Panasonic DMW-STC20 Lumix S 2x Teleconverter Reviews

Really really good, very sharp

Useful, but, as expected, not as good as a longer lens

The longest lenses made for the Leica L mount are the Panasonic 70-200 and the Leica 90-280. The latter is extremely large and expensive. I have been happy with the IQ of the Panasonic 70-200 (f4) on the Leica SL2, but needed extra reach for a trip to Yellowstone. The images with the 2x were OK, but (sort of as expected) not as sharp as with the native lens, especially when cropped (see images) and shooting handheld. I took it off the lens for the last day of shooting. I will buy the Panasonic L mount super telephoto zoom when it is released, and only use the TC when I absolutely have to have the extra reach.

Slight loss of sharpness but GREAT teleconverter!

The build quality is excellent, this teleconverter fits securely to my Panasonic 70-200 f2.8. I can move about with confidence and am also very happy with the autofocus. I've perceived no difference in autofocus performance. There is a minor decrease in sharpness, which is to be expected in a teleconverter. The decrease in sharpness is worth the reach for video and most of the time for stills. I report most of the time because the S1 does well with cropping images. If you find yourself at 200mm cropping significantly, this teleconverter will most certainly help retain an image that fills the frame. At the time of writing this review, there is no L-Mount super telephoto lens appropriate for wildlife or sports. This teleconverter is not an ideal substitute for such a lens but works for a great many scenarios, especially video. Ultimately the 70-200 f2.8 with teleconverter is significantly more workable for me than a sigma 150-600mm f5-6.3

Using this with the Panasonic S Pro 70-200 f/2.8 it is a great match. Designed for this combination and it shows. Sharp pictures and saves me from having to carry a 400mm while traveling for video and stills. Highly recommend.

No, the Panasonic DMW-STC20 Lumix S 2x Teleconverter is not compatible with the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art Lens for Leica L. For the Sigma lens you would need the Sigma TC-2011 2x Teleconverter for Leica L, BH #SITC2011 (https://bhpho.to/3F6JGFv).

I read it only works with 70-200 mm panasonic lens but the 24-70 is the same size 80mm? Will it not work with that lens?
Asked by: Thomas
Teleconverters are typically only compatible with tele zoom lenses and not wide to medium zooms. In addition the converter will not seat into the rear of the 24-70mm lens due to the rear lens element.

Since you loose 2 f stops, using on the Panasonic Lumix 70-200 F/4 is equivalent to f/11?
Asked by: Walter
That is incorrect. When using the Panasonic DMW-STC20 Lumix S 2x Teleconverter on the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/4 O.I.S. Lens, the focal length of the lens is multiplied by 2x while the maximum aperture of the lens is reduced by two (2) f-stops. As such, using the Panasonic DMW-STC20 Lumix S 2x Teleconverter on the Panasonic Lumix S PRO 70-200mm f/4 O.I.S. Lens would make the lens the equivalent of a 140-400mm f/8 lens.

It is not listed as compatible. Only way to know is to try it out. Even if it works you may get other issues such as error messages. I wouldn't recommend it.
