Characterized by an uncompromising design, the Canon EF-mount Otus 100mm f/1.4 ZE from ZEISS is a short-telephoto apochromat featuring a refined construction to excel in a variety of shooting situations. The portrait-length focal length pairs with the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture to afford extensive control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques, and it also benefits shooting handheld in low-light conditions. Suited to shooting at a variety of working distances, a Sonnar optical concept is employed, along with a floating elements system, to retain high sharpness and contrast throughout the focusing range. Additionally, a series of aspherical and low dispersion glass elements are also used to reduce distortion, color fringing, and aberrations for a well-corrected image quality. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Its manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Otus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable anodized metal lens barrel surface along with engraved focusing scales and distinctive high-visibility yellow paint.

Short-telephoto prime lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 160mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Sonnar optical concept suits the combination of a large maximum aperture and long focal length, and also contributes to notable sharpness, well-controlled flare, and high contrast.
Apochromatic optical design utilizes nine anomalous partial dispersion elements to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
One aspherical element controls distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 3.3' to infinity.
Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales, which are filled with a high-visibility yellow paint, along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

I love this lens, it is tac sharp, gorgeous and the best 100mm you can find for a full frame 35mm camera. I love the Otus line and have no real complaints. Something to consider however, is the size and weight of this lens. I personally don't like using this lens handheld. First off, I usually shoot locked down, so that's my go-to anyway. But secondly, the weight of this lens combined with it being manual focus makes hand-held shooting a little clumsy in my opinion. But if you're going to be on a tripod or camera stand, this lens is truly a great choice. If you want something a bit lighter and are willing to sacrifice a tiny bit of speed, I also HIGHLY recommend the Zeiss Milvus 100mm F2 macro. The quality is fairly close to the Otus line, but much smaller and with a more approachable price point.

I have used zeiss lenses on my nikon d810 and d850 for several years. I love the color depth these lenses give and the sharpness. Now, with the z mount being nikons new standard, I hesitated to buy an f mount lens The manual focus is so much easier now on the z7ii camera that it encouraged me to consider this lens when it went on sale for the holidays. I love the new z mount lenses. Their sharpness is superb, but I always have preferred the subtle colors and smooth transition to out of focus of the zeiss lenses. The Otus 100mm lens is the best lens I own and I'm including the other Otus lenses when I say that. The 100mm Otus is slightly sharper than the 85mm Otus and I love the 100mm bokeh because of it's longer focal length. Either is fantastic depending on the subject. The 100mm Otus lens is easy to focus handheld using live view magnification and focus peaking. Not fast, it does take some time, but accurate so I don't use it on moving kids. The colors are richer and the lens is sharper than my nikon 105 f1.4 which is a great lens. I've not used the sigma 105 art, but when I saw reviews where the same subjects were photographed with the sigma, the nikon, and zeiss 105 and 100mm lenses respectively, I preferred the zeiss for overall rendering of the images. I think part of it is taste. The sigma give a crisp looking very sharp image and it nails the sharpness. The nikon is lighter and has excellent image quality, but not quite as good as the Zeiss. The Zeiss is sharp, but it has more nuances of color. The image on the left is f3.2 and on the right f2.0

A Wonder With The R5

Attaching protos from this lens would do no good, since they would need to be down sized and compressed for transmission and monitor viewing. The only way to understand the image quality of Otus lenses is to compare them in large prints with those of competitor's images or to view them on a high definition LCD screens like the one in the Canon R5 viewfinder. Given its size and weight, not to mention its price, this is not a lens for everyone, but if you are willing to pay the price for superb image quality and accept its mass, you will not find a better full frame lens. Compared to other super sharp lenses, Otus models produce superior levels of contrast, while recording amazing detail. (One can obtain comparable levels of contrast with super sharp competitors only in post processing using curves or by setting in-camera Jpeg contrast high enough to destroy much of the detail those competitors would otherwise record.) Because the R5 allows very accurate manual focusing, and because for $100 or less it can be adapted to an EF mount, it is the perfect companion for Otus lenses. Because it has a high pixel count, it can take advantage of the fine detail this lens produces. Because of its sensor shift technology, the pair produce image stabilization. (This lens only comes in mounts for Canon and Nikon, and the latter version is in f/2; while the Canon is an f/1.4.) The fastest way of appreciating the superior sharpness of the Otus is to compare its images with those of a super sharp lens of similar focal length, at the same f-stop as the wide open one of that other lens (which won't be as fast), shooting the same subject, in the same light, at the same distance. Doing so is an eye opener. I already appreciated the quality of this line of lenses. I had managed to buy each of the other three used in excellent condition. I had been searching for months trying to locate a similar bargain on this lens, but it was the newest of the four and there were apparently few out there. When B&H offered a fantastic holiday discount on a new one, I jumped at the chance. I'm glad I did.

Otus is Zeiss state of the art lens series. ZEISS Otus 100mm f/1.4 ZE Lens for Canon EF is a small telephoto lens with one of the sharpest optical quality and built for portraiture excellency. ZEISS Milvus 100mm f/2M ZE is a macro lens. Both lenses are extremely sharp but when compare side by side under portrait option the Zeiss Otus series is superior. Physically Zeiss Otus lenses are almost twice the weight and substantially larger than Zeiss Milvus series.

same as 85mm Otus ...cool- lux 90-91..I recommend the appropriate ring for all Otii, Milvus and Loxia..Percy Seaton-Smythe calls it a very useful aid even if not doing video. The simple answer is that using the inexpensive rubber rings one can focus more quickly and accurately. Desirable for manual focus.

The Otus lenses are designed for F and EF mount (D)SLR cameras, but can be used on mirrorless cameras via a compatible lens mount adapter. There are currently no plans to expand the range of mount offerings at this time.

The first place to start is by comparing the technical data, in particular the MTF, vignetting and distortion charts. This will give you an objective overview, without influence of camera or subject matter. Of course, the latter has relevancy and the best way to compare is a side-by-side shoot out by renting the lenses from a reputable company.
