Mixing a long zoom with apt imaging capabilities, the Leica V-Lux 5 is a versatile camera characterized by its ergonomic design and travel-friendly feature-set. Revolving around a large 20.1MP 1" CMOS sensor, high-resolution stills shooting and UHD 4K video recording is possible with a wide sensitivity range to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. The sensor and processing technologies also enable fast autofocus performance along with continuous full-resolution shooting at 12 fps and 4K Photo shooting at 30 fps.

Balancing the photo and video capabilities, the V-Lux 5 is also distinguished by its impressive DC Vario-Elmarit ASPH. zoom lens, which covers a wide-angle to super-telephoto 25-400mm equivalent focal length range. Also notable is the camera's ergonomic design, which resembles an SLR camera, and incorporates both a 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder and 3.0" 1.24m-dot articulating touchscreen LCD. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth allow you to wirelessly share imagery or remotely control the camera from a linked smartphone or tablet via the Leica FOTOS app.

20.1MP 1" CMOS Sensor

A large 20.1MP 1" CMOS sensor helps to realize rich image quality with reduced noise and high sensitivity range to suit photographing in a variety of conditions. The imaging and processing capabilities also avail impressively fast autofocus performance along with continuous shooting rates up to 12 fps or 30 fps at 8MP in the 4K Photo modes.

DC Vario-Elmarit ASPH. 16x Zoom Lens

An impressive 16x zoom DC Vario-Elmarit ASPH. lens offers a 25-400mm equivalent focal length range along with a maximum aperture range of f/2.8-4 to suit working in available light conditions. The lens construction incorporates a series of aspherical elements to minimize spherical aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range for greater sharpness and clarity.

4K Video and 4K Photo Modes

The sensor and processor combination also enables 4K video recording at 30p in the MP4 format at 100 Mb/s. These 4K capabilities also permit recording 8MP stills at 30 fps in a trio of ways:
  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 15 minutes, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.
  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.
  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.

Post Focus and Focus Stacking

Another attribute of the 4K capabilities is a unique focusing method called Post Focus. Working in conjunction with the contrast-detection focusing system, Post Focus records imagery as a 4K MP4 file at 30 fps and shifts the specific point of focus throughout the burst shooting in order to offer a range of distinct focusing ranges to choose from. During playback, via the camera's touchscreen, you can then tap the specific region of the image you wish to be in focus and an 8MP JPEG file will be created. Multiple individual files with different points of focus can be created from the original burst and focusing assist functions can also be used to gain even more precise control over the specific in-focus region.

This technology also allows for producing focus stacked images in-camera to realize a greater depth of field, especially when photographing close-up subjects. In this mode, images are recorded and saved with varying points of focus and then blended together to gain an extended depth of field.

Body Design and Wireless Connectivity

  • High-resolution 2.36m-dot, 0.74x-magnification electronic viewfinder is integrated into the body design to permit comfortable eye-level monitoring.
  • Alternatively, a rear 3.0" 1.24m-dot touchscreen LCD monitor is also available for live view shooting, image review, and intuitive menu navigation. The screen features an articulating design that flips out 180° to the side and then tilts 270° to permit working from high, low, and front-facing angles.
  • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides you with approximately 440 shots per charge and in-camera charging is supported via the micro-USB port.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, along with the Leica FOTOS app, allow you to wirelessly share photos and movies to linked smartphones and tablets for direct sharing online. This connectivity also allows you to remotely control the camera from a mobile device.

Leica V-LUX 5 Reviews

Excellent camera; this camera takes the place of all the cameras in my arsenal.

I purchased this camera to replace the loads of weight I was carrying around on my morning and evening walk's around my little town. I LOVE PHOTOGRAPHY, and require high quality images. This camera has by far exceeds my wildest expectations. This is an excellent bridge camera for any professional photographer. Some learning curve with navigation. Read the manual!. Highly recommended for the build and image quality.

Terrific plug and play image solution. Mine's made in Japan. Get a charger and extra batteries. I took better wedding pictures than the so-called pro. (Who was jealous.) Its a go anywhere do anything camera. Light weight. Keep the strap on so as not to drop it. Attach the string to the camera for the lens cap as that falls off way too easily. I should give five stars, for ease of use. My favorite feature in good lighting is the burst mode. If you burst mode all your shots, one of the images is bound to be excellent. Take as many images you can, and delete the crummy ones- which this camera does with aplomb. Even if its not weather/dust tight, you are unlikely to drag your camera through mud, right?

Great Camera! It's A Leica!

Great Camera! I made a leap and traded in all of my Fuji miirroless cameras and lenses to lighten my load of gear and just have fun with photography again. I also wanted a longer focal length to capture some bird images. I love macro photography and was hesitant to ditch my macro lens but did it anyway. So far I am very pleased with the images I am capturing.. I do notice some noise at the 400mm mark but the images were worth it. Having only had the camera a couple of weeks I expect to master more skill with it. The camera is light and easy to carry. Since it is a manual zoom I am trying to remind myself to always carry a cleaning cloth to wipe off dust/ pollen before retracting the zoom or turning the camera off. Images SOOC are pretty amazing!

Still learning; awesome camera

I have only scratched the surface. This is my second Leica camera so I love them and look forward to using this as a travel camera and as a bird camera in Florida. So far, so good!

I love this camera. My second vlux. Had the vlux 1 and upgraded passing the 1 along to my niece. Macro to zoom all in one camera. No lens swapping. As someone with an auto immune disease, my muscles lose strength and swapping lenses becomes snd issue as well as the extra weight to carry everything. This Leica does everything for the advanced amateur. Weight is balanced well. Relatively compact. Image quality is incredible. Shutter speed options are great! I’m what i consider an advanced amateur but not professional. I like to shoot what i see without manipulating images. This Leica takes photos true to life. I compared a few cameras, mostly the Sony mark IV which i rented. The Leica outperforms the Sony in every way.

Excellent travel camera.

I've been using Nikon cameras for over 50 years, but as I age, I needed a lighter weight camera for travel. This Leica V-LUX 5 is much lighter and includes a 25-400 lens. I can recommend it for anybody.

I am a hobbyist photographer, who also shoots a Nikon 6z. I wanted a bridge camera, a single lens camera, and somewhat lightweight, and chose this Leica after considering a Sony. The plastic case takes getting used to as others have mentioned, but I am very happy with the beautiful, clear pictures and the ease of use with the camera. I highly suggest checking it out if you are in the market for a bridge camera. I am confident I will love it for a long time to come. And, of course, one can NEVER go wrong with ordering from B&H. Their service is truly outstanding, website transparent, easily used and no frills, and everything is always delivered as indicated. Thank you B&H you are the best, and you get all my business.

There are no claims by the manufacturer as to its sealing. A little dust will be no problem. If a dust storm is coming, that means put it in a sealed bag.

The Leica little red dot is the main difference. An expensive red dot. I use the LUMIX version, and since I shoot in RAW only, Leicas firmware for jpeg processing is irrelevant for my purposes.
