3TB Elements USB 3.0 External Desktop Hard Drive & 64GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Type-A Flash Drive Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 337.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speedy and Dependable I use this hard drive to make a cloned backup of my iMac's internal hard drive. By cloned I mean I can now use this hard drive to start my computer instead of the built in drive - it is bootable. I've tested it and it works great! I also use it to back up all the apps and other files I have stored on the internal drive. Lately, I even formatted it for Windows and backed up the hard drive on a PC notebook I own. That worked great too. For the price, it is a must buy, and B&H is the place to get it. The price is right, and delivery was on schedule. I have purchased many items form B&H, and they are an excellent firm to deal with

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value and tons of storage!! I ran out of space on my 1 TB computer drive and needed external storage.... fast! I searched for a balance of reliability and cost. From my research, WD has a much lower failure rate than Seagate and the price wasn't much higher. This 3TB drive was a nice balance of $$/TB, so I went for it. Plugged it in and it was recognized immediately! I will be using this primarily for photo storage and didn't need password protection that the My Book offers, so I was able to save a few bucks there. I plan to store all my RAW files on here and use the Smart Preview option with Lightroom as part of my new workflow. I'm back in business! Thanks B&H and WD!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So far.. so good Received it very quickly and it works just fine. I have Windows 7 64 bit and am using this external HD for backup. My PC is a Dell, with a WD hard drive. Since I have never used an external HD larger than 2TB, I did not know that I had to reformat the HD before doing my first backup with a system image. After my first backup attempt and receiving an error code, I did some research and found a solution on the Microsoft community forum... It was posted by dave6670 on 3/25/13. I downloaded the WD Quick Formatter from the WD site and used the WD Quick Formatter to format this external hard drive. After completing these steps, it was all good....

Rated 4 out of 5 by from USB 3.0 fast Using the USB 3.0 capabilities makes this hard drive really fast. It is a bit larger than the WD Elements 1 and 1.5Tb drives, but stands up vertical so footprint is smaller on desk. This drive takes a second to wake up, which also seems different than the older Element drives which didn't seem to have a 'sleep mode'. I use this through a USB 3 hub and it doesn't seem to compromise speed at all. Of note, FAT32 initializing doesn't work on 3TB drive, so can't get PC/Mac simultaneous usage. WD makes a great hard drive and I have been impressed with the longevity of WD drives. Would recommend highly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from better luck with WD Over the years I've used several brands of external hard drives for mostly photo back up. The WD has always been more reliable. as a matter of fact I've never had a WD hard drive fail. I just bought this 3tb to replace another brand that failed after a year which I paid a lot more for. I keep a bank of three on hand and switch them out and all of that paranoid stuff. The price at B&H was more than competitive so how could I not resist buying something more reliable at a cheaper price. The download speed seems the same as the unit that it replaced. I use this on a mac which only takes minutes to reformat.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for its dual-purpose function I purchased this external drive to (1) back up uncompressed CD-quality and high-resolution (24/96 PCM through DSD128) music files on my Windows 7 desktop's internal drive and (2) act as a music server source drive for an Ethernet-networked computer located in another part of the house. Installation was plug-and-play with the drive's nominal 3 TB (actually 2.72 TB) capacity fully available without the necessity to reconfigure or reformat the product. The drive's access speed is excellent--music stored on it that's sent across the network is reproduced at the second computer without any burps, stutter, or gaps during playback. Even working full tilt in this function, it's dead quiet in operation. I've not found any nits to pick with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would buy again if needed Best price per terabyte with Western Digital's reliability. It's used to backup multimedia. I have it formatted to Mac OS and can only use the usb 2.0 connection on a 2008 macbook. My only complaint is how, unlike the MyBook line (I own 2), this hard drive does not connect through my ac-powered usb 3.0 hub. It is possible that there's something wrong on my end, but I followed all the troubleshooting protocols to no avail. Even so, it's a small inconvenience for the price. I would recommend this to anyone who needs needs quality digital storage on a budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 3TB Elements External Hard Drive I use my 3TB external hard drive to back up both laptops. I have a lot of music on two laptops and a desktop, pictures, videos, and games. It is great because its quiet when it backs up files. Its convenient as well to my needs. The only thing that I can point out about this hard drive is that since its larger it has to remain plugged in to an outlet while the files are being backed up so that you don't loose any data. I do have a smaller external hard drive that I don't have to plug into an outlet but its just a small adjustment. Overall thus far I have enjoyed my product and B&H provides good service.

question

I just received my order for the 3Tb WD Elements External Desktop Hard Disk Drive from B&H and before taking the shrink wrap off I noticed the info on the box said it was preformatted for Windows 8, 7 and Vista, but did not mention XP. B&H info on its website included XP. My computer runs Windows XP. So before I take the shrink wrap off, I'd like to know will this Hard Drive will function okay connected to my XP running computer?
Asked by: Jerry S.
The drive will be compatible with Windows XP, however you will need to repartition the drive to use two partitions. The maximum size a single partition can be on Windows XP is about 2.2TB.

Can this be used to connect to a DISH DVR and transfer movies to it?
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes it can if the Sat. box supports USB. The movies can be stored on the drive but they cannot be connected to another device and played back...Only played back on the Sat. box it was originally connected to. Digital Licensing Laws prohibit it from being played in another receiver.
