Nikon D3500 Overview

  • 1Description

Comprising the essentials needed to begin shooting, the Nikon D3500 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm and 70-300mm Lenses and Accessories Kit from B&H bundles the DX-format camera, standard zoom lens, and telephoto zoom lens with a memory card and a copy of Corel PaintShop Pro 2019 Ultimate editing software.

  • Nikon D3500 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm and 70-300mm Lenses

Compact, easy to use, and versatile are all traits of the Nikon D3500, which is designed to be as flexible and intuitive as possible, while still offering the imaging capabilities you expect from a DSLR. Utilizing a DX-format 24.2MP CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 image processor, the D3500 provides a native sensitivity range from ISO 100-25600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the sensor and processor combination also provides a 5 fps continuous shooting rate as well as Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps. The sensor's design also omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve greater sharpness and resolution from both photos and videos.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the D3500 also features SnapBridge, which utilizes Bluetooth connectivity, for wireless sharing of images to your mobile device, including automatic sharing of 2MP images between the camera and your mobile device. The lightweight camera body incorporates a 3.0" 921k-dot LCD screen for live view monitoring and image review and, catering to first-time DSLR owners, the D3500 also features a helpful Guide Mode to aid in achieving specific photographic looks or techniques, such as how to produce shallow depth of field imagery in a helpful, step-by-step manner. Ten different Special Effects are also available in-camera to creatively refine the look of both stills and movies.

    24.2MP DX-Format Sensor and EXPEED 4 Processor
The 24.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 4 processor work together to produce overall high image quality with notable detail, dynamic range, color accuracy, and low-light sensitivity to a native ISO 25600. Additionally, the sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to acquire the greatest sharpness and detail from subjects. The EXPEED 4 processor also enables a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including support for Full HD 1080p movie recording and a full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 5 fps.
    SnapBridge Bluetooth Connectivity
Supporting a wealth of sharing and tagging possibilities, the D3500 features built-in SnapBridge connectivity to permit seamless transferring of imagery to a mobile device. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology enables communication between the camera and a smart device, and allows for automatic 2MP image transfers as you shoot. SnapBridge requires a one-time setup, for up to five unique devices, and also works in conjunction with NIKON IMAGE SPACE for backing up files and sharing imagery.
    Multi-CAM 1000 Autofocus Sensor
Benefitting the high image quality is an apt AF system that employs 11 distinct AF points to quickly acquire focus in a range of lighting conditions from -1 to +19 EV.
    Full HD Movie Recording
Full HD 1920 x 1080p movie recording is supported in multiple frame rates up to 60 fps, as well as HD 720p, in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. During recording, full-time autofocus can be employed, with face-detection and subject-tracking capabilities, for ensured sharpness with a wide variety of subject types. Additionally, a built-in monaural microphone can be used to record high-quality sound during movie recording.
    Body Design
    • Redesigned body is more compact, lighter in weight, and has nearly all of the rear controls on the right-hand side of the grip for easier one-handed control.
    • Rear 3.0" 921k-dot LCD offers a large, bright means for live view shooting, menu navigation, or image playback.
    • Eye-level pentamirror optical viewfinder provides a natural means for composing stills.
    • Built-in pop-up flash can be used to provide additional illumination when working in low-light conditions. A hot shoe is also available for working with an optional external flash.
    • The included EN-EL14a lithium-ion battery provides approximately 1550 shots per charge.
    AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED Lenses
Included with the camera body is the standard zoom AF-P DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens, which provides a 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 27-82.5mm. Featuring an integrated pulse stepping motor, this lens exhibits exceptionally smooth, fast, and quiet autofocus performance to suit both stills and video recording. The optical design incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and a Super Integrated Coating is also featured to suppress lens flare and ghosting. Additionally, this lens also features Vibration Reduction image stabilization to minimize the appearance of camera shake when shooting handheld.

