Characterized by its exceedingly durable design, the red Tough TG-6 from Olympus is a sleek point-and-shoot capable of handling a wide variety of adventures. Featuring a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor, the TG-6 offers notable image clarity and low-light performance to ISO 12800, along with fast 20-fps continuous shooting, 4K30p video recording, and high-speed Full HD 1080p shooting at 120 fps. Complementing the shooting capabilities is a versatile 4x optical zoom lens, which spans a 25-100mm equivalent range, and has an f/2 maximum aperture to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions.

Beyond just imaging, the TG-6 also sports a robust set of features for withstanding the elements, tracking your adventures, and sharing your images. The camera is rated for underwater use, tested to withstand falls and crushing, and is hermetically sealed against dust and moisture when working in trying conditions. Additionally, a Field Sensor System incorporates GPS, a manometer, compass, and a thermometer for recording the details of your environment and embedding this data onto your photos and movies. Using built-in Wi-Fi and the Image Track app, recorded data and the imagery can also be shared to a mobile device for posting online.

Tough Design
The TG-6 is designed to withstand a wide variety of conditions, ranging from harsh climates to everyday mishaps:
  • Waterproof-rated to IPX8 for use underwater to depths of 50' / 15m
  • Freezeproof to temperatures as low as 14°F / -10°C
  • Shockproof to falls from 7' / 2.1m high
  • Crushproof to withstand up to 220 lbf / 100 kgf of pressure
  • Dustproof-rated to IP6X to protect the internal components of the camera
Also benefitting the camera's use outdoors, the lens has been sealed with double-pane glass to prevent fogging and condensation. The camera body design has been configured to permit direct operation while wearing gloves, included a large zoom lever, accessory lock button, and convenient dial control.

12MP BSI CMOS Sensor and TruePic VIII Processor
Utilizing a 12MP BSI CMOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor, the TG-6 offers a mixture of speed and sensitivity to suit both photo and video applications. The BSI design of the sensor affords cleaner image quality at higher sensitivities, up to ISO 12800, for working in low-light conditions, and the processor further helps to reduce noise and expand the dynamic range. The sensor's cover glass design has also received an anti-reflective coating to help suppress flare and ghosting when working in bright conditions. Additionally, the processor avails a 20-fps continuous shooting rate in raw as well as the ability to record UHD 4K30p video and high-speed Full HD 1080p video at up to 120 fps.
4x Optical Zoom Lens
Spanning wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, the built-in 4x optical zoom lens covers a 25-100mm equivalent range and has a bright f/2 maximum aperture to suit working in low-light conditions. Additionally, image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 2.5 stops to further aid in creating sharp imagery with slower shutter speeds.
Field Sensor System and Built-In Wi-Fi
Ideal for recording data while shooting in the outdoors, the Field Sensor System includes a GPS module, manometer, compass, and a temperature sensor. This data, along with the photos and movies themselves, can be transferred to a smartphone via Wi-Fi where the tracking data can be embedded or overlaid onto the images themselves using the Image Track app. Additionally, both photos and videos can be searched-for using recorded tracking data.

In addition to wireless transfer, the built-in Wi-Fi also allows you to remotely control the camera and wirelessly share images to a linked smartphone or tablet.
Other Camera Features
  • Rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor offers a bright, clear means for shooting as well as image playback and menu navigation.
  • Pro Capture Mode will automatically sequentially shoot from 0.5 to 10 seconds before the shutter is pressed to ensure you don't miss a shot.
  • Five separate underwater modes are available to produce more accurate shots when working in or near the water, and include Underwater Wide, Underwater Macro, Underwater HDR, Underwater Snapshot, and Underwater Microscope. Additionally, three dedicated underwater white balance modes—Shallow, Mid-Range, and Deep—help to improve red and blue tones depending on the depth in which you are shooting.
  • An apt close-up shooter, the TG-6 has four separate shooting modes within the Variable Macro System. Including Microscope, Microscope Control, Focus Stacking, and Focus Bracketing modes, you are able to photograph subjects as close as just one centimeter away.
  • A 2x Digital Teleconverter function extends the effective zoom range to 8x, or a maximum equivalent focal length of 200mm, when working in Program, Aperture Priority, or Movie modes.
  • Using a 25-point autofocus system, a variety of focusing features can be used depending on the type of subject you are photographing, including Face Detection AF, Focus Area Selection, and AF Tracking. Manual focus is also possible, with Manual Focus Assist and Focus Peaking functions to help.
  • In-camera time-lapses can be recorded using an interval timer, with 1-second to 24-hour intervals for up to 299 consecutive images.
  • Date Imprinting mode can add a timestamp to your still images.
  • Picture Modes: i-Enhance, Vivid, Natural, Muted, Portrait, Monotone, Custom, e Portrait, and Art Filters.

Olympus TG-6 Reviews

Rugged and easy to use. Great.

Used one at our surf camp for three years. Subjected to salt water, heat, cold, drops and smacks! Very tough camera with great picture quality! Easy to use. A great dependable travel camera. A 10x lens would make the camera perfect.

To be honest, it's my son using the camera. He's mostly taken swimming pool snaps of his cousins-- sharp and colorful. A great camera.

Excellent water-proof with RAW

In 2015 I purchased TG-4 for a river raft trip. It has served me very well on all sorts of adventures. Now 8 years later, I decided to go for the newest model TG-6 prior to an Africa trip. It's not only tough 'n small, but it shoots RAW (yay), its color rendition and exposure are terrific, and it's easy to use. For diversity, I like to have it on hand as well as a digital SLR with a long lens. I can switch between the two. Both give superb image quality. The TG-6 can comfortably go where the larger camera cannot. Love this camera.

I expected more from Olympus

I'm a long-time fan of Olympus products, especially in regard to optics; they always outperformed the competition, in my opinion. Not here. In all candor, my 5-yr-old iPhone does better, especially in bright light. I didn't find the images to be especially sharp and the contrast was disappointing. On the other hand, it's sealed tight and it's definitely tough so I don't worry about taking it out on one of my frequent kayaking trips.

Waterproof camera with good image quality

Like this camera, it is relatively easy to use and the picture quality is good, I like that it can produce both RAW and JPEG files plus Video. The camera is waterproof without extra housing which is a plus when snorkeling. missing manual mode though.

Do not use in water

Only used camera twice. Second time took snorkeling in 4 feet of water. Worked for awhile then stopped working and have not been able to turn on since. All compartments were closed and locked. Very disappointed in quality of camera.

There are 5 RAW modes. Pure RAW, RAW+small JPG, RAW+medium JPG, RAW+Large JPG and RAW+Fine (I think that one is TIFF). Easy to access. Fast focus and fast onboard image processing.

The tg zoom range is 4.5-18mm (35mm Equivalent 25-100) There is No official "Zoom to Aperture map". But in some quick testing at about 7.3mm(40mm equivalent) the aperture will switch to f2.8. at 10mm f3.5, 13.5mm f4.0, and at 18mm f4.9

Can it be used for video blogging?
Asked by: Pablo
Hi Pablo, I’m not a blogger so I may not be the best person to ask. It’s a sturdy camera-at least the TG-4 was. I’ve had some problems with the TG-6. The video quality is very good. The screen does not flip out which I know is something bloggers like. Probably for blogging, depending on what you’re doing, it’s probably a choice between that and a Go Pro. I’ve used both and like the TG-6 more. Hope that helps.
