesses: -Still photos: Not for sports! Must really on very fast shutter speed to get decent images of kids playing. Even 4k photo burst mode has trouble with kids running around. -Battery sensitive: The camera does not work with cheaper (Wasabi or Kastar) batteries. Must use Panasonic batteries, or Power2000 brand. You'll needs extras. Battery life is not great with any of them. I would recommend this camera for video work. For stills, just use a very fast shutter speed, in good lighting. The button and dial layout is similar to the new GH6. The G95 may be a good B-cam for the GH6, and also a way to practice for that much more expensive camera.

Way below expectations

I purchased two of these with the expectations that they would be a good backup to my normal real estate cameras. For the average person I'm sure it's fine, but in real estate I require usable quality. I put it in Raw, and got all my settings in order as best I could, and even at lower ISO's the images are hazy and grainy. Just not useable for what I need.

I've watned to upgrade to a mirrorless system and did a lot of research. I didn't want to break the bank but I wanted something that would last and the Panasonic Lumix got good reviews. I haven't had it long, but so far so good. It came with a standard kit lens, but I bought an additional 45-150 and we shall see what we shall see ... (see what I did there? :)
