Awesome

Amazingly sharp lens. I use the Canon EF version for the 2x macro and I absolutely love this lens. The flexibility to back off and just take a 1:1 macro is part of why I love this lens. The lens feels well constructed and the lens feels extremely smooth when adjusting the magnification on the lens.

Good, if you know what you're doing

It's sharp. It's solid. Everything works as expected. The problems are entirely on the limits of the crop sensor DSLR I paired it with, and my lack of experience with or interest in getting better at full manual shooting. The few sharp, well-exposed photos I got looked great! B&H's RMA process was painless. They even offered an optional label to print out at FedEx for a reasonable fee deducted from the refund, and I will happily use it. I will save and put that refund toward a proper DX macro lens with support for all the trappings of modern life like TTL, autofocus, and image stabilization. If you're handy with full manual, this lens is for you.

Excellent clarity through the entire range. One reviewer complained that the barrel is exposed while operating the zoom. However, the lens I received came with a Laowa MC UV filter attached which I have found functions well to keep dust and jumpy subjects out of the lens without reducing image quality. The length of the lens makes subject illumination a little tricky, especially if you are using extension tubes. I am using a Meike MK-MT24 flash set attached to FotoPro DMM-903s arms. That set up allows me to easily illuminate subjects regardless of how close they are to the end of the lens. See attached images for the setup and some example photographs taken with that setup on a Nikon Z6 ii. All the images are straight out the camera with no focus stacking or other processing. The salt shaker is at 2:1, the springtail on a fungus is at 2:1 with Meike MK-Z-AF1 11mm and 18mm Extension Tubes, and the dried rose is at about 0.75:1

Excellent performer.

I am new to Venus Optics. This was, in fact, the first non Nikon F-mount lens I have ever purchased. Out of the box the build quality is impressive, far exceeding expectations at this price point. In the short time that I have owned, this lens has proven to be very capable, is easy to focus and extremely sharp. I highly recommend exploring the secret lives of little garden creatures with the Laowa 100mm.

Great lens, especially on a Nikon Z

I use a macro often and always use it in manual aperture and manual focus. This lens works great on a Nikon Z because of the Focus Peaking in the optical viewfinder.

Is there a tripod collar made for another lens that fits this? (by all accounts, the Laowa collar is terrible)
Asked by: David
The tripod collar for a Canon 70-200 f4L will fit. B&H sells the one made by Vello. At an auction site, I bought a metal one with an Arca Swiss base that fit this lens and my Canon 200 f2.8L. Do not buy composite ones as they flex a little.

Using an adapter like the Metabones Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Fifth Generation), B&H # MEMBEFEBT5 would allow you to control the aperture electronically on this lens. https://bhpho.to/2zPIXMH
