Pairing the sleek rangefinder-inspired camera with an intermediate prime between wide-angle and normal-length, the FUJIFILM GFX 50R Medium Format Mirrorless Camera with 50mm Lens Kit from B&H bundles the medium format body with the 40mm-equivalent GF 50mm f/3.5 R LM WR lens.

FUJIFILM GFX 50R Medium Format Mirrorless Camera

Distinguished by its svelte, rangefinder-inspired design, the FUJIFILM GFX 50R is a sleek medium format mirrorless camera that is notably portable and highly capable. Revolving around a 43.8 x 32.9mm 51.4MP CMOS sensor, which is paired with the X-Processor Pro image processor, the GFX 50R is capable of producing high-resolution still imagery with an extremely wide dynamic range, a broad sensitivity range up to an extended ISO 102400, and the sensor's large size contributes to a unique three-dimensional look with especially smooth tonal and color transitions. The sensor and processor also enable recording Full HD 1080p30 video.

Benefitting the imaging capabilities is a comfortable physical design, which incorporates a 3.69m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder for bright, clear eye-level viewing. Alternatively, the rear 3.2" 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD features a three-way tilting design that supports working from high and low angles, even when shooting in the vertical orientation. Additionally, the GFX 50R has a durable magnesium-alloy build that is also dust- and weather-sealed, as well as freezeproof down to 14°F, for working in trying environmental conditions.

51.4MP CMOS Sensor and X-Processor Pro

Utilizing a large, 43.8 x 32.9mm 51.4MP CMOS sensor and X-Processor Pro, the GFX 50R is capable of delivering high-resolution, 14-bit stills with a 14-stop wide dynamic range as well as a broad sensitivity range of ISO 100-12800, which can be extended to ISO 50-102400. The large size of each pixel allows for more efficient light gathering, too, for smoother tonal and color transitions to produce a characteristic three-dimensional "medium format look." Also contributing to several medium format looks, a variety of traditional medium and large format aspect ratios can be used in addition to the standard 4:3, including 1:1, 65:24, 5:4, 7:6, 3:2, and 16:9.

The image processor and sensor also lend a versatile edge to the system, and permit shooting continuously up to 3 fps or for recording Full HD 1080p video at 29.97, 25, 24, and 23.98 fps frame rates. Film Simulation modes, including a Color Chrome Effect to produce subtle tonality among highly saturated colors, can be used in conjunction with video recording, too, to lessen the need for color correction during post production.

Body Design

  • Rangefinder-inspired design is compact and lightweight, and by placing the viewfinder in the upper corner of the body design, it is possible to keep one eye on the viewfinder while surveying the scene with the other.
  • Magnesium-alloy body construction is both lightweight and durable, and the camera system is sealed in 64 places to render it weather- and dust-resistant, as well as freezeproof down to 14°F, for use in inclement conditions.
  • Built-in 3.69m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder offers high-resolution, 0.77x-magnification eye-level viewing.
  • A 3.2" 2.36m-dot touchscreen LCD is also available for image playback, menu navigation, and live view shooting. This LCD features a unique tilting design that moves both 45° downward and 90° upward for shooting from high and low angles, and also tilts 60° to the side to benefit shooting in the vertical orientation when in live view.
  • A series of dedicated dials are placed about the body for independently adjusting aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
  • Included NP-T125 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 400 shots per charge when Auto Power Save is on.
  • Built-in Bluetooth low energy allows for direct wireless sharing of files as well as remote camera control from a linked mobile device.

117-Point Autofocus System

A contrast-detection autofocus system is employed that uses 117 total points, which can be further divided into 425 points, for notable focusing speed and accuracy that is especially beneficial when working with the inherent shallow depth of field of medium format. Focus point selection is possible using the integrated Focus Lever for intuitive switching between points and, alternatively, the rear touchscreen can also be used for selecting precise focus areas. Face and Eye Detection AF are also available to benefit portraiture, and an electronic depth of field scale can be used for more critical selective focus. Additionally, focus peaking is available in manual focus mode as well as frame magnification for more critical focusing.

Other Camera Features

  • The FUJIFILM G lens mount features a short focal flange distance of just 26.7mm to better facilitate adapting lenses and to allow for reduced back focusing distances to better prevent vignetting and promote edge-to-edge sharpness with the GF series of lenses.
  • Film Simulation modes allow you to reproduce the look and feel of several of FUJIFILM's film types, including Provia, Velvia, Astia, Eterna, Classic Chrome, Classic Neg., Pro Neg. Hi, Pro Neg. Standard, Acros, Monochrome, and Sepia. Additionally, Grain Effect can be adjusted as well as Classic Chrome effect to fine-tune the look of imagery.
  • Smooth Skin Effect helps to disguise blemishes and produce an overall smooth appearance to suit portraiture applications.
  • Dual UHS-II SD memory card slots are featured, and permit saving imagery in a sequential manner, backup/duplicate manner, or in a sorted manner to segregate JPEG and raw files.
  • Mechanical focal plane permits working with shutter speeds from 60 minutes up to 1/4000 sec, and an electronic shutter allows the use of shutter speeds up to 1/16000 sec for working in bright light conditions.
  • Interval shooting is possible for up to 999 consecutive frames with a 1 sec to 24 hour delay between exposures, as well as up to a 24 hours shutter delay.
  • Multiple Exposure mode lets you shoot two consecutive overlaid frames, and the first frame will be shown on the rear LCD to aid in alignment for the second exposure.
  • A variety of file formats are available depending on your workflow needs, and include uncompressed and compressed raw file types; Super Fine, Fine, and Normal JPEG settings; and TIFF files can be output via in-camera raw file development.
  • A voice memo function lets you solely record your voice for up to 30 seconds at a time for making notes or keeping track of shooting information.
  • 3D Electronic Level can be used to ensure the accuracy of horizontal and vertical lines within your composition.
  • Tethered shooting is possible using Capture One Pro for FUJIFILM software to send images from the camera to your computer for further editing. Alternatively, the Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and HS-V5 for Windows operating systems are also available.

