Super-Telephoto Versatility
Spanning a versatile telephoto range, the FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS from Sony is a flexible zoom perfectly suited for nature, wildlife, and sports applications. Its long reach pairs with a modest maximum aperture range to render to a relatively lightweight and portable design and, as a G series lens, optical quality, focus speed, and attention to handling details are also priorities of this well-rounded super-tele zoom.
Long-Reaching, Stabilized Zoom
  • Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this super-telephoto can also be used on APS-C models to achieve an equivalent 300-900mm focal length range.
  • Maximum aperture range of f/5.6-6.3 helps minimize size and weight while providing excellent performance in a variety of applications.
  • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds.
  • OSS has three dedicated modes, including panning and viewfinder stabilization priority settings, and can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
  • Internal zoom design limits the overall length of the lens while zooming for more intuitive and comfortable handling.
  • Compatible with optional 1.4x and 2x FE teleconverters for further increasing the lens's reach.
G Lens Series
  • Five extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to control chromatic aberrations and reduce color fringing for increased clarity and color fidelity.
  • One aspherical element is placed at the rear of the optical design and reduces distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce a high degree of sharpness and accurate rendering.
  • A Nano AR Coating has been applied to minimize surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • A rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Fast and Precise Autofocus
  • Direct Drive Super Sonic wave Motor (DDSSM) AF system provides quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that suits both stills and video applications.
  • Linear Response manual focus control offers more natural handling and an AF/MF switch is located on the lens barrel for tactile control over this setting.
  • Three customizable focus hold buttons are present on the lens barrel for intuitive tactile control and rapid access to select settings.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 7.9', along with a maximum magnification of 0.2x, benefits portraiture and head shots.
  • Focus range limiter and focus hold controls offer more intuitive handling and faster performance when photographing moving subjects.
Professional, Durable Design
  • Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
  • The front lens element features a fluorine coating to protect against smudges and dust from adhering to the glass surface.
  • Removable rotating tripod mount permits quick switching from horizontal to vertical shooting orientations.

Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Reviews

A Great Flexible Lens

I purchased this lens to go along with my Sony 70-200 and Sony 100-400 and extenders which I already own. Don't expect it to be as good as the Sony 600 f4 which costs a much as 6x the price of the this lens. It is good enough for me as I don't shoot nature subjects requiring the use of a big telephoto often enough to justify the purchase of the high end 600 mm telephoto. So far its performance has more than adequate shooting burrowing owls. It is very sharp a 600mm. This works for me as I got the additional reach needed especially when shooting cropped frame with 1.4X extender. I primarily use the A7R4/A7R5 with this lens

I looked at the other zoom lenses in this range, but in the end I chose the Sony 200-600 mainly because of internal zooming. I also purchased an RRS Arca-Swiss compatible replacement foot. What can I say? This lens is the standard to which others are compared for a reason - great image quality! When you are shooting birds or wildlife at a distance, that's what really matters when you must crop. I already had the Sony 1.4x teleconverter - another reason to choose the Sony lens for the Sony system. With this lens and teleconverter I have excellent image quality up to 840mm - 1260mm equivalent if I use APS-C mode. That's a lot if versatility with excellent results. I definitely think the higher price is worth it considering those results.

This is an amazingly fast and sharp lens

I almost decided to get the 100-400mm lens, but in the end opted for this one, and so glad I did. I've never had a business reason to get a lens with a focal length over 200mm, recently I have tho. I've only used it for a day so far, but the creative possibilities with this lens that has been fast and sharp, is amazing. I do need to upgrade my main tripod though to a different plate and more secure lockings, as my current manfrotto has a bit too much movement for this massive lens when I'm doing panoramas. No complaints with the lens itself.

I purchased the Sony to replace my Sigma 150-600 dg dn sport. The Sigma is a good lens. When it came to action the sigma could not keep up. The Sony is so much better at tracking birds. The auto focus is superior to the Sigma. I love the internal zoom. This is a great lens for Sony users.

Best Telephoto for the Price

I rented this lens (and an A74 body) before purchasing both. I have used it for almost one year. It is amazingly sharp, well built, and has a smooth internal zoom with a short throw from 200 to 600. Since I also use (and love) Nikon D850, I recently got the Nikon AF-S 200-500 as a potential replacement (to get to a one camera setup). I had to send it back after testing both because the Sony was sharper in every situation both at large and small apertures. The only downside to this lens is that it does not have a larger aperture like f4, but of course that would make it ridiculously heavy and expensive. If you want a tack sharp lens with a smooth feel at a reasonable price, you can't go wrong with this one. I also bought the 1.4x teleconverter which seems to work well (extending the range to 840mm). Unfortunately, neither Sony nor Canon nor Nikon make their tripod feet Arca-Swiss compatible, so I had to buy a Really Right Stuff replacement foot.

Big bang for the buck

I've used this lens with both the A1 and A9II. Excellent results shooting sports, wildlife, and people. Sample images speak for theirselves. Now I need either the 400 2.8 or the 600 4. Decision time..........

Returned It

Was between the 200-600 and the 100-400 GM. Really wanted the reach of the 200-600 so I ordered it. Once I got it, I knew instantly I had made the wrong choice (for me). The lens feels well built, but the size of this thing just was not a lens I would see myself taking out much. Image quality seemed good. Just too big for me. Returned it and got the 100-400 GM. Much better size, very close in size to my 70-200 GM. Yes, ill be losing the reach but probably will get the 1.4 convertor at some point. B&H Returns easy as always!

Can this lens be used on an A77 with adapter
Asked by: Tommy
As long as the Adapter is an E-Mount to whatever mount you need. The 200-600mm Lens is part of the E-Mount Family. So when looking for an adapter, keep an eye out for those.

How does this lens need to be stored? lying flat, or standing up?
Asked by: Richard
You can store the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens laying flat or standing up. As long as the lens is stored securely in a padded storage case, it should be fine. You could consider storing it with a 95mm clear filter attached, for added impact protection. You could also store it inside of a hard, crushproof case (from Pelican or Nanuk) with foam interior.

I would recommend the B+W High-Transmission MRC-Nano Master Circular Polarizer Filter (95mm), B&H # BWCPHTM95, or the NiSi 95mm Pro Circular Polarizer Filter, B&H # NIRCPL95, as good circular polarizer filter options compatible for use on the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens.

Gordon's response to the question about the Sony ...

Gordon's response to the question about the Sony 200-600 G with 1.4 converter indicates that the lens on an A7Riii doesn't track moving birds well because the aperture shifts to f9. Is this a problem in the A7Riv as well?
Asked by: Mark
Most likely ou will have auto focusing issues. Since the birds are far, most likely the lens will be on infinite so try setting the camera in manual focus.
