Does this fit onto a Canon R5 body without the battery grip? Or would you need a separate plate for those times you don't want your battery grip on? Thank you in advance.

It will not fit well on the body without the grip. You would need a separate plate for when the grip isn't on. Also, this is for the the original R the bodies between the R and the R5 are very different so you should go for items that are specifically for your camera.
