LaCie RAID Shuttle External HDD Overview

Designed for film sets, photo shoots, and music studios, the 8TB Rugged RAID Shuttle USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C External Hard Drive from LaCie lets you capture and transport data in the field, thanks to rain, dust, and crush resistance, as well as a drop resistance up to 4'. To better accommodate working in the field, the Rugged RAID Shuttle is both wide and flat to fit into bags and envelopes, and also features hardware encryption with password protection. With hardware encryption, no additional encryption software is needed to keep your data confidential.

LaCie's 8TB Rugged RAID Shuttle features a storage capacity of 8TB that is split over two 4TB hard drives, which support hardware RAID 0 and RAID 1. RAID 0 will stripe both drives together to deliver fast read and write speeds, while RAID 1 will mirror the contents of one drive to the other to create a 1:1 backup copy of your data. While RAID 0 delivers better performance, there is no data redundancy, so if your drive fails, everything will be lost. If you're thinking about using RAID 1 for its data redundancy, this comes at the cost of drive performance. RAID 1 will also reduce the capacity of your drive by half since it uses one of the drives for redundancy. So, under RAID 1, you'll only have 4TB of usable space.

Compatible with Windows 7 and later or macOS 10.10 and later, the Rugged RAID Shuttle has a 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface, which is also known as USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB 3.1, and delivers speeds of up to 250 MB/s. The USB Type-C interface may also be used with Thunderbolt 3 hosts and other USB generations, such as USB 3.2/3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) and USB 2.0, and power is provided using bus power from the corresponding interface. If you computer's bus-powered port does not provide enough power, a power adapter is provided. Included is a USB Type-C to Type-C cable. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year Rescue Data Recovery Services plan and also included is a 1-month membership to the Adobe Creative Cloud All Apps plan.

Note: The Adobe Creative Cloud membership must be redeemed by January 31, 2020, during product registration. A network connection and an Adobe ID are required. Available only to users 13 and older. Not available in all countries. See Adobe's site for more info.

LaCie RAID Shuttle External HDD Reviews

Good storage, easy to use.

Though slightly slower than I would prefer, I am comfortable that my RAW files, videos, and catalogs are safely stored.

rubber coating a liability on cable

This drive performance-wise seems fine but the USB-C cable port on it is hampered by the thick rubber protection and makes it so the cable doesn't seat fully to plug in. After closer examination I switched ends on the cable and some minor deviation in manufacture on the cable makes one end seat in the drive a little more firmly than the other. To say that the depth tolerance on the drive's USB port is a little too small and that the rubber on the case should be recessed slightly around the USB-C port.

It's not as fast as SSDs are, but good for long-term storage.

Configuration as zero raid was easy and could copy and paste 4TB of photo files from a full ssd, so have approx. 4TB of free space. Looks good so far. It looks rugged and is pottable

Mac Journal Encrypted doesn't work. Tried 3 units.

There is an inherit design flaw with this new LaCie product. The speeds are as advertised in all formats except Mac Journaled Encrypted. Once formatted to that type, the read speeds drop to 20MPS. This has happened on all three devices (that I have tried from different sellers). I have contacted Lacie support and all of them are just bottom of wage barrels support that can't understand any relevant technical term. As a photographer who only used LaCie products in the past (all Rugged RAID) this one is a complete fail and must be addressed quickly before losing the trust of many professionals.

Perfect for my 6K & 5K Komodo Needs

I use this as a shuttle for my Red Komodo footage and as a backup when needed. I'll definitely have to buy a second and third one at some point. You can't beat the size and price on this Beast. Beware that it does suck a lot of power, in my experience. LaCie Ruggeds are industry standard for a reason. It's well worth having a reliable drive like this for all your shooting needs!

Does this require wall power or is it bus powered? The photos and description are confusing.

I've got a 2015 15" MacBook Pro which has Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3 ports. I understand that I cannot get bus power using the supplied USB-A to USB-C adaptor. But, would I be able to get bus power using the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor?

For archiving, would you buy one of these and use in RAID 0 (for maximum size) or an 8TB desktop-size drive (losing the benefit of portability and encryption) ?

As an alternative, would using in RAID-1 be a secure and portable solution for archiving equal to a desktop drive such as a 2-Big 8TB (4TB per drive)? I view not needing an external power supply as a plus, no?

Should I use software encryption with this product?
Asked by: Clement
No additional encryption software required, since the Rugged RAID Shuttle already self-encrypts its data in real time and it offers password protection with its LaCie Toolkit utility. Actually, any additional encryption technology might impact the performance of the product

As the manufacturer has not specified the spin speed of this set of drives, it is safe to assume it is 5400 RPM.
