Wooden Camera 270000 Overview

The Director's Monitor Cage v3 from Wooden Camera accepts virtually any LCD on-camera monitor up to 9", allowing it to be securely held and carried by a director or anyone who needs to have a personal monitor during a shoot. Featuring dual carbon fiber handgrips, aluminum rods, a padded neck strap, and a swing-away design for easy access to the back, this cage makes carrying a small monitor both simple and comfortable.

The cage is based on a universal plate system that mounts your monitor using 1/4"-20 mounting points on the side, top, or bottom of your monitor. In addition to holding your monitor, the cage allows for the mounting of a separately available V-mount or Gold mount plate for battery power, and it also leaves plenty of room for wireless equipment, so you can remain untethered on set.

This is the third version of the Wooden Camera Director's Monitor Cage, which features mounting capability for the Convergent Design Odyssey or Apollo monitor/recorder and comes with a collapsible sun hood. When mounted in the cage, access to your monitor's front panel controls remain unimpeded. A built-in Baby pin receiver makes for easy mounting onto a C-stand.

Overall lackluster

Nice kit, but over priced for what it is. The lack of flexibility with mounting options on the back plate is a problem. This is clearly designed for use with only teradek and smallHD products. It would be nice if the back swing out plate has a variety of mounting holes. The way the strap connects is not amazing either. But gets the job done.

Baby Pin Receiver not tight enough even with screw

It's solid except the Baby Pin receiver is so loose even when tightening the screw. The monitor just bounces around left and right vs. staying up straight.

Not a great product

This cage is rather underwhelming for my Cine7. It's a one fits many kind of cage, but it's a joke with the Cine7. There's a single mount point between monitor and cage, which is made via a non-locking plate. The result is the monitor isn't solid in the cage. Also, the top and bottom bar are behind the glass, so there's no screen protection? The overall build is fine, but nothing to write home about. Dislike the handle assembly, and out of the box the shade didn't work because one of the snaps was damaged by being over tightened. Regrettable purchase. Can not recommend.

This monitor cage is very handy on set. It's lightweight and has a lot of options. A must for filmmakers.

Definitely not worth the pricetag

I am not impressed with this cage, especially for the price it's at. I like that a lot of pieces were included, that shows that Wooden thought about that. However the material is aluminum, which is great for weight, but overall feels very cheap. I would've expected something that felt more rugged for this cost. My biggest issue when actually using the cage is that the tightening thumbscrews for the monitor handled must be bolted Very tight to hold the handles securely to the rods. even then, they sometimes move. I had to put a thin piece of tape on the rod so there was enough grip for the handle.

NOT GOOD

I cant believe this is the industry standard. For my cine7, there's a single mount point and the frame doesn't protect at all. Most egregious, with a Goldmount plate ON the monitor you cant use the mounting spud. Oh... and the sunshade is only has top snaps meaning it's floppy (aka junky). As an added bonus, one of my snaps came crushed so I cant mount it properly if I wanted to. This is one of the few regret purchases I've made. For the cine7, I'd strongly recommend the SmallHD handles.

Challenging to use other branded monitors/power plates

Wooden Camera goes above and beyond to make it incredibly challenging to integrate other brands with their accessories. While they may make good products, so do other companies. Production companies may not want to entirely shift everything they own to WC just to have a functional rig. I've had my eye on this for awhile, picked it up on a sale since reviews said it wasn't worth the original price. Well after owning for a few days i'd have to agree. The build quality is okay- the concept of carbon fiber is nice but overall it just feels cheap. I wish the swing away base plate had more secure locking points, twisting on the rail mounts is a bit annoying and you sometimes don't have it as secure as it could be A sliding quick release option would have been ideal here. I also don't love the stand mount that is attached. I know sometimes my clients will want to mount the monitor on the stand and as of now it feels a bit cheap and could use more secure mounting placement. I found mounting any monitor and v mount power plate that wasn't made by Small HD or WC to be more complicated than it should. Not surprising since this is something that's always pushed me away from WC products. Regardless I got this rig to work with gear previously purchased, it just took some time and thinking a bit outside of the box. Overall it was worth the $210 I paid, I know my clients will enjoy it- but i'm not sure for how long with travel and the volume of productions we will be using this on.
