G-Technology's 2TB G-DRIVE mobile Pro Thunderbolt 3 External SSD is preformatted for macOS 10.13 and later, and may be used with Windows 10 via a simple reformat. Included is a Thunderbolt 3 cable which provides bus power, meaning that no external power sources are required and protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

Please note that this drive will only work when directed connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. It will not work on Thunderbolt 2 systems using a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, as not enough power is available.

question

Thunderbolt 2 compatible ?Could I also connect to to an old Macbook pro Mid 2015 by using a Thunderbolt 2 cable connected to Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, and this adapter connected to the external disk ? Thanks!
Asked by: Mathieu
I just opened up my new MacBook Pro (2019-8 core-i9) replacing my mid 2012. I bought the 1TB G-Drive T3 SSD, the 3t to 2T cable, and the HYPER HyperDrive DUO 7-in-2 USB Type-C Hub. I needed to move 400GB of files for FCP editing from older (non 3T) external powered hard drives (Gtech). Was excited as I connected the new 1TB G-Drive (using the3t/2T cable to the old T2 external drive . uh...the new 1TB drive light didn't come on. Tried every combination of cables, computers (I also have an iMac 27"), and drives...nada! The new 1TB 3T would only power up if directly connected to the new MacBook Pro 3T female. So-the answer above is right....reason for this posting then, is that I finally used the HYPER HyperDrive DUO 7-in-2 which connects to two of the new MacBook Pro T3's and offers (yeah 7 other connections-and ironically the one which worked was the old USB port! So, connected the old drive with an old cable to the new MB pro and the new drive to the MB pro and was able to transfer the files...albeit awfully slowly. I reread the 3T to 2T cable information and couldn't find where it wouldn't work with the 1TB G-Tech, SSD, 3TB connection.

The previous replies state the drive only powers up with MacBook Pro with T3 what about the MacBook and new MacBook Air with T3?
Asked by: Ron
The G-Technology 1TB G-DRIVE mobile Pro Thunderbolt 3 External SSD will only work when connected directly to a Thunderbolt 3 port of the computer using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. So this will work with the MacBook Air (Late 2018 and after) that has two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Can I connect this G-drive directly to my Sony A7R IV via USB-C and transfer files directly to this drive without a computer?
Asked by: Celestino
No, this drive will need to be connected to a PC. An option for a drive that you don't need a PC to use would be the Gnarbox 2.0: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1437308-REG/gnarbox_gnar512v2_2_0_ssd_512gb_external.html
