Available for download, Slate Digital's Gates Bundle gives you two dynamics processors in one software package, both of which help you eliminate unwanted background noise or mic bleed between drum hits, vocal passages, and more. Use these plug-ins in your mixes any time you need to bring silence bleed quickly and intelligently.
Gate: Classic is tailored for a variety of instruments, giving you ratio, range, attack, release, and threshold parameters. You can also change the shape of the release curve. You'll note these shapes have a noticeable effect on how the sound decays to silence when the gate no longer detects a trigger input.
The plug-in also offers a Vocal mode which is tuned to vocal frequency ranges. It's particularly effective at detecting a vocalist's natural breathing, so that breaths don't trip off the gate by accident.
For your percussion instruments, use Gate: Drums, whose gate is activated by transients rather than volume levels. Transient Detection helps you to catch only the drum hits you want to use to trigger the gate. There is a Debleed section to enable dynamic filters, which can help you achieve a cleaner sounding drum tracks. To hear a particular drum when it's hit and ensure silence when the drum is left alone, use the Debleed section, which can help you cleanly isolate a drum hit without incurring artifacts or picking up sound from other drums.
These plug-ins operate within Slate Digital's VMR (Virtual Mix Rack) plug-in. When you want to use it in your DAW, simply instantiate the VMR plug-in, and you'll be able to access either Gate, as well as any other VMR plug-in you currently own.
This bundle is Mac and Windows compatible. It can operate in VST, AU, and AAX formats. An iLok 2 or 3 is required.
