I have been a Canon user all my professional career but recently switched to Sony and boy, this lens is as sharp if not sharper than my previous Canon 600f/4II.
Costly but worth every penny

The lens is truly a professional lens - if you have a limited budget the 200-600 Sony is great. I recently switched from Nikon to Sony and this lens my go-to for wildlife photography.

I recently purchased the Sony FE 600mm f/4 and I am delighted!
The minimal weight of this lens was very surprising as I had lugged my Nikon 600 for years (I am now 77 years young) and needed less weight. Then, to pick up this lens, it almost hit the ceiling since I was expecting the typical heavyweight. The build quality is freakingly good. I was photographing birds during a very misty day that turned to snow. A little soft towel and all was well again just as I had anticipated for a quality Sony lens. Another surprise was the storage and transport case. In the past, I seemed to get the shipping container from hell (not how it left B&H). The Sony lens case held up to almost any abuse. I cannot say enough good things about the ability to handhold this lens while taking movies or stills of birds on the wing. Thanks, Sony, you have impressed me once again. I waited for three months for this lens. The B&H representatives told me to be patient and continue to wait for this gem. They were right on the money.

If you bought it you know what you bought and why you bought it. And if you're thinking about buying it, yes, it's everything people say it is and more. And yeah, the price tag is nuts. But so is the lens. Best thing I ever purchased.
Beyond my expectations.

This lens is tack sharp, and the dual linear motors make for super fast autofocus. Lens is much lighter and more balanced than any other 600mm I have ever worked with. These benefits are what makes the cost of this lens justifiable for me. I shoot 90% of my images hand held and I am shooting erratic fast moving subjects. This lens allows me to get the job done, and not get beat up in the process. For me - this lens is a dream come true.
Terrific!!!

Expensive, but comparably priced to other brands.
Great reach. Lightweight and beautiful bokeh.
Perfect for sports and wildlife. Two caveats: 1) Study your focus modes. Some Sony newcomers use the wrong AF mode and blame the lens when the photos are soft or out of focus. 2) If you will be hiking and shooting on trails and close quarters, consider the Sony 200-600G.
Yes, it is.

When you see a lens priced so high as this one, you have to wonder if any lens can be worth that much money. And I did wonder-especially because I had already upgraded to the Sony 200-600mm, which is sharper than the Olympus 300mm that I had been very happy with for years. (I upgraded primarily because of the camera, not the lens.) Eventually I decided to take the plunge. Money doesn't grow on trees around here, so I sold the Miata to almost cover the cost of the lens. Was it worth the trade? You betcha. When I compare shots of soccer players taken with the 200-600 against shots of the same players taken with the 600mm under the same lighting (though different days), there is no question that the 600mm is a much better lens. There is a presence to the image that amounts to much more than the sum of better sharpness, plus better color, plus better bokeh. This lens is a thing of beauty. And isn't that why we take pictures in the first place?
