Hoya A-77ND8X-GB Overview

  • 1Description

The Hoya 77mm ND (NDX8) 0.9 Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance.

Multi-coated to minimize reflection at the filter surfaces which reduces flare and ghosting.

Neutral Density filters have four main uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

2x = ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO 1/2)
4x = ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO 1/4)
8x = ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO 1/8)
As one of the premier filter manufacturers, Hoya filters continue to made from quality glass assuring the photographer clear, sharp and accurate images
Hoya filters consistently provide even color all the way through the filter; All surfaces are ground and polished to specific thickness and tolerances

    Hoya A-77ND8X-GB Reviews

    77mm ND (NDX8) 0.9 Filter (3-Stop) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 81.
    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great light cutter Not much to say- I've had excellent results with the Hoya Multi-Coated in the past so I ponied up for this nice light cutter. No disappointment. Could you get by with a cheaper model? Sure. Throw it on your kit lens and fire away- your pictures will probably look the same as mine. But since I'm using pro lenses I guess I'm just a sucker for pro filters! I saw no color casts or uneven tones with this unit when trying to blur some water.

    Rated 3 out of 5 by from HMC + mono-coated? I have been using HOYA filters for 2 decades and familiar with them. This one I just purchased is well made too and doesn't use clip-on spring anymore, but the rear glass surface is mono-coated while the front is HMC. I have compared with my other HOYA filters before drawing this conclusion. ... Also, it has slight warm cast, not serious but noticeable.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hoya Neutral Density 0.9 Filter is great I shoot with Canon 5D Mark III and a kit lens and I've been shooting landscapes for a while. Someone suggested getting a ND filter from my favorite store B&H and they would help me pick the correct number filter which they did. I love this filter my shots of a waterfall came out great. The filter is durable, fast and doesn't take away from your shot but adds to it. You get the smooth water effect. I highly recommend this filter if you want to shoot landscapes with water in them.

    Rated 4 out of 5 by from DOES have outer filter threading as well So far so good, works as advertized, very close to 3 stops (maybe 2.5-2.75) stops darker. It also has threading on the outside, so you CAN use a polarizing filter at the same time (which should give you something like 5-6 stops total! I thought that only the Hoya 'pro' version of this had the outer threading, but i was pleasantly surprised.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality, Great price I think Hoya circular filters are the best deal out there. The are great quality and don't empty your wallet. I do get a slight blue cast with them, but I tend to lean that way anyway, and it can easily be fixed in post if needed. This 3 stop was picked up to help achieve blurred water and to shorten dop for portraits. I also use a square filter system for my graduated filters, and these screw ins are threaded so can be used in conjunction with them as well. The filter is even across the field and seems to be a true 3 stops. Delivery from B&H was very fast and well packaged as expected. Yes B/W and Singh are probably better quality in some way, but Having tried them as well, I have no complaints about the Hoyas.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from very nice filter, quality construction this is a nicely put together filter boasting beautiful glass. i think top of the line hoya filters are just as good as B+W's (of which, i have many). the major difference being B+Ws are made of brass and the hoyas are made of aluminum. otherwise, the glass is just as good in my opinion.

    Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Filter Great for long exposures during the day. Want that water to blur without blowing out the background? This is the one to use. For iPhone users download the app Longtime to get the right exposure.

    Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works fine but construction is just OK The filter works fine but on arrival I found that the snap ring that holds the filter in place in the mounting ring had popped out. It isn't a very tight fit. I got it back in but I am worried that it might happen again under use. In use I am very pleased. I can now slow my shutter way down when desired and not overexpose in bright light.
