Panasonic DMW-SFU2 Overview

Maximize the dynamic range and color output capabilities of the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1 camera with this Filmmaker Upgrade Software Key. This code unlocks a range of advanced video functions to further expand on the impressive video performance of the full-frame S1 mirrorless camera.

Once installed, the S1 will be capable of using the V-Log L gamma and V-Gamut, which offers a flat color profile and a wider, approximately 15-stop dynamic range for greater control during post-production color grading. The addition of this gamma also allows users to better match color with existing VariCam systems that feature standard V-Log, as both profiles utilize the same characteristic curve and LUT. This upgrade also enables recording 4K60 video with 4:2:2 10-bit sampling to an external recorder over HDMI, as well as internal 4K30/24 video recording with 4:2:2 10-bit sampling.

This upgrade is intended for use with NTSC-area cameras only and can only be used on one camera. It is for use with the Lumix DC-S1 only and is not compatible with the Lumix DC-S1R.

This is a fantastic update for the S1, but I wish the camera just came with these settings from the factory. You essentially get a box with a code that you activate on the Panasonic website. Export your serial and camera information onto a card from the camera body, upload to Panasonic, receive a text file, download file to SD card, upload to camera body, then, boom...settings that are already on the camera are unlocked. Seems simple (and unnecessarily costly), but I finally have the video settings I've been looking for. The camera is now capable of pro video.

If you're serious about video, this upgrade brings many great improvements to the S1. My favorite is being able to set shutter-speed in degrees. So much simpler when working with multiple frame-rates.

This was easy to install on the S1. No problems on the S1 far. Came with all the firmware updates.

So, I love that Panasonic released this filmmakers firmware upgrade and it really expands the capacity of the camera. The downside is that the process is rather extensive. First upgrade the firmware, then navigate to the other section of updates and track down the update. You need to export a code from the camera, upload that along with the code that comes in a large enough box to fit a pair of SSDs (maybe 8-12 comfortably packaged M.2 drives) and you can download the file to copy to the sd card (or cfexpress card) and select that file to unlock the feature. All of this seemed a bit over the top and it seemed like something that should just come with the camera. I suppose licensing V-Log from their pro level Varicam series might be the issue so it could be more complicated than simply giving away the update. Since I got the camera on the promotional sale, it came with the V-Log upgrade so it wasn't an issue. I almost didn't get the camera because the idea of paying for firmware upgrades seemed like bad faith. Ultimately the V-Log and camera both are fantastic so I am happy with the purchase.

This upgrade adds many of the S1H features to your S1 camera. 6K shooting, RAW external recording, Wave-form display, ability to set your shutter by degrees angle. ( keep the same exposure while changing the frame-rate ) Just make sure you are using the latest Panasonic camera firmware before applying this upgrade.

I see that Panasonic has released the DMW-SFU2 on their website however I do not see how to claim the free update. What is the process for this? I also tried the link provided in previous questions but that just takes me to the firmware update and not the upgrade software.

How is this different from the S1 firmware update v1.2?

The v1.1 and v1.2 improves IS and AF performance of the camera. The v1.2 adds an Activate function for "Upgrade Software Key DMW-SFU2". "Upgrade Software Key DMW-SFU2" is a separate firmware ugrade which adds V-Log for enhanced video color grading.