Also included with camera is the telephoto zoom AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED lens, which covers a 105-450mm equivalent zoom range. This lens incorporates one extra-low dispersion glass element into its optical design to reduce chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to provide greater clarity and color fidelity. A Super Integrated Coating is featured on this lens, too, to limit ghosting and flare when working in strong lighting conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nikon D3500 I previously owned a Nikon D3100 and was impressed with its ability to take clear pictures. I just purchased a New Nikon D3500 and must say this camera blows away the D3100 by miles. The clarity of photos is simply amazing. I took a hand held picture of a bee on a flower and was amazed to see white hairs on his head and almost translucent wings similar to a dragon fly. WOW !! This is National Geographic stuff. I couldn't be happier with this purchase . It is hands down the Best Camera I have ever owned in over 40 years of Nikon Photography. If you want a cutting edge amazing camera then this is the one for you. I haven't even touched on the added features such as Wi-fi or burst pictures or the new Effects features. This camera is destined to become a legend in Nikon cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for new or long time hobbyist ! I am a older hobbyist who wanted a light-weight camera that had the ability to capture great quality photographs. The D3500 is the finest camera in its class. The features of the camera are of a quality that allow a new or veteran photographer to capture very fine photos. I find the camera compares favorably with more expensive cameras of either Nikon or other brands. You can interchange all Nikon lenses and those of other manufacturers with this camera. The lens that comes with this camera is very good, and I think you will be pleased with the results from it. I would advise you to download the manual for the camera from the Nikon web cite. The manual will be invaluable to look up the many features you may be interested in.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great camera, but a downgrade from the D3400 This is a good camera, but beware that this is a cost reduced version of the D3400. Nikon removed features and relocated buttons in order to reduce cost. Most glaring is the removal of the programmable Function button allowing you to control various manual settings via the click wheel. Without this button you need to spend time going through the menus to change basic things, like ISO. They also moved IR control, and moved buttons to the right side so you cant do things with both your left and right hand (now right hand only). Its quite ridiculous the Function button was removed, but if it wasnt present on previous D3x00 cameras it probably wouldnt be as big a deal. The photo quality is amazing. If you just want to point and shoot in auto mode then you will have few issues. If you prefer manual control then, in my opinion, you should look for a D3400.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Neat little camera. Bought this hoping for a small and lightweight, go-anywhere, travel, daily carry, throw in any bag camera for when I can't be bothered with full-frame DSLRs and big zooms. And that's what I got. Haven't been using it long, obviously, but here's a few first impressions. Like all DSLRs it's got all sorts of weird and ignorable modes and programs that anyone who knows the difference between a shutter and an aperture won't ever want or need and just clutter up the controls. The paper guide thing provided in the box is next to useless. There's a much larger and more useful pdf manual available from Nikon, but you'll need to hunt it down on their website. Right now, there's no support for the D3500 in Adobe Camera RAW, but I expect that will be corrected soon. You might think Adobe and Nikon could collaborate to synchronise their releases, given how software dependant we all are these days, but apparently not. I love the light weight, small size, control positions and overall pleasant handling. You can do almost everything one-handed. Very quick and neat once you get past the usual new-camera muscle-memory hurdle. The viewinder is... adequate. If you're used to a two-control-wheel setup, this one will feel a little crippled. It pretty much asks to be left in A mode, then to use exposure compensation for adjustments from there. Manual is also quite usable (with the exposure compensation button enabling aperture control in manual mode). All workable, just not as immediate as separate wheels. ISO control, on the other hand, is a bit sad. Can't control ISO in the viewfinder. Have to lower the camera to look at the rear screen and use the 'i' button's display to change it. I'm resorting to auto-ISO, which, to be fair, seems to work pretty well, but it gets confusing quickly in manual exposure mode, and turning it off means going to a different menu.. and.. yeah, all a bit of a pitiful design, really. I guess Nikon don't intend people who care much about ISO to be a market for this one. But really, apart from the ISO mess, which I can live with, this is a very easy, responsive and pleasant to use camera. It even enables a back-button-focus control. Nice. Not much to say about the image quality other than it's really pretty marvellous. Much better than I was hoping for and a lot better than I'd expect from a camera this price. All the default settings are intended to give you generically nice looking jpegs straight out of the camera, which is fair enough. If you're planning on post-processing, you'll probably want to dial back some of the default sharpening and saturation and so on. It's all pretty tunable, once you decipher the menus. The supplied lens is equally small and tidy. The 35mm DX lens also suits it well. Bigger FX lenses function great but feel weirdly unbalanced. I can imagine getting very satisfactory results by putting a longer telephoto on this with a tripod if you ever need the extra reach. The supplied lens is surprisingly good for the price, as well. It's got this weird pointless locking feature. Not sure what that's about. Anyhow, I'm not one for pictures of brick walls, but the results look plenty sharp to me. Look out for very noticeable barrel distortion at the wide end, though, and occasional fringing (all fixable in post, once Adobe catches up). It's a slow one, of course. If you want to control dof, you'll need something like the 35mm DX. That's enough. Bottom line is this is a fantastic little combo and a steal for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect gifts or starter camera I bought 2 of these for my daughters for Christmas from B&H and they lit up like the Christmas tree. Great cameras for the price and with the crop sensor, the 18-55 is 27-83 which is a nice walk around lens. Id recommend this model for anyone looking to advance 2 or 3 steps above their cell phone camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great step into a new world Im a newbie photographer and this is my first interchange lens camera. I did alot of research and weighing my options and this Nikon seemed like the best bet for me. I read alot of reviews from folks like some of the others who have reviewed this camera that complain about the loss of a function button or the infared remote. Let me just say that is super nit picky commentary to have. This camera should appeal to new dslr buyers, not those going from a previous model... You really should upgrade to a higher tier camera if you already have a 3300 or 3400 and want new interchange lens camera. Let me just say to quickly change the ISO, which most seem to use that function button for, is right there on the first panel of the options button... Its not hard to change I dont get why people complain so much. Also snapbridge works just fine for remote shooting and doesnt require me to use anything other than my phone, which I have on me at all times anyway. This lens bundle has allowed a complete novice like me to easily learn the exposure triangle and use A, S, and M modes to take some cool pictures. I like the layout on the back and it offers nice dedicated and straight forward buttons on the right side. Ive mostly used the 70-300mm lens and I like it alot and have gotten some cool wildlife shots in The short time Ive had this camera. I picked up the 35mm f/1.8 dx lens as well which is a good buy to add. Its light, has nice battery life, takes really great pictures, feels great in my hands, and is a usedul tool to teach you photography (after watching lots of YouTube video and the b&h fstoppers video they include). From this newbi to you, I think its definitely worth a buy

would my old D90 compatible lenses (like Sigma 18-250 work with D3500?
Asked by: jonathan
As long as the lenses you own have a built-in autofocus motor (such as Sigma's Hypersonic Motor with HSM on the lens, or the Nikon Silent Wave Motor with AF-S on the lens, etc), then yes, the lenses would also be fully compatible for use on the Nikon D3500 DSLR camera. If the lens does not have a built-in autofocus motor, or if the lens has a built-in aperture ring, you may have to focus the lens manually.

Does Nikon D3500 work with Nikon ML-L3 wireless remote control?
Asked by: Alexandre
No, the ML-L3 is not compatible with the D3500. The D3500 can be triggered remotely using the camera's built-in Bluetooth and a compatible Android or iOS smart device that is running Nikon's free SnapBridge app.
