Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Pairing a cherished short-telephoto focal length with an exceptionally bright maximum aperture, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is also characterized by its advanced optical design to produce well-corrected imagery. The fast f/1.2 design excels in difficult lighting conditions and also benefits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. The optical layout incorporates a Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element; a specially developed element that helps to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity and color accuracy. In addition to this, an ultra-low dispersion element and one aspherical element are also featured to further control various aberrations and distortion for great sharpness and resolution. Individual elements also feature an Air Sphere Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for high contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities is an apt ring-type Ultrasonic Motor, which delivers fast, near-silent autofocus and full-time manual focus override. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself.

Portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element virtually eliminates color fringing and chromatic aberrations by refracting shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum (blue light).
One aspherical element and one UD element also help to control aberrations and distortions for sharper, clearer image quality.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms, a high-speed CPU, and an internal focusing design, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Excellent Lens at a Premium Price

As a long time Canon dslr shooter, I have a tremendous amount of ef glass. I've slowly started to dip my toes into rf glass, having rented them and used loaner rf lenses on recent shoots. I mostly shoot sports and events. My standard set up for events is 2 bodies with a 70-200 2.8 living on one, and switching between a 24-70 2.8 and a 14mm ii on the other. I rented this lens for a recent 5 day job for a new client. I thought I would use it sparingly to get some wow shots to impress them. I ended up putting my ef 70-200 2.8 away after the first day, and having this 85 live on one of my camera bodies. It's an absolutely excellent lens. I shot it at 1.2 essentially the entire time I used it and it rarely if ever missed focus. Paired with my r5 I just cropped in on shots I wanted tighter composition on. The image quality is unlike any other canon lens I've used before. I used to hold my 135 f2 as the king of sharpness but it pales in comparison to this. The only reason I haven't bought this lens is because at the same price point I will have to get the rf 70-200 because I need the versality when shooting sports. If I was a only wedding/ event photographer this lens would absolutely be a must have.

I've had my eye on this lens for a while now, been renting it here and there and finally decided to make it mine. It now stays on my camera for portraits and family sessions. Best investment ever!

Just a great lens

I have been wanting this lens for a long time. And, it is just a beast on sharpness and is fast. I have always been a portrait photographer, and 85mm is the best length. However, when we talk about RF85mm f1.2 you have reached Mt Everest heights. The price is steep, but when it comes to the performance in low light it is truly hard to beat. And the Bokeh, is out of this world. If you do spend the money trust me you will have no regrets. Thanks again for your time

Level Up

Coming from an EF 85mm f1.4 IS this is a real step up. The Ef version is fast enough with good acutance, but suffers from some chromatic aberrations, especially in areas of high contrast. While with the RF you can see every eyelash in detail. Wide open at 1.2 it's sharp as a tac and images pop !!

I procrastinated buying this lens for months due to the cost, but in a fit of impulse I bought it and now regret not buying it sooner! What a truly incredible lens - worth every penny. If you're sitting on the fence... make the investment it produces the most beautiful images.

Next Level Portrait Lens

Expensive. Big. Heavy...those are all accurate when talking about the RF 85 f/1.2 lens, especially compared to the older and smaller EF version. A few more adjectives Sharp. Fast. Dreamy. are all perfect descriptions as well! Let's be real...this is THE portrait lens Canon shooters are dreaming of. Fast and consistent autofocus with the new mirrorless bodies means this isn't the diva the old version was. This is the lens to take your portrait photography to the next level.

GORGEOUS LENS!!!

I've had my eye on this lens for years, but always had the 135 f/2.0 instead. I finally realized that the 85mm was the perfect focal length so I didn't have to be so far away from my subjects and could still get that beautiful bokeh like the 135mm. This lens is insanely sharp! It's a tad slower in focusing on fast moving subjects, but if you aren't chasing after a fast 2 year old, you shouldn't have any issues. I use this for family portraits and weddings!

This lens is specific to the Canon EOS R/RP mirrorless full frame cameras with an RF mount. An EF mount lenses to fit a Canon full frame DSLR would be the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens, B&H # CA8512LEF2. https://bhpho.to/2xdXAou

Yes. Its focusing elements are completely contained and motorized within the lens, and the external positioning of the front element is unchanging.

The RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is not made for the 5d Mk III and only compatible with the new R-series cameras (R3/5/6/7/10). You require the EF version of the lens, but only a f/1.4 version currently exists (the EF 85mm f/1.2 was discontinued). https://bhpho.to/3mqrCPz

The EOS RP is made for all Canon RF lenses, and is in some ways better than the R, in any case (newer sensor, I believe, for example). In my opinion, it works superbly with this lens.
