Camtree G-51 Reviews

Almost perfect!

I'm really happy with this rig and it's functionality. Not as expensive or robust as others, but quality, functionality, versatility, and modularity are not sacrificed. The only reason I gave this a 4 star rating is because I purchased some additional parts to make trips using the G-51 more secure and put me at ease. Additional things I would like to see in a later kit (and also what I purchased): more rope versus just two, better door latches/clamps as the ones that come in the kit are kinda thick and not all that great for all vehicle types, and at least four 3/4 20 latch/rope rings to screw into the secure tripod mount. It'd also be cool to get perhaps a 75mm and 100mm bowl adapters for better tripod head leveling. Other than that, this rig is solid and there are many visual reviews that you can catch on YouTube or Vimeo that show off the quality and trust you can place into this rig. Glad I bought it and looking forward to the amazing content and stories this thing will have a hand in creating.

Simple, but works so far

Very simple and basic car mount. The safety ratchet straps that come with it are trash. One metal hook bent almost immediately and the other ratchet does not actually keep the rope tight. That said, if you use real ratchet straps, the mount works pretty well. The suction cups are great quality and the rig is very customizable. Get yourself a leveling head to go with it and you'll be all good.

Works well. Footage is a little shaky, but it’s secure and stable. Definitely worth the low cost, though I’d recommend RigWheels if you have a more pro production. This is for small budget setups with mirrorless/DSLR. This is also super easy to setup for solo shoots.

Camtree G-51 Gripper

The G-51 is very well packaged in its own carry case and comes with various leg lengths. The locking screws gave me some trouble in tightening enough to prevent movement/slippage. The unit allows great flexibility in positioning and the suction cups are very strong. I mounted my the camera on top of a vehicle and filmed at speeds up to 70 MPH but did use 2nd party tie-down straps to secure..... I was concerned about loosing a very expensive camera. In the end, all went well. A good piece of specialized equipment for the money

I bought this to use for obvious reasons, although I feel like I'd have preferred to get a more well-known unit. Having said that, it's quite functional. Mounted an FS5, with the top-handle, EVF, and kit-lens...and went for a leisurely 50MPH stroll. Footage was very usable. Takes a little bit of mechanicing to get a stable platform, but it'll certainly do the job. Might suggest using a little sturdier restraints, like some common ratcheting tie-downs, vs the OEM units. You can use it w/o a leveling base, with the included 3/8 and 1/4 mounting screws, but you have to pay careful attention to alignment. That's not a flaw (they tell you to use a leveling base), just an option. This thing is certainly worth considering, and is a good value:dollar return.

Sort of worked then it broke

Did a test run to grab a couple images and some b-roll to play with. Footage was far too shaky given I was on a gravel road. Photos worked but the shutter speed had to be so fast to avoid up and down shake I could not get the motion blur I desired for the shot. I recently got it back out to use on a commercial shoot as I need one shot from the hood of a car on pavement. Started putting it together thinking if I made it shorter I could make it more solid and the ball joint just broke in half when I tried to screw it down - looks like a lot of air bubbles were inside the metal.

Don't mix up the thumb screws!!!!!

Did a dry run setting up my new car mount (will be using it with an Insta360 Pro 2 for creating Google Street View content) and discovered there are TWO different thumb screw thread sizes provided that are almost the same: -20 to secure the spuds to the suction cups and M6-1.0 for all the ball heads. Neither have any distinctive markings and have identical handles. This is an avoidable industrial design mistake that is cheap to fix by either labeling the screws or Camtree just using -20 for everything... Not sure what the C hooks are good for (and the user's manual is no help) as there are no points on my car where they can hook, so highly recommend getting a set of door hook cargo tie downs, or trunk/hood tie downs. Positives: spare thumb screws are nice, the camera mounting hub is nicely machined, the lock-nuts on the ball joints are metal, and the case works (but wish you didn't need to tear down everything so much). As to using it with a 360 panoramic camera, the forged eye bolts provided are too bright and shiny, so will be replacing them with matte black eye bolts found at my local big-box hardware store.

Can you mount a DJI Ronin S gimbal to it?
Asked by: Alex
Yes, you can mount a DJI Ronin S gimbal to this. Years working on pro camera crews with superb grips taught me that when I hung a $500,000 Panaflex off a car to be driven by an unpredictable actor on Sunset Boulevard, at night, in the rain, you also want safety ropes or straps just in case the actual mount fails.

Yes, the G-51 can support the DJI RS 2 and the Blackmagic 6K Pro. We strongly recommend also using the DJI Ronin Expansion Base Kit BH #DJREBK.
