Bundled together for B&H for your convenience, the Zoom H5 Podcasting Kit provides essential elements for recording podcasts—particularly, podcasts that take remote phone calls as guests.

The included Zoom H5 is a venerated industry-standard recorder for podcasts, and the included Samson Q2U is a handheld dynamic microphone capable of capturing quality vocals. Plug the Q2U into channel one of the H5 with the provided XLR cable. Next, plug the provided headphones into the H5's 3.5mm headphone-output jack, and you're ready to start podcasting.

But the Samson Q2U has a trick up its sleeve: A USB port that works simultaneously with the XLR output. Why does this matter? For recording phone calls over Skype and other VOIP software. Often, recording a call is challenging for the solo podcaster; guests sometimes hear echoes of their own voices due to how you're recording, and that's very disorienting.

Here's how you solve that problem with this kit: Keep the Q2U plugged into the Zoom with the XLR cable. Next, route the mic to your computer with the provided USB cable. Setup your VOIP software to receive audio from your mic (this changes depending on the computer and the operating system). Now, use the included 3.5mm cable to plug your computer's headphone output into the 3.5mm line input on the Zoom H5.

Set up the H5 to record audio from your XLR mic and the line input, and you're good to go. You'll capture your mic and your guest's phone call on two separate tracks, and your guests won't hear themselves echoing on their own line.

Zoom H5 4-Input / 4-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Interchangeable X/Y Mic Capsule

Ideal for documentaries, podcasting, audio for video, and professional sound design, the Zoom H5 portable handheld recorder lets you quickly record up to four input signals regardless of your audio experience. With a swappable stereo microphone capsule, versatile 2-channel inputs, and up to 4-track recording, the H5 is both user-friendly and easily expandable.

Like other H-Series Handy recorders such as the H4n Pro and H6, you can hold it in your hand, attach it to a mic stand or tripod, or mount it to a camera (shoe mount available separately); the H5 packs an impressive array of features into a rugged, rubberized body that's more than ready to meet the varied demands of musicians, videographers, sound designers, content creators, and news shooters.

From the plentiful battery life to the powerful audio processing functions, the H5 is well equipped to handle anything from tracking live performances and podcasts to recording interviews, dialogue, and sound effects. It can supply phantom or plug-in power for condenser mics, or accept direct connections from synths, keyboards, drum machines, or +4 dB line-level mixers. No matter the source, selectable auto-recording and pre-recording ensure that you'll never miss the start of a take, and stereo safety track recording provides duplicate tracks at a lower level to avoid distortion.

Fast, User-Friendly Operability

The H5's front panel is ergonomically arranged with its most essential and commonly used controls—transport buttons for record, play/pause, stop, back, and forward operations, individual record-arm buttons that double as mute switches during playback, and large gain knobs. For added safety, a hold switch disables all front-panel buttons to prevent accidental operation during recording. Day or night, view vital information such as audio levels, recording time, battery status, and more on the large, monochrome backlit LCD.

Instant Access to Gain Adjustments

Each H5 input has its own dedicated gain control knob, located beneath a protective bar that prevents accidental movement during handling. There's no track selection or button pressing required to optimize your recording levels; just turn the dials (clearly labeled from 0 to 10) anytime you need to adjust the gain. If your XLR-1/4" input source is so loud that you need even less gain than the preamps provide at the "0" setting, use the menu system to activate the -20 dB pad (selectable per input).

Interchangeable Stereo Microphone Capsule

Leave your external mics at home and travel light. The H5 is outfitted with Zoom's XYH-5 interchangeable stereo microphone that provides clear, phase-accurate capture in a classic 90° X/Y configuration for a tight stereo image. The matched unidirectional condensers are housed within a specially designed shockmount that employs rugged external mic wires and rubberized material to minimize vibration and handling noise. With nothing more than the H5, you're set to record speech, practice sessions, concerts, or ambient and environmental sounds, even ear-rattling ones up to 140 dB!

Supports Interchangeable Zoom Mic Capsules

The Zoom mic capsule input on the H5 accommodates Zoom's line of separately available interchangeable capsules, which can be swapped out as easily as the lenses of a camera. With mid-side, X/Y, and shotgun mic capsules to choose from, you can be ready to record music, dialog, or sound effects without carting an external microphone setup. Opt for the EXH-6 combo input capsule to accept two additional mic/line signals via XLR-1/4" jacks.

2-Channel Microphone/Line Inputs

Equipped with two XLR-1/4" combo inputs and a 3.5mm stereo mini-jack input, the H5 can accommodate condenser microphones, +4 dB balanced line-level sources, or signals from unbalanced instruments with active electronics. Turn on 12, 24, or 48 VDC phantom power to the XLR jacks, or 2.5V plug-in power to the mini jack. Whether you plan on recording studio condenser mics, a stereo feed from a mixer or wireless receiver, or a lavalier mic for an interview, the H5's preamps (identical to those found in the H6) are ready to deliver low-noise (-120 dB EIN) performance.

