Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Overview

By B&H Photo's

Pairing a cherished short-telephoto focal length with an exceptionally bright maximum aperture, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is also characterized by its advanced optical design to produce well-corrected imagery. The fast f/1.2 design excels in difficult lighting conditions and also benefits working with shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques. The optical layout incorporates a Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element; a specially developed element that helps to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity and color accuracy. In addition to this, an ultra-low dispersion element and one aspherical element are also featured to further control various aberrations and distortion for great sharpness and resolution. Individual elements also feature an Air Sphere Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for high contrast and color fidelity when working in bright and backlit conditions.

Complementing the imaging capabilities is an apt ring-type Ultrasonic Motor, which delivers fast, near-silent autofocus and full-time manual focus override. A unique Control Ring is also integrated into the lens design for intuitive control over exposure settings from the lens itself.

Portrait-length prime is designed for full-frame Canon RF-mount mirrorless digital cameras.
Exceptionally bright f/1.2 maximum aperture affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus applications and also benefits working in low-light situations.
Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics element virtually eliminates color fringing and chromatic aberrations by refracting shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum (blue light).
One aspherical element and one UD element also help to control aberrations and distortions for sharper, clearer image quality.
An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.
Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms, a high-speed CPU, and an internal focusing design, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Configurable Control Ring can be used to adjust a variety of exposure settings, including aperture, ISO, and exposure compensation.
As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM Reviews

perfect optics, undesirable haptics

I really wanted to buy this lens, but it would just be sitting in my bag because handling is so bad. TOP HEAVY, no joy to use it. on a tripod wouldn't mind, but want to shoot 1.2 handheld normaly. I've been shooting very heavy medium format systems, I have no problem with that. but such a lens on a canon body just is physically a terrible design. Perfect optics of course, great looks - but for portrait not a nice tool to use because of the handling.

The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens is an absolute gem for portrait photographers and enthusiasts who demand nothing short of perfection in their imagery. With its exceptional build quality, remarkable performance, and stunning image quality, this lens has truly raised the bar for portrait lenses in the Canon RF lineup. Let's start with the lens construction. The Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is solidly built and exudes a premium feel. The L-series designation is well-deserved, as it showcases Canon's commitment to delivering top-notch quality. The lens feels substantial in hand, thanks to its metal barrel and weather-sealed construction, making it suitable for professional use in various conditions. In terms of optics, the RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is a masterpiece. The ultra-wide aperture of f/1.2 allows for incredible low-light performance and superb background separation, resulting in breathtaking bokeh and creamy, dream-like portraits. The lens delivers exceptional sharpness and edge-to-edge clarity, even when shooting wide open, which is a testament to Canon's optical prowess. Autofocus performance is swift and accurate, thanks to the USM (Ultrasonic Motor) technology. The lens locks onto subjects quickly, ensuring you capture those fleeting moments with precision. The RF mount's advanced communication with Canon EOS R series cameras further enhances the autofocus capabilities, making it an ideal choice for both stills and video. One standout feature of the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is the impressive depth of field control it offers. With its 85mm focal length and wide aperture, you can achieve exquisite subject separation, drawing attention to your subject while beautifully blurring the background. This lens truly excels in portraiture, allowing you to create images with a captivating three-dimensional feel. Although this lens is on the heavier side, it's a small trade-off for the optical brilliance it delivers. The weight is well-balanced on Canon's full-frame mirrorless cameras, providing stability for handheld shooting while maintaining comfort during extended sessions. While the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens comes at a higher price point, it is a worthwhile investment for serious portrait photographers and professionals who prioritize image quality, exceptional bokeh, and superb low-light performance. It's a lens that elevates your creative vision and allows you to capture stunning portraits with unparalleled clarity and depth. In conclusion, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens is a true masterpiece, combining impeccable build quality, exceptional optics, and outstanding performance. If you are in pursuit of the finest portrait lens available, this lens should be at the top of your list. It empowers photographers to create images that leave a lasting impression, making it an invaluable tool in any photographer's arsenal.

Creamy Bokeh

This lens is premium. I did my first shoot with it last night. The headshots I took are tops. Previously, I was using my 70-200 2.8 for HS which came out fantastic, but I think this lens does supersede it in terms of clarity and also how it falls off with precise softness. The holy trinity supplies the lion's share of my shooting needs, but this packs quite the punch for portrait sessions. Stoked to have it in the bag.

I think this lens gives such beautiful images. I absolutely love the portraits I took with it and I am very impressed because I am a beginner and I don't yet know fully what I am doing. The fact that even I could take such beautiful shots gave me a lot of confidence.

Amazing all day lens

I was so excited about getting this lens after owning a previously much slower focusing EF 85mm f/1.2. This lens is one the sharpest and fastest focusing lenses in my bag and just as good as the RF 135 f/1.8. I almost always shoot wide open at f/1.2 and the focus never fails. It results in such beautiful background separation and is rivaled only by EF 200 f/2.0 lens. This is a must have lens for a wedding and portrait photographers.

My new favorite lens of all time

Was between this and the 50mm 1.2 for mostly cars and pet/people portraits. Very happy I chose the 85mm. The RF 70-200 was previously my favorite lens and I never imagined this would blow it out of the water. Everything looks incredible through this glass. People, cars, animals, you name it. Insanely sharp even wide open at f1.2. Dreamy bokeh, amazing colors, and fantastic clarity. The best lens I have ever owned in 15 years, hands down.

Incredible lens! I regreat going cheap and getting the 2.0, even though that lens are alright, this one is next level. I never though I’d shoot at 1.2 but here I am! All day long! It’s heavy but so worth it! I wish I got this lens before! Just buy it! I use a lot my 28 70 and though that the 85 wounds be a big difference from the 70 mm but it is! It’s amazing

This lens is specific to the Canon EOS R/RP mirrorless full frame cameras with an RF mount. An EF mount lenses to fit a Canon full frame DSLR would be the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens, B&H # CA8512LEF2. https://bhpho.to/2xdXAou

The RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM is not made for the 5d Mk III and only compatible with the new R-series cameras (R3/5/6/7/10). You require the EF version of the lens, but only a f/1.4 version currently exists (the EF 85mm f/1.2 was discontinued). https://bhpho.to/3mqrCPz

I am torn between the 85 and the DS. I am wanting to shoot Street photography with this lens, however I also need fast low light f1.2 for night Street. I do want bokeh and traditional bokeh from a 50 f1.2 is good enough. I'm leaning toward the standard 85 versus the DS as I don't want to lose a stop. Suggestions ?
Asked by: Leo
Unless you want "Defocus Smoothing" at all times when shooting at f/1.2, I would say the normal Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM Lens will be more versatile than the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L USM DS Lens. But, it's a completely personal decision based on your own esthetics.

The EOS RP is made for all Canon RF lenses, and is in some ways better than the R, in any case (newer sensor, I believe, for example). In my opinion, it works superbly with this lens.
