Samyang AF 45mm f/1.8 Overview

A sleek and versatile prime, the Sony E-mount AF 45mm f/1.8 FE from Samyang is a normal-length prime characterized by its compact design and bright f/1.8 maximum aperture. The optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element, which help to suppress spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness, color accuracy, and clarity. Compact normal-length prime is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 67.5mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.8 maximum aperture suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers increased control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus.
One extra-low dispersion element reduces color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
Two aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and resolution.
An Ultra Multi-Coating has been applied to individual elements in order to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and a neutral color balance.
The integrated linear STM autofocus motor works in conjunction with Sony cameras' focusing systems for quick, quiet, and precise AF control. Manual focus override is also available for refining your focus position.
Internal focusing design maintains the overall lens length and prevents the front of the lens from rotating during use.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

Samyang AF 45mm f/1.8 Reviews

Can't beat it for the money

I've been around photography and video since the early 1970s and made a good living with it thru the years but I sold a lot of my early gear. Leica Mll especially missed. The Sony A7C with the Samyang 45 is about as close to the Leica as I can get. This lens is terrific. I travel a lot and it is now my goto lens. Love it!

I have enjoyed the new lens. As other reviewers have said it is a bit noisy when focusing, but I have not found it annoying. Love the Bokeh. It has fit my amateur needs very well. I do recommend this lens.

I've been shooting old manual focus Nikkors in my wedding photography for the past several years. They're what I grew up with and mirrorless manual focusing is a breeze. But I simply can't keep up with kids running around, so I picked this up for a cheap option to cover the rare birthday party gig. I'm amazed! Incredibly sharp, incredibly smooth bokeh, super light and small. Autofocus is snappy. Does it feel cheap? Sure! Do my clients care? No! If I want to brag on the forums about a lens that feels good in the hand I'll talk about my old Nikkors. This is an excellent tool for getting the shot when your subjects won't sit still.

It's impressive how small it is and how it focus fast and it's also well built. The quality image is a little bit above my Tamron 28-75 2.8 but is below the Viltrox 85 1.8. I highly recommend it for Street Photography or low budget option. I've returned it 3 weeks later because I decided to buy the Viltrox 85 mm 1.8 to be used in my second camera during weddings. This was the only reason.

Good lens, lightly weighed, I was not disappointed, not at all. But the microphone hears all the movements of the lens, but I fix it happily :) The lens is just so precious, too great, that I let it enjoy itself on my Sony A7Sii. (I am from Iceland and use google translate :(

Compact, Lightweight, Sharp

I Love that the lens is compact, lightweight, and sharp. I try to shoot it at F2 or F2.5. I updated my copies firmware with the Lens Station prior to using it for the first time, and ended up fine tuning the AF -1. Human Eye focus works well on Humans, but I turned it off when focusing on my pets eyes and just used a small focusing point on continuous AF, which seems to lock on nicely. The only thing I don't like is the filter size doesn't match my Samyang 35mm and 75mm. Both of those are 58 filters and this is a 49 filter, so I have to carry an extra polarizing filter with my kit.

Very good for the price

I was looking for a cheap nifty fifty for Sony full-frame so I bought this lens because I saw it has a better build and optic quality than the sony 50mm 1.8. The only thing I was worried about is the autofocus because I shot mostly videos. The autofocus is pretty good, it is accurate and can track easily, and it's really quiet. It's not super fast and has some trouble in low light to lock into the eyes. but is much better than I expected. It does have some focus breathing. The lens is surprisingly kind of sharp from f1.8 but does have quite vignetting.

What version of the firmware does this come with in 2021?
Asked by: Joshua
I just received my lens (July 22, 2022) and it still has version 2 software on it. Version 2 was released on July 8, 2019 (more than 3 years ago). The curent version is version 6, which was released Sept 29, 2021. Either B&H is elling 3-year-old inventory or Samsung is trying to get us all to buy their Lens Station. Disappointed.