If you happen to setup external microphones in a mid-side configuration, the integrated MS decoder allows adjustment to the perceived width of the stereo image, which is beneficial for sound design, broadcasting, or general stereo-to-mono compatibility.

Record up to 4 Channels Live or Overdub Layers

The H5 boasts multiple recording modes, and is capable of up to 24-bit / 96 kHz resolution. Record in stereo from the X/Y mic capsule or input jacks, or use Multi File mode to simultaneously record the X/Y mic and two external sources (great for getting the room sound and a stereo feed from a mixer). Alternatively, Multi File mode can be utilized for overdubbing in case layers of instruments need to be added after an initial recording. The H5's internal mixdown function lets you adjust levels and pans as you blend four tracks down to stereo.

SD Card Recording and Audio Interface Functionality

Maximize portability by recording directly to an SD card (up to 2GB capacity) or SDHC card (up to 32GB capacity). A 2GB SDHC card will yield approximately three hours of 16-bit / 44.1 kHz stereo recording time using the BWF-compliant WAV format for uncompressed audio quality and industry-standard file compatibility. Note that media cards are available separately, and larger capacity cards will increase startup times.

Alternatively, use the H5 as a 4-in/2-out USB 2.0 audio interface at up to 24-bit / 48 kHz. For audio interface operation with an iPad (Apple Camera Connection Kit required and available separately), select USB Stereo mode, which offers two channels in and out at up to 16-bit / 48 kHz. The USB port also enables fast file transfer and firmware updates.

3.5mm Outputs for Simultaneous Hookup to a Camera and Headphones

The H5 boasts 3.5mm line and headphone mini-jack outputs for simultaneously feeding your camera/DSLR and a pair of headphones. In addition to the dedicated side-panel headphone volume control, the level of the line output can be adjusted via the menu, allowing you to optimize the signal level being sent to your camera without the need for an attenuator cable. For quick playback reference, a built-in monophonic speaker is also provided.

Powered via AA Batteries or AC Adapter

Power the H5 via two included AA batteries, or plug it into a wall outlet with an AD-17 AC adapter (available separately). Alkaline batteries can keep the H5 running for up to 15 hours of continuous 16-bit / 44.1 kHz recording using the built-in X/Y mic. When using the H5 in the stereo USB audio interface mode, USB bus powering is possible.

Rugged and Portable, Handheld or Mounted

The rubberized, ergonomic body lends itself naturally to handheld use. Should you need to mount it on a mic stand or tripod, a threaded hole on the back of the H5 obviates the need for stand adapters. Obtain a hot shoe adapter (available separately) to attach the H5 directly to a DSLR.

Signal Processing Adds Sonic Polish

The H5's onboard effects allow you to add polish to your recordings. Compression and limiting compensate for fluctuations in input level, while a low-cut filter helps eliminate wind noise, blowing, and other kinds of low-frequency rumble. Normalize files for maximum gain, split them into smaller chunks, and even insert up to 99 marks per recording.

There's an onboard metronome and tuner, and you can loop playback and adjust pitch and speed independently, making the H5 an ideal tool for phrase training.

Special Recording Functions

The H5 offers selectable recording functions designed to prevent you from accidentally missing the start of a performance. By keeping the previous two seconds of audio whenever you press the record button, the pre-record option ensures that you'll never cut off the beginning of a great take. Auto-record can automatically start recording when a user-set sound level is detected, making it great for voice-activated recording.

Backup record enables the H5 to automatically record a duplicate set of stereo tracks with 12 dB less input gain. Even if your original track is distorted, chances are the backup version will be fine!

Supports External Remote Control

Use the RCH-5 remote (available separately) to control the transport, arm tracks, and adjust volume at a distance while eliminating handling noise.

Includes Audio Software

The H5 comes with free download licenses for Steinberg's Cubase LE music production software and WaveLab LE audio editing software, representing a complete audio production toolkit.

Samson Q2U Recording & Podcasting Pack (Silver)

If you need one mic to handle anything from lead vocals on the stage to podcast recording without the cumbersome audio interface, the Samson Q2U will come in handy, doing so in an all-inclusive package at a cost-effective price. Styled in here in silver, the Q2U consists of a handheld dynamic microphone, a desktop tripod mic stand (with extension tube), a mic clip, a foam windscreen, a USB cable for digital recording, and an XLR cable for analog connections.

You probably see the potential: if you want to travel to the gig with your own microphone, the Q2U will let you do that, plugging into the house PA's XLR input without fuss. If you want to take the mic to a buddy's house for a conversational podcast, again, this is all possible with the Q2U. And finally, whenever you want to rant on your own a la Bill Burr or Mark Maron, setting up your podcast is as easy as plugging the mic into your computer over USB.

Fits Your Needs

The Q2U features both XLR and USB outputs that enable flexible digital recording to any Mac- or Windows-based computer workstation, while simultaneously connected to any analog mixer, preamplifier or PA system.

Handheld Form Factor

This solidly constructed mic is designed to be held in your hand, though it can also be mounted on a stand—such as the one included with the mic. Because of its design, the mic lends itself to comedy shows and comedy podcasts, though it'll work for just about any vocal-centric purpose.

