Peak Performance Super-Telephoto
Impressive reach and capable speed, the Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS is a refined super-telephoto characterized by its G Master optics, durable construction, and surprisingly lightweight design for increased shooting versatility. As a super-telephoto prime, this lens is at home with sports and wildlife subjects, and fast AF performance, apt OSS, and intuitive handling further round out the professional feature-set.
Innovative Optical Design
  • As part of Sony's esteemed G Master series, this lens is designed to achieve a balance of impressive resolution and sharpness along with distinctive and pleasing bokeh.
  • Bright f/4 maximum aperture enables working in difficult lighting conditions and also provides extremely shallow depth of field for isolating subjects from busy backgrounds.
  • Three fluorite elements and two extra-low dispersion element minimize axial and lateral chromatic aberrations, as well as color fringing, for high clarity and color accuracy.
  • Nano AR coating has been applied to interior lens surfaces to suppress reflections that cause flare and ghosting.
  • G Master optical design includes one large-diameter XA (Extreme Aspherical) element to reduce spherical aberrations and achieve for high sharpness, and this design, along with a rounded 11-blade diaphragm, also contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.
Fast Focusing and Reliable OSS
  • XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motor System quietly and quickly focuses on fast-moving subjects while shooting at high speeds.
  • High-precision XD motor system is also complemented by updated AF algorithms for improved responsiveness and quieter operation, further benefitting sports and wildlife applications.
  • Power Focus functionality for smooth focus during video recording.
  • Full-time DMF supports manually adjusting focus simply by turning the focusing ring, regardless of the focusing mode, and Linear Response MF provides a natural and responsive focus feeling for more precise manual control.
  • Focus range limiter switch and preset focus functions increase focusing efficiency either within a certain constrained range or immediately to a specified focusing point.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake to better enable making sharp shots when working handheld.
  • When used on a camera body featuring in-body image stabilization, 5-axis stabilization is available for more robust support.
  • Three difference stabilization modes can be used depending on the shooting situation: Mode 1 for general shooting, Mode 2 for panning shooting, and Mode 3 prioritizes accurate framing when photographing and tracking fast and erratically moving subjects.
Professional Durability and Intuitive Handling
  • Weather-sealed construction to protect against dust, dirt, and moisture.
  • Fluorine-coated front element resists dirt and fingerprints and is also easier to clean.
  • Weighing just 6.7 lb, this lens is notably portable for a 600mm f/4 super-telephoto. The weight of the lens is also distributed toward the back, where it would sit over a monopod, making tracking subjects and panning easier.
  • In addition to the weight-saving use of fluorite elements in the optical design, the external barrel design makes extensive use of magnesium alloy to contribute to the lightweight-yet-durable construction.
  • Increased mount strength for ensured rigidity that will withstand professional use.
  • Function ring near the front of the lens can be set to control a preset focus position or can be assigned to power focus or other selectable features via an in-camera menu.
  • Four separate focus hold buttons can be customized to adjust or activate a variety of settings, such as Eye AF.
  • The rear of the lens features a drop-in filter slot that accepts 40.5mm round filters.
  • Rotating tripod collar features ball bearings for smooth movements along with detents at each 90° position for intuitive handling. These clicks can also be deactivated.
  • As an additional weight-saving element, the included lens hood is made from carbon fiber.
  • Compatible with optional FE 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters.

Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS Reviews

All things considered this is an amazing lens. However, the price is hard to swallow. I recently had a chance to use the lesser priced 200-600 and side by side images on a Sony A1 I could hardly tell the difference. Of course bokeh is much better and the extra stop of light helps. For 90% of my "wildlife photography" I don't need the extra benefit of one stop of light and bokeh.

You can handhold that thing?

Nobody who spends the amount of money this lens costs, not even a curmudgeon reviewer like myself (well, there may be that odd one or two folks who gives it four stars), will give it less than 5 stars. Yes, there's a few downsides to be aware of: - It's heavy (but still hand-holdable for short periods) - No arca-swiss mount on the lens foot (get either the kirk or rrs lens foot) - The min-focusing distance is 15 feet out :-( For those who want the ultimate long tele for their Sony cameras, it's either this or the Sony 400/2.8. Positives: - Sharp - Bright - Fast - Bokehlicous - Happily takes 1.4 and 2.0 teleconverters (slight degradation with the 2x) - Balance is towards the camera body making it easier to handhold and pan Compared to the Sony 200-600: - 1.5x heavier and also larger - 2.5x brighter - 6x more expensive - not a zoom - not susceptible to the purple fringing of the 200-600 - works better with the teleconverters Kit it up, my personal choices are: - skin: alphagvrd vinyl skin - hood and cover: zemlin - foot: kirk (and rrs) both made in the usa - bag: (still looking) Also comes with: - hard case (honey, I bought a suitcase) - straps - lens hood and cover (don't lose them or $1000 for OEM replacement) - lens caps

Absolutely love this lens. Although a bit heavier than the 200-600 I have been using, it is well worth it. I can hand carry it for quite a while (I am a very active senior female). Owning a 600mm prime has been on my bucket list for many years. When B&H notified me that it was in stock, I jumped on it. Glad that I did because they immediately sold out. It is great in low light. With the 200-600, I had to crank up the ISO in low light. Plus, it locks on to bif so much faster. If you are considering it, I say go for it!!!

I have been fortunate to have owned the Nikon 600mm f 4 lens as well as the Nikon 500mm f4 lens. This Sony 600mm f4 is the best long lens because of its acuity and contrast along with the steady shot feature which surpasses anything that Nikon had

Wide open this lens is sharp edge to edge. It's light and built like a tank. The only downside is of course the hefty price tag. Will it take $13k photos? No. But what it does it does it well. Not to me mention it's a head turner while out on public.

Fantastic lens!

Lock onto birds and animals eyes even faster than the 200-600 Sony lens. Super sharp.

My Dream Come True

As a passionate wildlife/bird photographer for over 40 years I can honestly say that I never thought I'd get to own the BEST 600mm lens ever made. As a budget bird photographer I took up digiscoping to get the focal lengths generated by the big primes and assumed that my journey would end there. But, my DW gave me permission to buy the lens when it became available (thank you, B&H!), and it is everything and more. I thought the 200-600mm lens was sharp, but this thing is crazy sharp! And hand-holdable! Autofocus is fast, but I will say that it tends to lag on up close subjects (15'), but it is every bit as fast as my old 300/2.8 Nikkor. Image resolution is outstanding, and coupled w/ the Sony a1 it is the ultimate package for birds and wildlife. Thank you, B&H for making this kid's dream come true!

The Sony FE 600mm f/4 GM OSS Lens preforms very well for Photo as well as Video. Though when using for video it is suggested that one uses a tripod to keep the shutter speed down.

Depending on the camera that you mount it on and what you are trying to do, this lens is incredibly well suited for it. For recording video of birds in flight, sports, wildlife, this lens would be an absolutely perfect option with how fast it focuses, paired with the stabilization system, making it an absolutely ideal lens.

How do you transport this lens and Sony A1 as a airline carry-on? What bag/brand/model do you use to meet airline measurement limits?
Asked by: Craig
The average overhead carry-on size for the USA is 22x14x9 inches, but you should always double check what the specific airline's rules are. This will fit in the Pelican 1510 hard case ( https://bhpho.to/3tVOZFq ). The one in the link with the foam would be the best option for you. You should have enough space for the Sony A1 as well as a couple accessories.

Mostly any gimbal head will work with this lens. The best, most popular gimbal is the Wimberley WH200 gimbal. The qr plate that they recommend for the Sony 60mmm is the P35 plate or the AP-616 replacement foot.
