Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Overview

Pairing a cherished short-telephoto focal length with an exceptionally bright maximum aperture, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is also characterized by its advanced optical design to produce well-corrected imagery. The fast f/1.2 design excels in difficult lighting conditions and also benefits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. The optical layout incorporates a Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element; a specially developed element that helps to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity and color accuracy. Individual elements also feature an Air Sphere Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for high contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities is an apt ring-type Ultrasonic Motor, which delivers fast, near-silent autofocus and full-time manual focus override. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself.

Portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element virtually eliminates color fringing and chromatic aberrations by refracting shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum (blue light).
One aspherical element and one UD element also help to control aberrations and distortions for sharper, clearer image quality.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms, a high-speed CPU, and an internal focusing design, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

GREAT INVESTMENT-MUST HAVE LENS

I've had my eye on this lens for a while now, been renting it here and there and finally decided to make it mine. It now stays on my camera for portraits and family sessions. Best investment ever!

I procrastinated buying this lens for months due to the cost, but in a fit of impulse I bought it and now regret not buying it sooner! What a truly incredible lens - worth every penny. If you're sitting on the fence... make the investment it produces the most beautiful images.

Best 50mm lens for the price!! Very sharp.

Love this lens, I meant why wouldn't you for the price!?! It's sharp even wide open, unlike non RF lenses (EF). I don't use it for video, so can't say anything about that but images, it's a stellar lens for under $200.

Best

The optical quality of this lens can only be matched and in a few cases slightly better by cinema lens costing $30,000+. The autofocus is amazing (R5 and R3 bodies). Build quality is the best there is in the RF lens lineup in my opinion. It is a sealed lens. With a filter on the front you can handle anything (sand, dust, accidental spills) other than submersion. Event and Journalist video/photo people need this.

3 WOW! SIMPLY WOW 3 !!

First, I never thought I'd actually own this lens due to the combo of price and myself rarely shooting portraits. Despite having a R5 I didn't think I'd ever be able to justify the purchase even when absolutely everyone that uses it raves about it. Well.. I stumbled across a mint condition, second hand one for under $2000.. and it didn't take long to talk myself into it... Boy am I glad I did! All the hype, and amazing reviews are warranted. I've never used a lens that can make something as simple as a photo outside our front door look so freaking amazing. (Once I figure out how to attach the photo I will) If you have the chance and the $ to buy this lens stop reading and go buy it...now! It's incredible. I shoot primarily macro and landscape and I've honestly considered adding portraits and weddings JUST TO BE ABLE TO USE THIS MORE!! I actually get a little sad when I take it off the R5 to put on any other lens. Simply perfection 3

The speed of this lens made it perfect for difficult lighting when indoors. I used this for wrestling and basketball with great effect.

Just a great lens

I have been wanting this lens for a long time. And, it is just a beast on sharpness and is fast. I have always been a portrait photographer, and 85mm is the best length. However, when we talk about RF85mm f1.2 you have reached Mt Everest heights. The price is steep, but when it comes to the performance in low light it is truly hard to beat. And the Bokeh, is out of this world. If you do spend the money trust me you will have no regrets. Thanks again for your time

Level Up

Coming from an EF 85mm f1.4 IS this is a real step up. The Ef version is fast enough with good acutance, but suffers from some chromatic aberrations, especially in areas of high contrast. While with the RF you can see every eyelash in detail. Wide open at 1.2 it's sharp as a tac and images pop !!

Yes. Its focusing elements are completely contained and motorized within the lens, and the external positioning of the front element is unchanging.

The RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is not made for the 5d Mk III and only compatible with the new R-series cameras (R3/5/6/7/10). You require the EF version of the lens, but only a f/1.4 version currently exists (the EF 85mm f/1.2 was discontinued). https://bhpho.to/3mqrCPz

The EOS RP is made for all Canon RF lenses, and is in some ways better than the R, in any case (newer sensor, I believe, for example). In my opinion, it works superbly with this lens.