Cardioid Polar Pattern for Stage & Home Use

The microphone makes use of a directional cardioid polar pattern to minimize off-axis sound. This polar pattern naturally, yet effectively tamps down room tone and focuses the audio capture on what's directly in front of the mic. That's why it's equally effective on the stage and in the home-studio.

Built-In 3.5mm Headphone Jack

The mic offers a headphone jack for monitoring. Just plug a pair of headphones into the Q2U's 3.5mm jack, and you'll be able to listen to your broadcast-quality audio in all its glory.

Easy-to-Use Controls, Minimal Powering Required

The mic offers a simple on/off switch for the XLR output. This acts as a mute, which can come in handy live. This switch has absolutely no bearing on powering the mic—in fact, as this is a dynamic microphone, it requires no power to run when used in the analog domain. When you're plugged into a digital device, such as a computer, the mic will draw power from the computer to operate the digital interface.

Broadcast-Quality Audio Capture

The mic records audio at 16-bit / 48 kHz, giving you the broadcast standard for media playback. It's also worth noting that it can simultaneously record digital audio over USB and route analog audio over its XLR connection, so you can effectively mirror its output if you so choose.

Driverless Setup

The Q2U requires absolutely no drivers to run out of the box. Just plug it in to your computer and you should be good to go.

Included Hardware

In addition to the mic, the Q2U includes a desktop tripod stand with extension tube, a mic clip, a foam windscreen, a USB cable, and an XLR mic cable, giving you almost everything you need to get started.

Polsen HPC-A30-MK2 Closed-Back Studio Monitor Headphones

The HPC-A30-MK2 Closed-Back Studio Monitor Headphones from Polsen offer a solution for experiencing rich and natural sound when listening to music through a mobile device or monitoring a podcast on your computer. These headphones can also be used for DJ work, thanks to the swiveling earcups that let you monitor audio while keeping one ear free.

The HPC-A30-MK2's over-ear design isolates the sound and prevents leakage for optimum listening conditions in loud environments, such as a club or on the go. The 10' cable also gives you the freedom to move around while working and terminates in a 1/8" TRS stereo plug, which is compatible with most mobile devices and computers. In addition, a stereo 1/4" adapter is included to plug into a stereo or mixing board.

Mobile

The HPC-A30-MK2 headphones deliver a rich sound for listening to audio on a mobile device. Whether you're listening on a smartphone, an iPod, or a tablet, these headphones deliver detailed sound even in noisy environments.

Over-Ear Design

The over-ear design isolates sound in loud environments and prevents leakage for optimum listening conditions. This design is good for listening to music on a busy street, and for DJs who need to monitor their audio in a noisy club.

DJ Applications

The headphones are suitable for DJ applications and include a tuned bass response for low-end clarity. The pivoting earcups are ideal for one-ear or on-the-shoulder monitoring. A padded headband offers to keep you comfortable during a lengthy session.

Broadcast and Podcast

The headphones allow for monitoring audio on a laptop or in a home studio as well as recording a vlog on a smartphone.

Swiveling and Rotating Earcups

If you're a DJ who likes to keep one ear free, you can swivel one of the earcups for on-the-shoulder monitoring. The earcups also rotate 90° so you can turn one of the earcup outward for one-ear handheld monitoring.

10' Cable

A headphone cable that's too short is almost like sitting on the sidelines—you can't be part of the action. If you need to move around while you work, the 10' cable will allow you to move about freely.

I want to record video unto a DSLR from a ...

I want to record video unto a DSLR from a RodeLink lav (3.5mm output through a Rode XLR converter), while recording ambient sound at the same time with its built-in microphones. Will the H5 do it, or do I need the H6? Which is the optimal recorder (low-noise, quality preamp) for this purpose?
Asked by: Laszlo
Yes, the H5 will do it... With the built-in X/Y microphones, they will be ganged together for stereo and record as one stereo file. The XLR inputs are not ganged and can be used for 2 independent inputs. All 4 channels are synced together when recording, and then you can use the line out into your camera to record audio with the video. If you want to record all 4 channels separately, the H5 uses an SD card, so you could skip the line out altogether and join the audio later in the processing.

This recorder is a great choice for capturing either the live performance in the room with the built-in mics, or for connecting the inputs on the bottom to a mixer or speaker output for a direct recording.

I see that you can record a line-in via the XY module (e.g. for lav mics), but can you record the XY at the same time as that line in? So, could I have a lav mic plugged into the line-in _and_ also record the XY audio to get ambient/location sound separately from the lav?

The line input will bypass the on-board microphones. You will not be able to record both simultaneously.

Can this be combined with the Zoom EXH-6 to give it a total of 4 XLR inputs?
Asked by: Matthias
"The EXH-6 from Zoom adds two additional XLR/TRS combo inputs to the Zoom H5 and H6 handheld recorders, or to the F4 field recorder. This makes the H5 capable of recording up to four external mic/line signals simultaneously, and the H6 or F4 up to six."
