Teradek VidiU Go Reviews

This device does what it says

We have used this for two remote government live streams. Bonding was very important for us. The first broadcast failed due to very poor cell reception in the area. We are adding external antennae, changing one of our two nodes away from Telna and to Verizon, and more carefully studying cell tower placement and directed antennae at future streaming locations. For the second broadcast we hadn't fixed any of that, but the location had better reception AND we tuned the Teradek core settings. The result was an amazing HD live stream. We are very happy with this, but do pay attention to those settings. Out of the box it doesn't really just work, you gotta learn the settings. Also... Teradek Core HEVC is a GREAT lever to have for low cell reception areas, but it is significantly more expensive to use. So if you can avoid using it, do!

Need additional app for bonded

Works as it should. In order to use bonded you have to also sign up for one of two cloud based apps. So you have to pay for your sim card usage thru one account and then have a form of subscription thru either core or sharelink. You can use the modem without the app but it will not use the bonded feature without an app.

We have major connectivity issues where we are and our live stream for our church is really important especially in this season. Vidiu Go has been great with the cell bonding to help strengthen our stream. It's an wonderful product.

Advanced Features...BUT...Unreliable at Times

We picked up the Vidiu Go Deluxe Kit with the Nodes this year and after years using the Teradek Bond II, I was SO excited to jump into a much more current system. The Vidiu Go checked all the boxes on the tech side and overall, it performed well on MOST streams. But most streams isn't good enough for our critical work. We needed EVERY stream to go well. Keep in mind our streams were not always in a controlled environment. But that's why we needed a device like this. And we didn't let a few small issues get us down. We powered through dozens of streams with this and again, it worked really well most of the time. But every now and then it would crash or have an issue or glitch that would cause the stream to go down. For that reason we decided to put it up against the LiveU Solo and ran extensive tests on both for 3.5 weeks. I wanted the VidiU Go to win. And it did when it comes to what it's capable of. I loved the H265 transcoding, but despite being proficient and comfortable with CORE (the backend for vidiu go) there were even issues that that Teradek was working on or even admitted might never get fixed. We'd literally spend days running various tests on both devices and by the end, one thing was clear...the LiveU was far more reliable, even though it wasn't as feature rich. It got the job done every time, without issue. And reliability is the MOST important part of a device like this. There's so many things that can go wrong with a live stream. Network connectivity, the encoder, the transcoding, the cameras, the cables, the media...etc, etc. We noticed from the very beginning that there were small issues with our Teradek unit. We were in close contact with Teradek support and they were initially very helpful. Don't get me wrong...it worked most of the time really well. Unfortunately, they confirmed several of the issues we were seeing were just bugs that they're working on. Okay, fine. Moving on. But then we had several streams go down entirely for reasons Teradek couldn't explain. We asked if our unit was defective but after running diagnostic tests, they said it's fine. However, we had our wifi module inside completely die during a stream. As in, it just stopped and wouldn't recognize ANY networks. Nothing showed up. And that caused all of our other modems to stop working as well despite having great network speeds. These same networks we were still connected to with other devices without issue. A reboot of the unit fixed it, but that was 3 minutes of the stream we lost. Teradek support couldn't explain it. Again we asked, should we exchange it? They said no, it's fine it's just sometimes things like this happen. This issue wasn't the sole issue we experienced either. We had numerous glitches within Core that would delay our ability to go live and again, Teradek wasn't able to figure them out. Keep in mind...most of the time it worked great. Most of the time. Teradek is a great company. We still use their wireless transmitters for our live streams and they're great! And the Vidiu Go does work. It's not bad by any means. But we ran more tests than any single person ever would consider doing because our entire business this year (2020) is based on live streaming. We're very aware of how best to establish and maintain solid network connectivity. We used the nodes and the Telna SIMS (which worked pretty well and we even decked our VidiU Go out with Teradek's bigger antennas to optimize everything we could. But little bugs and bigger glitches drove us away. Teradek support is a complicated thing. Because of Covid, they're short staffed. But sadly, even when full staffed, there's really only one guy there who knows this device. If you don't get him (he's AMAZING by the way!) then we found ourselves teaching THEM about the device in our conversations. They mean well but they're really specialists in other areas and taking educated guesses about the device we have. They'd send general help articles that were outdated and would sometimes take weeks to respond to calls or emails. And if you don't get the one main guy, you're likely getting someone who won't REALLY know the ins and outs of the Vidiu Go so good luck getting answers to more technical questions. I felt bad for them actually. They have a great device here and even though it has bugs, they try to update and fix as many as they can via firmware. Unfortunately, some issues they just didn't know how to fix yet. So maybe in 2022 they'll have it all figured out. Who knows. In the meantime I couldn't be happier with our LiveU Solo. Initially I missed some of the cool features the Vidiu Go had like higher bitrates, and H265, CORE'S detailed bandwidth graphs and even the headphone jack...but those perks faded away as we had literally dozens and dozens of streams go off without a hitch. It just works. And sadly, that's something I could not say about the very promising, but unreliable Vidiu Go.

Great! I can stream multiple platform! Can stream in 4 Facebook account & 4 YouTube account as well using only a single HotSpot connection! I'm going to add 2 side modem adds-on so that it will be more safer to not losing the connection.

Love it!

reliable, easy to operate, efficient and transparent user interface, just what I need. Sometimes does not recognize videosignal, instead streaming black image, not indicating video error. Solution: change resolution to other value on videosource (seamless switcher), then switch back to desired res. The VidiU recognises signal immediately...

Good Streamer, Beware of Audio when Shoe Mounting

We have used Teradek equipment in the past with good luck. We really like the built in title and scoreboard feature. One big thing about this model I would like to point out is when shoe mounting it. This box has a cooling fan on the bottom. When using the cameras built in mic on the camera the fan is audible and is noticeable when recording. We have external mic inputs so when we are stationary it isn't an issue. But if you plan to use this on the go it is something you need to be aware of.

Must the VidiU Go have the nodes attached to use with USB 4G modems or can it connect directly to them?
Asked by: Pesi
The Teradek VidiU Go can either use branded cellular modems (available separately from cellular service providers) or their own Teradek Node Modems (SKU: TE100024), which will work as the modem, but will require a data plan and a SIM card from your cellular provider. The Teradek Node is advantageous as it offers "two to three times the performance of carrier-branded modems" (according to Teradek).
