Just finished my first shoot, photographing birds and really like this lens. The weight is very good for handheld use and the sharpness is as good as my 100-400 G master
Brilliant as espected

This is a awesome lens.I have a nikon 200/500 f5.6 and like it but this sony lens is a lot better and locks on super fast.As far as being heavy its not that bad.On the a7iv its flawless.

It's a heavy lens and I recommend using a tripod.

I was using a Nikon 500 f5.6PF lens and Nikon 70-200 f2.8 lens (with 1.4x teleconverter) for wildlife. However, I found carrying two setups to be cumbersome, so I rented the Sony 200-600 and A74 body. I was blown away by how sharp the lens is, even at 600mm and enlarged to actual pixels. I bought one from BH and put my Nikon 500PF (and D500) up for sale. While I still use my Nikon 70-200 (and shorter lenses) for scenics on a D850, I now have a one camera solution for wildlife. The stabilization works great (both in lens and in camera) and I use it mostly handheld. The price is quite reasonable for the sharpness and build quality. Unfortunately, my camera body (A74) had one of the SD slots break after only a month so it is currently out for warranty repair, but the lens itself is just about perfect. The only negative is the modest aperture, but if you want a larger aperture in this focal length you have to pay a fortune and carry a lot more weight and give up the versatility of a zoom. I am willing to live with the aperture considering what this lens delivers.
The lens I was looking for.

I initially passed on this lens because of reviews that said it was too large and heavy to travel with. After watching a Mark Smith review I purchased it. The quality of the wildlife images are what I have been looking for. I was shooting with the 100-400, often with a 1.4 TC, simply because getting close to wild animals if often hard. The advantages of this lens are multiple. One, you do not have to use a tele-converter. Two, it is an internal telephoto, and once balanced stays balanced. Three, the zoom and manual focus are smoother. Four, the images of birds at distance are noticeably better. Much better. Overall, I feel I can get the photos I was coveting. That is the whole point of photography. I pair it with an a7R IV, and my only regret is not having an adequate autofocus for flying birds. Thank you Mark Smith for convincing me to purchase this lens.

A bit on the heavy side if you not used to bigger zooms. Focus is super fast on the a7iv. Can't complain!