GFXR Medium Format Incredible. Perfect, Best Value & Image

Been using and testing the GFXR now for over a week. Also own the GFX50s.  Ive been waiting 10 years for a great value compact Digital MF camera. Image output is of course stellar. I own all 7 current lenses, id avoid getting the 63mm, its rather blahh. Get the 45mm and depending on what you do for sure the 23mm, 32-64, and the 110mm f2 portrait is incredible!   Amazing camera the GFXR with NOTHING to complain about, and I LOVE to complain!  Its made in Japan by the way, and despite images of the camera, its actually very lightweight.  You should get the Fuji GB-001 handstrap for it, which was made for the XT1 but fits perfect on the GFXR!   My GFXR and my Godox 685 with XPro trigger, and a couple lenses is my many years wait DREAM PACKAGE camera kit (as the English love to say).  A++ camera

Best affordable medium format

On my opinion this device is perfect for people, who want to begin using medium format. If you know what this camera is made for you can’t find any weak points of it. The sensor is a bit old, but better to say trusted by many professionals. There are lot good things to say about this camera, but it can be easily googled. So I’m still testing it and I enjoy the process. If you are not sure about this purchase, it’s better to have some time and to learn more about it. This camera is not for beginners but it’s perfect for enthusiasts and professionals. If you buy it cosciously you wouldn’t regret a moment. It’s is worthy any penny you spent on it. Also good to mention that GFX system is good to invest your money in, specially lenses, I think this system has a good future.

Love It!

Great camera for landscapes! Easy to use, less weight than a D850. Glass is great. Excellent low light performance on a tripod. The files are GORGEOUS!!! Carried this and the 23mm around Death Valley for a week with no problem (age 66). So glad to be using medium format again. Very Highly Recommended!

Great camera -- and beware if you wear eyeglasses.

GFX 50R with 45mm lens is a great camera.  Lighter than it looks and great controls/looks/operation unless you wear eye glasses and cant get close enough to viewfinder to see entire frame at once.  Diopter cant correct enough for old eyes.  Beautiful work by Fuji.  Wonderful service by B&H and forced to return because I cant see entire EVF and working off of LCD not what I need.

Great camera with remarkable image quality. Just carried it around Death Valley for a week with the 23mm and 32-64 zoom. No problem! (and Im 66). Is it perfect? No. Is any camera perfect? No. Do I wish it had the same type of LCD as the X-T3? Yes. And the battery life is very good. Would I buy it again? Yes! Do I recommend it to landscape photographers? Absolutely, yes!

Image quality game changer

I’ve been shooting with this now for a solid few weeks and have run a couple thousand frames through it, mostly of landscapes/nature but also some urban/street. As the headline implies, the image quality of the RAW files is nothing short of amazing, between the dynamic range, the detail, and the colors: it lived up to the hype and high expectations. From a handling perspective, it’s slightly lighter weight than my full frame DSLR and the lenses balance well with it (I have the 63, the 32 - 64, and the 23). I also very much like the controls and quickly got used to them. I expected the autofocus to struggle a bit but honestly it really hasn’t: yes it’s a little bit slower than my DSLR but not meaningfully enough to be significant, particularly for the kind of work I do. The only downside is shooting handheld in fairly low light: the glass isn’t terribly fast, and without OIS you need to make up for it in ISO, which in certain situations will have me reaching for my DSLR instead. But that’s ok: I didn’t expect it to replace everything in my kit. For the areas where it DOES work best—and there are many—it’s a noticeable step up from my full frame camera and I’m very glad I made the investment. Highly, highly recommend to anyone considering taking the plunge. It’s not a small investment, but you won’t regret it.

If you an X-Pro, this is your next step

For a few years, I have been using an X-Pro 1, then X-Pro2.  Decided that my dream for the past 30 years to have a medium format camera was due.  The GFX 50R is a very smooth transition from the XPro, and that is why I decided to stay on the Fuji train.  Instantly like the feel and size of the camera. Controls are as intuitive and functional of the XPro series.  I miss the ability to turn off the LCD display in the view finder and look straight through like in the XPro series, but I think this camera is about slowing down a little, composing the photograph and then shooting.  Image quality is excellent.  Integration with LightRoom and Photoshop is all there.  Still working on tethering and a few other options that are not available in the XPro series (like focus bracketing).  First series of informal portraits were excellent.  Can not wait to get out in the field and shoot some landscape & architectural shots. Dont have a lot of criticism at this point because I have not found the limits on this camera.

This is an upgrade from my Nikon D810, which I traded. I was doubtfull whether to buy the D850 or this camera and when the kit rebate came out, I made the plunge to get this outstanding kit. I am also a Fufijilm shooter (XT-2 and XE-2) so it was very familiar to handle the GFX 50 R for the first time. The camera looks great, it is very compact for this size and the 45 mm f2.8 ir rock solid. I plan to use this beast with my four Nikon Tilt/Shift lenses and also with this 45 mm f2.8 lens for panoramas. Here, I am uploading 2 pictures: one is a 224 stitched panorama in 360 miniplanet of the Embassy of Argentina in Washington DC, taken with the Fujinon 45 mm f2.8 and the other is of my office, with my Nikon 19 mm f4 tilt/shift at f8 with  the Fotodiox Adapter and 4 degree of shift upwards, with zero vignetting (2 Nikon Speedlights were used). Both show awesome detail.  Hope, it can shown an idea for potential customers.
